Thank you for putting together this video. I am a 59 year old retired gent who graduated from UCSB way back when in 1982. So many things about this university have stayed the same and so many things have changed radically. It was much easier to enter UCSB back in the late 70's. A 3.1 gpa and 1100 on the SAT guaranteed entry to a UC school. I lived in Francisco Torres off campus dorm freshman year and then in apartments in IV the next three years. This is an interesting survey of one person’s experience. Over 20,000 kids, there will be groups. The partiers won’t be scholars or athletes. If you want to be successful in life here’s my advice: 1. Don’t get into a serious relationship unless you want to get married. Have clear goals ahead of time. You’re there to learn academically and professionally, not to learn how to kiss. Don’t get STDs. Don’t get used and don’t be a user. 2. Network and form relationships for life, which means be mature and find mature people. 3. Make sure to get to nature at least once per week- go to beach and hike. 4. Pick a major that will make you marketable. Even philosophy can be marketable if you learn to write well and read a ton. Just make sure to read up on business. 5. Keep your debt as low as possible. Even if it means doing 2yrs of community college and transferring in. Don’t arrive with a shiny new car. Save those funds. Strive to get some sort of passive income as early as you can in life. If you can save $50,000-150,000k on school perhaps invest in a real estate fixer that you can rent out for income or live in yourself.

Regarding UCSB Romance, 2 of my 4 roommates married their UCSB Girlfriends so take that with a grain of salt. According to Dr.Dru college relationships are at an inherent disadvantage due to so many options, youth & hormones, and people from different locations but I know A LOT of couple who ended up happily married to this day.
Yo I got accepted Tuesday and I’m hella hyped! I’m hoping to visit the campus soon. Any recommendations as to what particular areas I should check out? Thanks and have a good day!
CONGRATS! And yeah! Check out South Campus (by Bren Hall and the Marine Science building) and also check out the beach that is in front of the UCen! :)
I was like "Yeah, alright everything checks ou-"and then you talked about the romance aspect of UCSB. Like damn I didn't know it was that harsh. I'm considering a smaller college, just because they usually seem able to provide a more intimate and personal college experience. There's this small liberal arts college in Virginia, William and Mary, and I've heard that 25 percent of students there end up marrying another WM student. But overall UCSB sounds like a great school, love the location, chill but not romantically commiting people, question mark, and really great academics.
dude my best bro worked hard and played hard. he partied a shit ton in his fresh to soph years, then not as much in his jr and sr years. dude was a party animal, but did very well academically(3.65 GPA)
i’m thinking of going to ucsb as an exchange student. i already started college in my country, but is there a possibility to go to ucsb for an exchange year?
I’m really considering UCSB as a school. It seems like it’s just as easy to avoid as finding. How easy is it to take the classes you want? I’m worried it’s really competitive. Who/where would you recommend as the first stop to get kickstarted in extracurriculars? I’m just really curious and haven’t been able to find many people who have recent experiences. I know you posted this a year ago but I just stumbled upon it. Edit: also wondering about safety as a girl out there alone Edit: (again I’m sorry) When you say afraid of commitment, does that exclude friends? I’m not a social person and I’m really scared to not find any friends there
I think it depends on the class! For example, if youre a bio major, you have to take chem and there are multiple classes at different times to fit your schedule, so there shouldnt be any worry to getting those classes. Electives are a little more tricky though; some are more desired than others (i.e. Theater 5, Intro to Acting) and even if you dont get in initially, you can crash the class and theres a good chance if you show up to each class they will see that you're serious about being in the class and give you a spot. Extracurriculars wise, there are club fairs at the beginning of each quarter that you can go to and see the booths that club's set up and ask them questions if you have them! Also checking the rec cen's class listings is a great way to get involved in some cool activities. Also check out the UCSB reddit; a lot of clubs will post to it and promote their events! In my 4 years there, I never had a problem with safety, personally. The campus is well lit and there is an ample amount of security (UCPD, SBPD, IVPD, Campus Police) that seem to always be wandering about. I've walked home from the library countless times ~ 3 AM and been fine. When I say afraid of commitment I meant in romantic relationships! There is a good fraction of UCSB hat is introverted, and there are definitely groups and clubs where you can feel comfortable and also make friends with people who have similar interests to you :)
UCSB for sure!! I live in the Berkeley area and honestly it seems depressing af there. My friend transferred from Berkely to UCLA because she hated it so much. It’s just so competitive and noooooooo fun
I am debating whether to go here or not, but I really love state street. Are there cafés nearby? I really want to paint and stuff around there. Anyways, I'm glad you touched upon these points, it made me want to go there more. I am an introvert, but because of that, I am leaning towards UCSB (instead of Irvine) because I am the type of introvert that needs to have an extrovert around to have fun socially. I mean, I'm good by myself but I just want a friend or two lol. As for romance, I really don't want to date while I'm in college so I'm happy to hear that nobody does that. I am very scared of romance, commitment, anything like that. I just want friends lol
Sounds cool, i went to CSUSM near san diego, had a buddy who went to deltopia and came back with a pretty hilarious and disturbing story of how he earned his red wings. And dang that's a bummer about your place falling into the ocean haha.
hii I'm transferring to ucsb and transfer students can't live at the residence hall on campus. So i was wondering if you know anything about ucsb owned apartments. Are those apartments considered as anti-social and dry??
I don't know much about the apartments, as I'm about to start my first year, but what I've heard is that even if you live in a less social area, you can still find a lot going on as long as you don't have the mindset that the fun and social activities will come to you. I think as long as you are willing to put in a little effort to go out to see people around you, you will be fine!
Im transferring to UCSB in the fall this year for pre-Comm (i know COVID will probably affect in-person classes) but im going to be commuting from the Oxnard area... i want to buy an annual parking permit because i obvi need to drive... any advice for parking?
Not a lie told here. I went to UCSB 90-94. This was pretty much the exact truth. I can't speak for frats declining but it was true then that life at ucsb didn't revolve around frats. In terms of parties, Frat parties were not remotely even the best parties to go to. But academically it was not easy and engineering and physics were some of the best in the world. That's why Ratheon was there. But yeah spot on. Oh and when i was there Halloween was great. That said, Halloween sucks now partly cause of how much chaos we created in 1990, 91, 92. After that they brought the cops in mega force. But yeah, if you sit in your room it's your fault. There's plenty of different types of people. A great place to grow. "UCSB was the best time of my life so far. I miss it everyday." 1000% truth from nearly everyone that goes there.
Is UCSB a good school to attend if I’m interested in business? I’m hearing that it’s very limited when it comes to business. I was admitted a few days ago and since I got rejected from USC/UCLA it’s the school I’m leaning towards at the moment
UCSB doesn't have a business program, but they do have an Economics/Finance major that can be supplemented with the TMP certificate program which covers entrepreneurial and business practices + leadership experience! Its only 18 units so is easy to add to your schedule if you're good at time management. You can also talk tot he academic advisers and gear your major courses towards a more business-like path.
Your video was very helpful, I’m 17 and I really wanna go to ucsb but I live in Italy and I did all my school here, do you think it is possibke for me to go to ucsb? The thing is that the high school sistem is very different, we don’t have ap classes or clubs for example. I would really like to know if I have any possibilities, I was born in San Diego but moved to Italy since I was basically a baby
Hi! I actually have a friend who is a senior there right now who grew up in Italy and has been attending UCSB for the past 4 years :) I would definitely say apply and write on your personal statement about your time in Italy. We love international students :)
Hi Kelsey! Thank you for making this video, it’s so so helpful!! I’m wondering how the social science majors are at UCSB? Particularly psychology - is good or more of an afterthought at the school? Thank you!!
Florence H The psych program at UCSB is one of our most popular majors and we offer a BUNCH of research opportunities for psych students (undergrads and grads). We even have a research building 100% dedicated to psych that has no windows so research tests that are done inside it can be completely free of any outside factors (since weather can affect people’s moods, emotions, etc.). I always thought that was super cool!
Im deciding between UCD and UCSB. I am a bio major wanting to go into grad school to become a vet. I love the location of UCSB bt UCD does prioritize their alumni to their vet school. :( any advice would help
I know a lot of people who went to UCD due to their zoology/vet programs and love it! I also know a lot of people who went to UCSB for their undergrad and were in the zoology or marine biology program and loved it as well, then transferred for their grad to places that had Vet program. If you're a hard worker and focus on research throughout your undergrad at UCSB, you shouldn't have a problem when matching up against the UCD undergrads. One of the biggest "fables" I've heard since working around admissions is that the university prioritizes their undergrads, which isn't true! Each individual applicant is based off of their grades, research, app, etc. and not what school they went to, so don't stress :")
what's your major/ interests? intended career? if you're more arts driven i'd definitely pick LA over SB as their art program is miles ahead of ours (speaking as a current art major btw). of course, since both are broadly defined as "research universities" there's a high chance that you're going to have to encounter a lot of theory based classes rather than hands on practice, but busy work is unavoidable in nearly every major unless you have upper division standing/ prior instructor approval. as for the surrounding culture, honestly, i feel like SB is a bit insular, and gets kind of old after the first month, but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't biased because i'm currently trying to transfer to UCLA. this is just my personal experience.
however, UCSB has some really strong STEM programs so if you're more interested in studying that, i would recommend you visit some of their departments
silvari I am trying to be a zoologist. I want to major in zoology for UCSB. However UCLA doesn’t have zoology but does have an ecology and evolution major that I think can be used to be a zoologist. I am kind of scared of the rigor of UCLA but at the same time maybe every uc is equally rigorous. Also I’ve read that living in isla vista for UCSB is cheapish. I am considering this because I’m trying to minimize my costs whenever I do move out of dorms Where as I know housing for places around UCLA are expensive I think. I’m encouraged by most of my peers to go to UCLA Just because it’s one of the top schools and its reputation.
@@mariamolina2544 zoology is a bit of an obscure major, but that doesn't mean you can't fit that into whatever career path you intend on going into! for instance, i really want to work as a commercial artist as a concept artist, but they don't offer that here, so in a way, i'm taking courses that allow me to fulfill that goal in mind because of how open-ended it is (as opposed to stem majors where a lot of classes are required for you to take in order to graduate). i'd definitely advise you to discuss this with members of the biology department/ related majors you think would be useful at both ucsb/ucla to get a better idea of the programs.
Phuong Vy Tran Comm is definitely one of our easier majors to complete and most students complete it in about 3 years and usually pick up a double major and complete them both in a total of 4 years
My favorites were Anacapa and San Nicholas, but that's my personal bias :) San Nic was next to the UCen, & dining commons so it was super convenient but Anacapa had the best view and was closest to the science buildings for me (Since I was a STEM major!)
Yes there is! You can live in downtown SB, Isla Vista, Goleta, or some of the off-campus university housing! Honestly there's a ton of options for you to select from :) If you have any questions about them then let me know!
Kelsey Remige, I would like to live near or on campus, but I’m not sure what is the best option. I’m a very open, social and philosophical person but due to visual impairment, I would like to live in walking distance. I study psychology in Europe but will attend Santa Barbara this fall on exchange, so that’s why I am a little unsure about where to live. I enjoy music and skateboarding but perhaps it’s mainly surfing? A 420/alc and petfriendly person as well, but I’m not sure if that is not possible on campus and therefore the other options you are mentioning might be better areas. Hope to hear from you 🤗
Hey Kelsey thank you so much for making this informative video :-) its really useful & I’ve learnt a lot of things about UCSB. You mentioned that there was a lot of coursework given while you were at UCSB, what major did you take?
Hey Jeanieth! I was a Paleobiology major (under the Earth Science program) and spatial science minor (under the Geography program). :) If you have any questions let me know!
Hey! I loved this video and found it suuuper helpful. I'm a prospective freshman applicant and was wondering what diversity was like at UCSB? I personally am African and I come from a place in southern California where it's very diverse and would like to know what I should expect not only at the school but in the Isla Vista area. Also, what do you think of the nightlife there? Are there fun things to do during weekends other than parties? Would you dub it as a "college town?" Thanks so much!
sea-ham abdi Diversity wise, UCSB is actually the most diverse UC campus (statistically) even though I would say the majority of the students there are either Asian or white. Even with that being said, when I would visit other UC campuses, I would definitely noticed that they are less diverse than UCSB. We also have a very large multi cultural program at UCSB where there is countless clubs that go along with many different cultures and religions that are very prominent on campus and tend to hold a lot of events that are really fun and all inclusive!! I would say that IV is about the same because it is mainly the students from UCSB with only a small fraction either being outside families or people from SBCC. Santa Barbara, in my opinion, is not really a “college town” in the traditional sense. It definitely has a lot of influences from UCSB, but it’s it’s own city that adds another perspective to the surrounding area and it kind of gives you a more grown-up feel. Even with that being said, it has a lot of fun nightlife areas and also has some nicer bars that are fun on the weekends to hang out with friends at. The nightlife it’s self is more of club-ish bars, but there are huge hits especially on Thursdays for college night. Besides going out and drinking, there are many things to do around including outdoors activities like hiking and the beach, as well as A zoo and some other fun things to do. Honestly there’s so many things that you can do in Santa Barbara that even after being there for four years, I still felt like I didn’t do everything I could’ve. Hope this helps!
Yes you can :) It will be hard to get in to the frat parties unless you have friends at UCSB in those frats, but you can definitely still go to parties :)
UCSB loves foreign exchange students! It's difficult to get in no matter if you're international or not, but if you have good grades and good extracurriculars, you should be chillin :)
I think it's definitely harder to get into than when i was admitted, but definitely not impossible (obviously). I would say, just try your best in your classes and make sure to diversify your activities outside of the classroom. IMO, UCSB would rather have students who can bring something different to the community and add to its experience than to have someone with straight A's and no extracurriculars. But hey, that's just my opinion. :D
I’m gonna be 22 when I get out of the marine corps. I’m currently going to college on line and would love to go to ucsb. Do you know if they offer any programs for veterans wishing to transfer.
Yes we do! I don't know too much information on it but if you want to check more information out visit www.sa.ucsb.edu/veterans/home or call the UCSB visitor center and they'll give you more information :)

According to Dr.Dru college relationships are at an inherent disadvantage due to so many options, youth & hormones, and people from different locations but I know A LOT of couple who ended up happily married to this day.
I actually went to school at UCSB...graduated in 2003...Only school I wanted to attend...Had fun getting my degree with Dean's Honors...GLTA
But overall UCSB sounds like a great school, love the location, chill but not romantically commiting people, question mark, and really great academics.
dude my best bro worked hard and played hard. he partied a shit ton in his fresh to soph years, then not as much in his jr and sr years. dude was a party animal, but did very well academically(3.65 GPA)
ahhh I want to go here so bad but I live in nyc and out of state tuition is so expensive :(
"What's your point, Vanessa?"--love, class of '85 PhD.
Whoa this just popped up in my recommended. Hope you are doing well Kelsey!
Thanks Andrew!! Hope you're doing well too!!
i’m thinking of going to ucsb as an exchange student. i already started college in my country, but is there a possibility to go to ucsb for an exchange year?
Can you make a video going into detail on the living situation like prices and options!
I want to go there I think just now.
Edit: also wondering about safety as a girl out there alone
Edit: (again I’m sorry) When you say afraid of commitment, does that exclude friends?
Trying to choose between UCSB & Berkeley 😫
Kacy Gilliam UCSB all the way, I made a video saying why I won’t be going to Berkeley
UCSB for sure!! I live in the Berkeley area and honestly it seems depressing af there. My friend transferred from Berkely to UCLA because she hated it so much. It’s just so competitive and noooooooo fun
very informative!
Can you please tell me about the sociology program? Is it any good?,
Did you know any English majors and about their experiences?📚
Also, how is the study abroad program? I want to do the Seoul University one or the Barcelona summer...
I’m a pre-Comm major too. Will transfer in the Fall. How are the classes?
I’m thinking about transferring to sb from a community college and I wanted to know if they have a good graphic design program?
My first week at UCSB a SB sheriff gave me an "Open Container" ticket. Drink on the grass, not the sidewalk. Class of '92.
Is UCSB a good school to attend if I’m interested in business? I’m hearing that it’s very limited when it comes to business. I was admitted a few days ago and since I got rejected from USC/UCLA it’s the school I’m leaning towards at the moment
same here!!! I was wondering the same
No business major.
💜💜
Woah! Your house went into the ocean? Landslide? Do a video about that!
Ooouuu the tea ☕️
Very informative 👏
My sister just got into UCSB a a week ago and shes leaving soon!
If the 2016 election year was bad, imagine me going in this year😅
Im deciding between UCD and UCSB.
I got accepted to UCLA and UCSB . I’m conflicted to what school to choose to be honest!
what's your major/ interests? intended career? if you're more arts driven i'd definitely pick LA over SB as their art program is miles ahead of ours (speaking as a current art major btw). of course, since both are broadly defined as "research universities" there's a high chance that you're going to have to encounter a lot of theory based classes rather than hands on practice, but busy work is unavoidable in nearly every major unless you have upper division standing/ prior instructor approval. as for the surrounding culture, honestly, i feel like SB is a bit insular, and gets kind of old after the first month, but i'd be lying if i said i wasn't biased because i'm currently trying to transfer to UCLA. this is just my personal experience.
however, UCSB has some really strong STEM programs so if you're more interested in studying that, i would recommend you visit some of their departments
silvari I am trying to be a zoologist. I’m encouraged by most of my peers to go to UCLA Just because it’s one of the top schools and its reputation.
silvari also are you saying UCSB can get boring after a while ?
@@mariamolina2544
zoology is a bit of an obscure major, but that doesn't mean you can't fit that into whatever career path you intend on going into! for instance, i really want to work as a commercial artist as a concept artist, but they don't offer that here, so in a way, i'm taking courses that allow me to fulfill that goal in mind because of how open-ended it is (as opposed to stem majors where a lot of classes are required for you to take in order to graduate). i'd definitely advise you to discuss this with members of the biology department/ related majors you think would be useful at both ucsb/ucla to get a better idea of the programs.
I got accepted into UCSB for pre-communications so I just wanted to know if it’s hard to get the full major + graduate in 4 years...
Phuong Vy Tran Comm is definitely one of our easier majors to complete and most students complete it in about 3 years and usually pick up a double major and complete them both in a total of 4 years
@@KelseyRemige what about as a transfer student? I’m guessing it’d be an easy one to complete in 2 years as well? (I hope so)
Hey, I'm 99% positive I'm going to UCSB this year! I was just wondering if any dorms are better than the others?
My favorites were Anacapa and San Nicholas, but that's my personal bias :) San Nic was next to the UCen, & dining commons so it was super convenient but Anacapa had the best view and was closest to the science buildings for me (Since I was a STEM major!)
@@KelseyRemige Hey thats great cause I'm Pre-Bio!
@@KelseyRemige and thank you! I commited last week!

I'm planning on going to UCSB but I'm not a party person. Should that change my perspective on attending?
Definitely not! Not everyone parties and there is definitely a scene for more introverted students or people who don't usually party :)
hi !! do you know what dorms are most convenient for psych majors??
lovekoos are you going to UCSB in the fall 2020?? Sorry I saw jungkook and I’m going in the fall!! And I was interested in psych too
Great video, thanks for sharing! What is off-campus housing like? Are there good options readily available?
Hope to hear from you 🤗
Love your sense of humor!
Thank you for the quick reply ☺️ do you have instagram maybe? It’ll be easier if I talk to you there! My instagram is @jeaniethx
yes! mine is @kelseyremige! DM me with any questions your have
What if ur a small friend group person
I wonder if you can still go to UCSB parties if you attend USC?
Yes you can :) It will be hard to get in to the frat parties unless you have friends at UCSB in those frats, but you can definitely still go to parties :)
hey! I would like to know if it is a university recommended for foreign students? Is it difficult to get in?
UCSB loves foreign exchange students! It's difficult to get in no matter if you're international or not, but if you have good grades and good extracurriculars, you should be chillin :)
How hard is the political science/pre-law major?
Derek Connors oof. Can u share some of your experiences please?
than you for doing this video. i've a question, is it hard to get admitted?
I think it's definitely harder to get into than when i was admitted, but definitely not impossible (obviously). I would say, just try your best in your classes and make sure to diversify your activities outside of the classroom. IMO, UCSB would rather have students who can bring something different to the community and add to its experience than to have someone with straight A's and no extracurriculars. But hey, that's just my opinion. :D
thank you!! i've sailed since i was 9 so i think that would help me
Easier to get admitted than at UCLA or Berkeley for nearly the same quality of education. More likely to get more financial aid too I think.
I’m gonna be 22 when I get out of the marine corps. I’m currently going to college on line and would love to go to ucsb. Do you know if they offer any programs for veterans wishing to transfer.
Yes we do! I don't know too much information on it but if you want to check more information out visit www.sa.ucsb.edu/veterans/home or call the UCSB visitor center and they'll give you more information :)
what were your stats
Hey I’m having like an epidemic on where to uc Davis Or ucsb. I applied both as undeclared major and am beginning to think majoring art. Is the art major good or do you have any knowledge on it ? Thanks
