Thanks for all your advice on the 1fz-fe I bought a 1993 great example with 260,000kms a few months ago. Power steering leaks so I need to fix that, I carried out an experiment and found better economy and smoother running much less pinging on 95 octane. Standard fuel quality is rubbish is aus so figured bring the standard closer to what they have in Japan is a good move. One other issue I have is the low oil light coming on and off dispite full. I think I need a new sensor. Keep up the good work mate.
I currently own a 5/94 80 series with the 1FZ-FE coupled with the A442F,and what a great match.I also noticed your 80 is the same colour as mine.My old girl has 331,xxxkms on her and I’ve had the head gasket done in October last year which included a top end rebuild while it was all apart. This one is in very good condition with very minor clear coat peel, but the future plan is to give her a fresh coat of paint. This is my second 80 series,my first one I bought was the updated 95 model with the same engine/trans combination, and Champagne in colour..It only had 152,xxxkms when I bought it.Absolutely love the 80 series.
You mentioned the pressure sending unit, I’m assuming your talking about the oil pressure sending unit. When I removed the thermostat housing, I noticed how easy it was suddenly to get to the oil sending unit. Food for thought.
I couldn't agree more with you on how powerful this engine is … I have 100 series with 1FZ-FE engine. My question for you HOW OFTEN YOU CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL
As i use an oil stabiliser when i change my oil, i try to do every 10,000KMs. I also use 20W-50 grade oil on the car due to the high KMs it now hows on it, and swear by Morrie's Oil Stabiliser
That engine sounds noises and rough. I have an 80 with that engine and it’s super quiet. Listening to this makes me feel good. He says it’s good sounding, not sure what he’s comparing it with ??
Thanks for the info, bloody terrific. I can't get over your fuel economy! My mechanic said my 30 - 33 litres /100kms is as good as I can expect, and this is usual. I bought it at 240k and I'm now at 450k. In the first few months I was getting around 40l/100km. It seemed over night it dropped down. Strange! Now I'm told I need a head gasket replaced. Bugga! With an engine of this age and terrible fuel economy would you offer any advise?
TBH, first off find another mechanic because sounds like someone is BS'ing you. 40L/100k seems like the engine is really running rich, big time. To give you and updated fuel economy, as of 2021, I am now sitting on a combined average (city/hwy) of around 19L/100K
Thanks for another opinion. I thought I was only one expecting a better fuel economy. I've has 2 mechanics who over the last 18 years assure me they have done all that can be done to improve it. I've reached 450,000kms, needs head gasket and who knows, maybe head shaved, steering noisy when at full lock. Can't decide, new or recon engine, trade in for a later model? I guess I need an honest and very experienced 4x4 mechanic! Do you know of anyone fitting this description in the Frankston area? Thanks in advance.
@@chuckedone there is used to be a 4x4 mechanic on frankston-dandy rd but not sure if they are still there. Stick around the channel for weekends at Backyard Tech. Got some 80 series coming up
Gday mate I have just subscribed to your channel You seem to be quite knowledgeable on the legendary 80 I have a 96 petrol 80 with the 1Fz-fe and my question is about my rear windscreen whipper that has just stopped working and I cannot find the fuse on the car or in my manual And how do I message you with questions. Not good with computers cheers
I say get a free flowing exhaust and a K&N air filter. I get a out 12 mpg on a good day. That's the best you are going to get unless u are rolling down hill lol. You need to change the fuel filter tho. It helps a lot.
Hello sir, I got an issue that I haven't been able to identify for a while now, I hope you could help me out with that. It's a 1997 1fz-fe, part-time 4wd with a manual. I am getting an immense amounts of heat building up from the transmission. At the same time when I accelerate, revs go up, then drop back 300-700rpm, while this is happening, I'm not getting much acceleration. This even happens on the move, when I'm trying to overtake or just trying to get a speed up like 20 kph. The motor seems to run ok, I have a suspicion, that it could be a clutch issue, when a clutch plate keeps slipping (temp builds up from it losing traction). Maybe you could point out what else could it be, before I go and take out the tranny? Also what would be the best oil to use if a car has 450000km with a partial engine rebuild about 20000km ago? We have temperatures of -15 to +40 here Thank you for a great video!
@ Arcl1t Sounds very much like a clutch issue in a big way. And or clutch and trust-bearing as well, so I would get both checked out. As far as oil is concerned, I am running Shell Helix 20W-40 on my motor with Morey's Oil Stabiliser as well ( A full bottle of Morey's then 6.2 litres of oil). I would very much check the clutch and trust-bearing first before you look at the box.
Hmmm, if you want to see a gasket in every mating surface, a 1FZ-FE is not the motor for you. There's a tube and half of FIPG in every one. FIPG= Formed In Place Gasket.
I agree one of the best Toyota engines ever built
Also one of the thirstiest out there
The 1FZ-FE is basically a farm tractor motor in a truck.

Ye mate, just had to replace both power steering hoses, was a pain in the arse but ye, same issue, mines at 245xxx
I have this engine on my Landcruiser j71 shorty. it is out this world. unbelievably fun to drive.
And front half moons , "what you call cam seal" are from factory siliconed. No gasket
manual calls for Toyota FIPG Black. no gasket is made for the cam half moons.

@Gary Davis this video I hope will shed more light on your issue th-cam.com/video/xJD4C772DCg/w-d-xo.html
How many KMs would one typically get out of a 1FZ-FE before considering an engine rebuild? Think it's worth buying one with 360Kms on the clock?

Hello I’m a new listener of yours, love your vids, I have a 1993 fzj80 1fzfe engine. How do you clean the steering pump resovoir filter?
I'm having heating problems with mine, any advice
Could be thermostat is locked open. Or maybe a pressure issue.
Ive got a 105 1fzfe, shes had a good life, only 245xxx on it, shes a goer, only bad thing is it loves a drink of petrol
pops in the exhaust = valve adjustment out or vacuum leak
belts are easy and no need to remove fan and or shroud

Mixture control - continuously rich
@@OldMatesBackyardTech what i have to chang i just order o2 sensor for my 93 lc thankyou
Need to get the mixture looked at. It's running rich
Is there any way to get more low end torque without putting a turbo or supercharger?
Depends on which transmission you are running. Also you may able to get it tuned bit on the whole, no not really,
A properly runnig/ idling toyota gasoline engine has just the injector sound: I am telling from my experience on 4afe, 5vzfe and 2uzfe engines.
you should here them on the 22re holy god they are loud
Did he just say V6?
I have a 1997 full time 4wd 1fz-fe and it’s costing me heaps is there anything I can do to make it more efficient

There's no sill only silicone
guys he knows that his intake manifold gaskets don't leak because he doesn't have any oil on the top of the motor... 🤦♂️

Valve bouncing is old school. Most electronic fuel injection cars use a rev limiter which retards timing . Not actual valve bouncing
