I bought one a few days ago and I live in a rural location. I get fringe coverage on EE 4G (1-2 bars max') but still get ~25 down, ~8 up. My BT landline is ~1.2 down, ~0.4 up. Happy with my deal, 30Gb/month for £21.60 inc. VAT.
Hi, would this product work to sustain Sky TV at "home"? I am moving temporarily and do not wish to take out a fixed 18/24 month broadband contract but I require taking my Sky TV package with me... sorry in advance if a similar question has been asked previously. Also, how much data would Sky use up for general tv watching (evenings/weekends only?) (to decide on which data plan/month)
I am sorry Ajay, I have no idea how much data Sky TV uses. I had a quick look online, but never found any information. There may be an answer out there if you spend some time digging around. There are deals for unlimited data that are not too expensive, try 3 mobile and look at HomeFi £49 upfront cost, £31 a month unlimited data, 1 month contract. I have the 12 month contract. Good luck with your search! :-)
Thank you for this mate , I am moving into a static caravan for a few months and with no land line options were limited. I was worried about the speed but you showed it will be fine.
Glad to help Mike. Before you decide, look at home fi by 3 ( mobile provider). They have a package that has 100GB for £29 a month and that includes "go binge' which means you can use some apps, such as Netflix without using any of your available bandwidth. I have both now, but have not had chance to try out home fi yet. It needs a wall power socket as it is not battery operated so is not portable like the EE router.
Hi, I am a liveaboard looking for an answer to my Wifi woes. How does it perform inside your boat? In my experience these portable devices usually can't get a signal inside the boat.
Hi Darren, the router works fine inside my narrow boat, however I often have to move it around the lounge area to get a decent signal. I always place it in a window on a long 2m charging lead connected to a USB charger. It will hang off the lead without any other support as the connection is firm enough to stop the router slipping off the type C connection. I hang it over my curtain rails or rest it on the aluminium frames of the windows using the window latches to wrap the cable around. So far I have always been able to get connected, although I have not traveled very far with it. I also use it on trips in the car. I do not think you will have many problems with it.
Hey Russell. I am moving onto a narrowboat in the next month. Does this work for video calling (Sky etc)? I need to do lots of Skyping from the boat as part of my work. Thanks for the informative vid.
Hi Dan, Skype will be fine with this router. You should also check out 3 Mobile Home-Fi. This comes with Go Binge which means that certain apps like Netflix do not use up your monthly allowance. I got a deal 100GB a month for £3O. It is not listed at the moment and they are only offering 40GB, but look around you may be cable to find something. Whatever you decide, you MUST check all of your devices to ensure auto update is off. I used half of my allowance one evening on my boat because my Xbox was automatically updating a game! I hope this helps. By the way Home-Fi requires a 240v socket for the router, that is why it is not Mi-Fi. :-)
I've got the exact same one but I've noticed the newer ones don't have a usb port for charging anything. Very pleased with mine and yes mine is faster than our BT home router and we live across the road from the BT exchange, saying all of that BT own EE. Great product I'd be lost without it, I use it when visiting my Mum who is in her 80's and has no internet.
+Alex A Hello Alex, you should look at this device as a router the same way you would at the router connected to your broadband line home. The broadband signal is delivered via the mobile network instead of the telephone line. I have a pay monthly contract that gives me 32gb a month for £28. I tend not to use the allowance, but wanted a large allowance so that I did not have to worry too much about surfing on my boat. The router has a security password the same as your home one does and you can connect up to 10 devices to it at once. I hope this helps.
Russell Platten Thanks for the reply. That's a bit clearer now, a VPN should only really be needed when connecting to public WIFI such as in hotels, cafes etc. With EE 4G encryption no hackers would get into that. Thanks.
Your a handy guy to kinda know Russell, I bought a motorhome a few months ago and I’ve been thinking about what to do for internet and now I know. I have seen these boxes advertised but was never really sure but as soon as I’ve finished this I’m ordering one. Thanks again bro, Oh and the hw100s is mint.
I use it on my boat and have the 240v power supply for the inverter that comes with the router and I bought a 12v cigarette to 5.5mm male power supply to use it with the inverter switched off.
Hello, what charger did you use to charge up the device? Do you use fast charger or a normal 1A ones since this mifi support qualcomm quick charge 2.0. Hope you will answer my question. Thanks
I use an intelligent multi charger Mizu with a maximum output of 2.4A. I use this type of charger for all of my electronic equipment if it is charged via USB.
Hi! I have a question, do these light indicators on the top, for 4G 3G and signal strength, do they turn off after a short while on your device too? I'm so confused if it is working or not, I assumed they will be turned on all the time and they just turn off. how is it for you?
It will only connect via WiFi, so your TV must have WiFi capability in order for it to work. Have a look at 3 Mobile Home Fi if you need an internet connection for home. The EE set up is more suited for outdoors although it will work well inside too. :-)
Does anyone know if this will this work with a plusnet simcard? (As it is an MNVO that uses the EE network and they are both owned by BT) Thanks in advance
Excellent video.Straight to the points, full details and well delivered.I have been thinking about one of these and your video is a good plug for EE. I'm not a high user of data, so whats the best? Would it be PAYG or contract?
The yellow USB to USB type C cable. You need a USB charger or computer with a USB port. I bought a 3m cable and leave it on charge permanently when I use it. :-)
Hello Russell. Great review thanks. I'm thinking of buying one. Would my xbox360 pick up the signal so I could watch Netflix/BBCiplayer? I live in London so the signal strength is excellent. Also I wanted to do the 32gb monthly for £28. Do I need to buy this through EE? I'm picking up the mini device from Curry's. Thanks.
+mark hosker Hello Mark. Thank you for your comment. I use the EE router with my Xbox One with no problems. It will be fine with your games console :-)
+mark hosker I have the same plan. I got the router From EE with the sim. I would give them a call and see what they say before getting the device from Curry's.
I had EE but switched to another because of the land line someone else had the connection in a shared accommodation .so couldn't use my laptop.and broadband and been using mobile . this looks like I can use the laptop with this
I use this whilst travelling and during power cuts, we live in the countryside and get regular power cuts. It would work with your laptop if you had enough data allowance. I also use 3 mobile Mi-Fi unlimited broadband on my boat. www.three.co.uk/discover/devices/huawei/4g-plus-mifi?memory=0&colour=Black You can have unlimited 4G broadband for £23 a month and the speeds are reasonable. I use it at home too as our broadband package is slow here. :-)
Not sure which sim you would need Tom. I opted for the 32gb monthly sim for £28. I have used it for my Xbox and it does not appear to use lots of bandwidth, but I have not really been playing online games, just whilst connected online.

Hi, I'm Thinking About Buying One Of These Devices To Connect To My Tv, If It's Just One Device Connected How Long Will The Data Last? Also The Pay As You Go Too Up, How Much Do You Top Up For It To Last You?
I cannot answer the question regarding how long the data will last as it depends how much you are using. If you are streaming video on netflix the following link will give you an idea of how much you will use. help.netflix.com/en/node/87 As far as top up is concerned, check the EE website for charges. Needless to say, using the device to stream video will use a lot of data. I avoid this with my device when I use it on my boat, we use it for normal stuff and only stream the odd video.
Have you tested the signal quality of this, when it's placed inside the closed glove box of your car? I'm thinking of buying one and sticking it inside my glove box, in order to have internet in my car. If the signal quality is still strong, even while placed inside the glove box, I'll get one today. If you could test this and let me know, I'd be very grateful! Thank you
I have just been out to the car and tried the router in the glove compartment. It worked. I live in the sticks and do not get a good mobile signal at the best of times. I was showing one LED for signal strength on 4G outside the car and before I closed the glove compartment. I placed the router in the compartment then closed car door and the glove compartment door to test the reception. I opened up several web pages and it all seemed fine. I hope this helps.
+Vinny Vin Hi Vinny, I just had a look and I reckon the 4GEE has about half the range of my BT Home Hub 5. This is not bad and would probably be fine in a small house. The one thing about this device though, is that you can carry it to any room in your house. If there is a problem with reception you can just move it, so long as you can get a mobile signal. I love this product. We had a power cut for 6 hours the other day and we were all happily surfing on our tablets throughout, brilliant!

I bought one of these for temporary tenants living in my flat, was really disappointed. Area (Brighton) has good coverage but this was in and out the whole time and v unreliable.
Hi, on my boat, I hang the unit in a window with a suction hook and elastic band after checking which position gives the best reception. I also purchased a long type c lead and have it plugged in permanently. The weather also affects the signal, but there is nothing you can do about that unfortunately.

Russell Platten ok thanks for the reply mate! I play online multiplayer on my PS4 a lot so do u think 50gb of data per month is enough ?
I think you will be fine Lewis, but I cannot be sure. 50gb is a lot, I have a 32gb contract, but we only use it on our boat. We are only on there a few days a month and I end up with most of my allowance left at the end of each month. If you do decide to go for it, you MUST disable automatic updates as these can mop up your allowance in no time. If you do go ahead, please let me know how you get on. Sorry I cannot be of more use to you.
Russell Platten thanks for reply mate you've been really helpful! I wish they done a unlimited data plan
Me too!!!
"It would be fairly bulky to fit in your pocket, but it's small enough to fit in your pocket so you can carry it around in your pocket"
Yup, clear as mud to me.
Fits in trouser pocket, but is still bulky. Rather like a large wallet.
HOW TO RESET WIFI PASSWORD IF FORGOTTEN?
The password should be on a sticker on the back of the unit.
Great review.
Cheers. :-)
This device is very good
I use it almost 5 months
But just one thing
Internet speed so slow
I am planning to buy it, plz tell me if I could watch youtube and netflix on my smart TV or chromecast by connecting with this EE mobile broadband?
*Accidentally disabled one of router settings
now i can't login to 192.168.1.1 and change the setting
I would try resetting the router, you need a reset pin and the hole is next to the sim card slot. Look at your quick start guide.
Wow..small but power

Ned Stark, is that you?
+Rizzy I get a few Sean Bean comments Rizzy! My wife thinks that I sound nothing like him and wishes that I looked like him too ;-)
I bought one of these for temporary tenants living in my flat, was really disappointed. Area (Brighton) has good coverage but this was in and out the whole time and v unreliable.
Hi, on my boat, I hang the unit in a window with a suction hook and elastic band after checking which position gives the best reception. I also purchased a long type c lead and have it plugged in permanently. The weather also affects the signal, but there is nothing you can do about that unfortunately.
thiccc
thats silly as bt own ee
My BT connection is via the phone line and the EE connection is 4G mobile. :-)
Would this be better then three’s homefi? Primary using it for my Xbox one
