I've been wanting to get into multi-day trips in the rockies. Seems most people recommend this compass. I really appreciate the knowledge you've shared!
Superb explanation of the MC2 compass features. I spent 30 years in the US Army, with much of it in the field or flying medevac helicopters and feel I know a thing or two about navigating with a map & compass. This video is simply outstanding and offers the clearest explanation of compass features & magnetic declination I've come across -- very well done! I would have liked to see more about using the clinometer, but this is hands-down a terrific video for everything else about this compass.
FINALLY! I've watched at least a dozen videos on this topic and this is the first one that actually explained the features of the compass. Most videos praised the Suunto MC2, but they don't get into the nitty-gritty. Thank you very much. I hope you get a million subscribers and get rich in the process!
Just bought Commenga and the military map and land navigation manual. Never really learned. I all of the sudden started feeling I had to learn,so I am taking the hint and trying. Thank you for your a service .
Best video on the internet for the person who doesn't know anything like me. I'm about to order all of those books. I just love knowledge. Thanks so very much. No one on the internet that i've seen has a better video to teach someone how to get started in the navigation system. And believe me I'm a hard core researcher. I feel like I just hit the jackpot for getting started. Thanks so very much!!!
I have the Suunto MC-2 D, my kids and I are trying orienteering as an outdoor activity, and your thorough review of the compass was extremely helpful to both my kids... and myself. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for a great review video. The parts where you show the declination adjustment screw on the back and the tool that comes with the compass to use it, and where you point out all the luminescent parts on the front, were especially helpful to me. You can't see any of that very well, on the websites of retailers that offer to sell the compass. Semper Fi.
Greatly appreciate this video!! Very informative since I'm in the look out for the best, easiest, affordable, and multifunctional all rounder compass for navigation. This's just ticking all the boxes so far.
Thank you very much Mea! I have watched many videos and my one complaint is that they do not offer any close ups of the area they are speaking of thus I have learned from their mistakes. This has made me produce better videos for everyone out there to watch. Have a great day! Ken
One of the things that drives me nuts with some vids is they start off saying enter your bearing on the compass. Ok, but where did you get the bearing from. They skip over the whole part of computing the bearing from a map probably because they don't understand the concepts of True North vs Magnetic North and Declination.
This is a great review/walkthrough of the suunto compass. Looking into getting my first compass soon and have been eyeing the suunto. Thanks for the vid, you did a great job of explaining to someone with no idea what any of those markings are for, understand. I still need to learn some of the lingo and reading the manual I believe would help me a lot but your vid was very thorough and I appreciate you making it.
Great compass I got one, my only concern was breaking it. it's not tough like the military issue compass but I found that it fits perfect in plastic soap dish case 1.99 from wall mart it's like it was made for it so with all the gear I carry in my ruck i don't worry about it getting broken if I drop my ruck out of vehicle in a hurry.
Much thanks, great and thorough information, best explanation I've seen, I do have the map and compass book , I have been debating between the Suunto MC2 and the K&R Alpin Pro this vid proved i should and will be getting the Suunto
Excellent video! Camera quiality is great so one can see detials good. Audio quality is great. Speed of talking is perfect to understand what is discussed, explaination is to the point without any nonesense. Good speaking pauses between subjects to audience can follow. Perfect. Class example of a excellent tutorial video. Question: at 12:47, shouldn't the bearing be 63degree instead of 61? As the increments are in 2 degree's and it seems top index line is between the 1st and 2nd increments
Excellent video The first one I've seen so far with clear and understandable instructions Thank you so much for the valuable information you have provided and I hope you make more videos in the future Greetings from Australia
I just found your channel. I have subscribed and set the notification. Thank you for your service and thank you for taking the time to put out this great video.
Great video and instruction. I might suggest though that the quality of this compass has gone downhill. I had the MC2 /D compass for about a 6 months but it recently developed a huge bubble. I called the warranty line and told the person I live in Tucson. After looking for 10 minuets he said that maybe I could try sending it to a place in Ogden Utah then they might be able to send it to Finland and I could get it back in 1 to 2 months. I asked for the address of the place in Utah. He looked for about 5 minutes and then told me I needed proof of purchase. I asked if having a compass was proof that I bought one but he said he needed the receipt which I didn't have. So after a 20 min call I was told to go kick rocks. Bad quality no warranty help. I will make sure to warn my friends to stay away from Suunto!
Thank you! I'm new to the compass, this helped with both basic and sophisticated instructions. Appreciated the book recommendations too, great idea to carry in the backcountry.
Your overview was thorough, quite helpful and a useful guide to setting magnetic declination. The links are handy as well. The only suggestion I could make is to list the authors and titles of the books you referenced.
Great job. I especially liked the details you gave on the parts of the Suunto. Note the graduations on the declination scale are the inclination scale too. Inclination would make a good topic. It can be useful in several areas to include avalanche, hillside orienteering, and geology to measure dip of rocks. Always set, never forget, the declination if you work or travel to another area.
Thanks very much. As a total beginner, this vid has helped me more than anything else re: compass use and basic navigation. Think I'll get this exact compass and a map or two, then Practice!! Cheers!
Great video. I wanted to learn about compasses and bought three makes. My suunto global mirror had a 2°+ 'deviation' from the get-go. Sent it back no problem. Luckily I had other compasses to compare, all brand new. Also read about compasses switching poles and the earth itself switching poles. I read about spinning ships and planes to correct 'deviation' because of all the metal to set their compasses. OMG! Thank God I only have to ride a subway.
Sir, respectively, I will tell you that if you are using the SUUNTO Compass, as you used to use your lensatic compass, you are using the SUUNTO in a probable wrong way. You are supposed to use the lensatic compass as you did at the beginning of this video, that is, close to your facial cheek(s). However, to use a SUUNTO Compass, --> to take advantage of both of the "sights" of the SUUNTO, you need to take your azimuth bearings at arms' length, using the sights as in a rifle. Just trying to help you, I had the same erroneous notion as you showed, --> you from the Marine Corps, and I from my Army days. Otherwise, your video was excellent, and very informative. Thank you, Sir. Oscar
Thanks. This is very helpful for someone who wears eyeglasses. My frames are ferrous so holding the baseplate further away will save me from many wrong turns.😅
Great Review. Mines just arrived so looking forward to using it. I came across your channel some years ago via Darren Funky Prepper, when I was getting back into bushcraft and prepping. Good to be back, having taken a couple of years away with family stuff and getting into photography. Cheers.
Okay, finally. I understood the majority of what was said in this video after watching many, many others. Definitely one to save to a playlist to review again later as this is the compass I ultimately want to get.
Thank you. I will be sharing this information with friends and family in my social bubble. We are all hikers and adventurers. Again, thank you for sharing this information. I will pass on your good deed.
Maps are almost always already oriented with north being up on them, so generally it's better to go off of that than orienting the map yourself. If you know your local magnetic declination and have it set on your compass already, just have it pointing north on the map, figure how many degrees from north your heading is, turn your compass to that heading so that it is forward, and then rotate your body so that the magnetic arrow is in the doghouse/shed, and your bearing is directly ahead of you.
Thanks for the orientation on my new compass. Question for you: Does one need to have a topographic map of the area for the compass to be of use, or will a simple road-map from a gas station do? Thanks again!
Good video. Just got an mc-2, though here in most of Indiana you're usually only a half mile from grid laid out roads. I guess I might use it in hilly terrain in the parks to keep from going in circles, but I've been roaming those places for the better part of fifty years without a compass. I was a little surprised how much I forgot about orienteering since the army. Thanks for the declination link and refresher course. An inaccurate compass or knowing how to use it might be worse than none at all.
I tried to buy the one you have but got the MC2 USGS Global one which is the inch one but also has Km scales on it also, so confusing as to which one is the one you really need. I live in North America.
The global will work just as well as the one I use so no worries. Here is an article which talks about this: www.backpacker.com/skills/gear-review-suunto-mc-2-global-compass Hope this helped? Ken
My Silva compass misses the black rim holding it from underneath. I bought a broke compass in milsurp to sacrifice it for the part. How do i remove it, since the screw there just rotates the screen?
Nice compass, very similar to my old Silva Ranger (with clinometer) which had the declination adjustment screw. It lasted 40 years and then a bubble got in, but it still works.

Great information. I’m looking at Amazon trying to figure out witch one to get. I don’t need the global version. But they have usgs/UTM scales. Should I just get that one. Or metric UTM scales. I was just gonna go with the USGS/UTM. What’s your opinion. Thanks.
I recently bought the Suunto MC-2 G (global) USGS version of the compass. I really like it. Any pointers on actually putting this material into practice on your own? I can't really go hide a pin from myself and navigate to it, etc. Thanks for the patient video.
Try searching on Google on how to setup a land navigation course or better yet I would recommend going to a book store and look for some books on land navigation. Some of the books will actually have how to set up practice courses in them. I hope this helps? Ken
An excellent video on this compass! The close-up on the various compass parts was outstanding.Question: Which specific model compass is this? I ask because I ordered a MC-/360/IN/D/NH, which looks like it might be this one, but received a MC-2 NH USGS instead, and was wondering what advantage/disadvantage that might be.
+DannyH Hi Danny. This is the NH (Northern Hemisphere) model. The one difference that I see on Suunto's website for the model you describe as ordering is that it doesn't have a luminous bezel ring like mine. Other than that it is the exact same compass. Ken
Can you please tell me the exact model number of your suunto mc2 they all look different on different websites, different scales, some don't have glow ring, some have no mirror, some don't have the dog house. I have my lensatic compass from military but also always forget declination adjustment
This video was very helpful, I did see one other video, the guy when looking thru the window he had his arms out like pointing a hand gun, does it matter which form you use? Keep up the video and thank you for the video
Really enjoyed your explanation ,my MC 2 has markings on both sides of the black cover on side has 25 30 35 40 and 45 degree marks all with 4 lines under some closer than others can you enlighten me as what these are for thanks
It’s a very good video you made. I have the MC2-G, ..G standing for global. Are you sure you’re MC2 is a global campus? I actually don’t know the answer to that but I’m curious.
should we get the global, or northern hemisphere version if we live in the US? Also, USGS UTM scales, Metric UTM scales and inch ruler, or USGS UTM scales & direction in Mils??
Either NH or Global would work, so I would choose the global. With regards degrees or Mils, unless you are in the Army, I would stick with degrees as that is the most widely used in civilian life. With regards scales and whether imperial or metric, match it to the maps you use. In the UK standard maps are Metric UTM typically 1:50,000 or 1:25, 000 so I would choose a compass to match those...
I can't find this exact compass to buy. So many variations and now Suunto has versions that have the name "SUUNTO" right inside the inner circle making it more difficult to line up and I can't find one with the glowing bezel and without the "SUUNTO" in the middle and also imperial. Dang!
I've been wanting to get into multi-day trips in the rockies. Seems most people recommend this compass. I really appreciate the knowledge you've shared!
One of the basic compass 🧭 videos I've ever watched. Please keep it up.
What an outstanding tutorial! Simple, but thorough. Your USMC training shows through. Thank you very much.

True. All others half learned
Just bought Commenga and the military map and land navigation manual. Never really learned. I all of the sudden started feeling I had to learn,so I am taking the hint and trying. Thank you for your a service .
+Paul DiDonato Thank you.
At last someone who actually shows how to set the magnetic declination. Thanks for this excellent video!
"American Backpacker" (Andy) also does it.
True. Probably nobody knows it 😂
Excellent close up explanation! Finally! And with a wooden pointer. Thank you.
Excellent job with a detailed explanation with knowledge, integrity and a clear understandable presentation. Thank you for your service and be safe 😎
Fantastic video. I liked that you went slow in pointing out the visuals.

What's the difference between MC& 2D and

The best and clearest video on any product, if not a compass!! Congratulations! And thanks
This is the best video i came across very clear and easy to understand thank you
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just getting started and your video has been the clearest so far . Thank you again. Keep up the good work.
Great video - takes his time to clearly explain the basic steps of navigation. Thanks

To prevent wearing away, paint bottom information on base plate compass with quick dry clear nail polish.

The new MC2 don’t have that black portion of the red arrow on the dial. Only the half red arrow. Thanks for a great tutorial.
Great video kjumper1 ... you are obviously a great teacher ... keep up the good work !
Thank you very much!
congratulations.....that review of that compass was first class.....regards from England...
Thank you very much Lee! I'm glad that you liked the video.
Ken
great video, thank you very much. I bought one of these a while back and haven't used it. Just now breaking it out an your video is awesome.
You're welcome!
I have the MC2-G, I like the way they work. Also, great job explaining on your vid.

This is a great refresher, thanks a lot! I'm using it for a vegetation mapping class.
Thanks so much for putting this together. You did a nice job, can't wait to try it out myself.
Thanks for the orientation on my new compass. Question for you: Does one need to have a topographic map of the area for the compass to be of use, or will a simple road-map from a gas station do? Thanks again!
Very helpful and informative - thank you!!
Your video wins. I watched other videos and omg, yours is muah!
very nice and informative video. thank you for your time and effort and may God bless you too.
Clearly stated review, nice job. Great compass to purchase if you plan to advance your orienteering skills beyond basic.
Nice job I will have my channel up and running next Friday
Keep up the good work

Nice Job. I was waiting on you to say how it can be difficult to use a military compass lol. Great Video! Keep up the Good Work. PATHFINDERS UP!!!!
Excellent review! Very professional.
Highly informative video

Can you explain the difference between the MC2 G & MC2 PRO? I'm looking this compass on REI.
Oh my god, you have the best tutorial ever! Thank you so much :-)
I tried to buy the one you have but got the MC2 USGS Global one which is the inch one but also has Km scales on it also, so confusing as to which one is the one you really need. I live in North America.
The global will work just as well as the one I use so no worries. Here is an article which talks about this:

I’m confused. Other videos show that if it’s W declination to add but when I set my declination it subtracts. Someone please help
Thank you for the teaching.
Great video , Thankyou . You are a squared away Marine !
Great video! I like your style of teaching.

Can you please tell me the exact model number of your suunto mc2 they all look different on different websites, different scales, some don't have glow ring, some have no mirror, some don't have the dog house. I have my lensatic compass from military but also always forget declination adjustment
The new ones are messed up with suunto branding logo eating half of the black line inside
Good job, this is the best type of compass.
Thank you for your hard work
Bonjour , how to recognize a Suunto MC2 G
Global system ?
difference between SUUNTO MC-2
NH Mirror Compass and Suunto MC2 Global system?
Somebody... what is that X sign? Mine has E instead of X, but i've seen compasses with FF, C, S... Any idea?
This video was very helpful, I did see one other video, the guy when looking thru the window he had his arms out like pointing a hand gun, does it matter which form you use? Keep up the video and thank you for the video

Nice close up shots!
Really enjoyed your explanation ,my MC 2 has markings on both sides of the black cover on side has 25 30 35 40 and 45 degree marks all with 4 lines under some closer than others can you enlighten me as what these are for thanks
How do you know which world region the MC2 is for? Mine says MC-2 USGS
Really nice review with some basic instruction.
Thank you!
It’s a very good video you made. I have the MC2-G, ..G standing for global. Are you sure you’re MC2 is a global campus? I actually don’t know the answer to that but I’m curious.
Great video thanks for info can you tell me the exact model you have when I look there is different types of models of the mc-2
should we get the global, or northern hemisphere version if we live in the US?
Dang!
Well done. Thank you for your help and understanding and good explanation , Cheers.
