*This is a video for beginners to using a compass. This will explain how to use a compass to shoot an azimuth (take a bearing) to a distant object for navigation. Also, how to set your compass to a known bearing and sight it for navigation. Again this is a first step for those who are just learning how to navigate with a compass. I am using the Suunto MC2 for the demonstration.

this is where a notebook comes in handy, marking our directions as we travel. combining what you are explaining and incorporating it w what Shaun (Corporals Corner) explains sure is helpful.

For those of you who are new to using a compass. Get one. Preferably decent one but not a button compass.
Get outside and practice shooting azimuths to various objects that you can see.
Get good at aiming the compass.
Practice aiming at the ends of bridges. The azimuth will different for each end of a bridge.
This will help you visualize the difference in the angles and how far off you would be if you were walking that azimuth at the given distance.
For advanced aiming practice. Aim at opposite sides of water towers. There will be a slight difference depending on the size of the tower.
Practice with a friend and see if you come up with the same answers.
Above all practice a lot.

It used to not be my favorite activity but the more I have trained with it, the more accurate I have become. The more accurate I get, the more fun it becomes. Hi Matt, Land navigation is one of my favorite topics. I also agree that it under rated by many people and is vital to keeping the outdoors person safe. Although, I do feel that magnetic declination is also worth mentioning...anyhow, another great and valued video!

Great info. Also, remember to keep your compass away from metal when you are trying to get a reading. Huge pieces of ferrous metal like a car can really mess up your readings. Smaller stuff you might have on your body (e.g. neck knife) can mess them up if held close. Remember, it’s a magnet!
Very true John and a good point. I have seen even small pieces of jewelry tilt the needle a bit. It is something to really watch for as it can throw you off track pretty bad if you don't realize what is happening. Thanks for watching and commenting!
good job...!! Solid advice also. Look at the deaths from folks straying from a wilderness trail for some reason and not being able to find their way back. Simple land nav and topo map reading can save your life.....

Thanks for the explanation, what would the procedure be to find a straight line using coordinate points through a heavily wooded property? I know where all 4 corners are and 3 of the lines but I'm trying to figure out how to mark out a straight line from one point to another through a heavily wooded area without hiring a surveyor if possible. Thanks!
Where do you keep your little declination adjustment tool after you change out your neck cord on the MC2 to pace beads?
What version of the MC-2 is that? Which one should I get for North America? I went to go buy one and the had the more expensive one (global) and some metric ones and I didn’t know which one to get. Thanks in advance!
What type Compass are you using? New to survival Bushcraft I think of myself more of a prepper. Do you know of a good survival School in the Southeast I live in South Georgia just about in Florida if you do not have your own could you recommend one would like to start with the weekend and then work my way up from there. I own 2 of them and I have found them to be excellent. I actually do teach with The Pathfinder School LLC. We recently did a Basic Survival class down in Watkinsville Ga. There is a place there called Georgia Bushcraft and they do a lot of different events there. They have a website so that would probably be worth looking into for you. Please confirm that if I KNOW which way I want to go I adjust the bezel to “red in the shed”
If I am going Magnetic North I orientate my body to “red in the shed” pick something in the distance and walk to it, then repeat until I get to where I am going?
If you want to go North, dial North (0/360 Degrees) to the top of the bezel and then align your body so that Red is in the shed. At that time you will be facing magnetic North. Whatever your desired direction of travel is, that is what you dial to the top of the bezel and once you align red in the shed that is the the direction you will be heading.
I'm really struggling to find high detail topo maps. I'm looking for 1:10000 UTM topo map for hiking, hunting, and land nav practice. REI, Sportsman's Wharehouse, USGS, don't sell them anymore. Please help.

No mention of declination? This is a good way to get lost when taking bearings from a map.
Hi Pete, I agree with you wholeheartedly that declination is a very important consideration when working with a map however, that is not the topic in this video. This is part 1 for beginners who have never used a compass. This is to familiarize them with how it functions and how to dial in and sight their compass at a particular bearing. This didn't include any relations between map and compass. That would be for a different video. Many people get intimidated by compass use so I tried to create a very simple multi part series to get people familiar with it first. Map and compass will at some point be a different series. This one is building towards PAUL Navigation and self mapping. Thanks for tuning in.
I just bought a Suunto baseplate compass. Ive looked all over the web, wth is that lil skinny black arrow for???
It's an inclinometer. It is used to measure angles, determine heights of trees, angles of slopes, etc. I handy little addition!

I've watched exactly 1-2 videos out of way too many nav and compass videos than I can count that has even mentioned the black clinometer needle in the bezel area.
It would have been great to be told to ignore it and that it had no relevance except in advanced compass level use that most people won't run into.
As a newbie exploring all these kinds of videos, that drove me a little crazy because everything was being explained away except for that little stupid piece.

Bearings are from 0-90 degrees. Azimuths are from 0-360 degrees. Wrong terminology in video
I am operating using terms of 0 to 360. As you said, that is an azimuth.
