Palm was a major mobile device manufacturer from the late '90s to '00s responsible for many innovations that ushered in the modern smartphone era. Before Android or iOS, Palm PDAs and early smartphones took the business world by storm and spread to home users as well. With a massive, open app library and minimalist, yet intuitive OS, it's easy to understand why. Despite their age, you might be surprised how much these oldschool pocket computers have in common with the latest flagships even today!
In this video, we take a look at a new-in-box Palm Treo 700p, one of the last Palm smartphones produced for North America way back in 2006!
See what else I'm up to!

I loved this phone. I could listen to internet radios in my car. That was way before there were any apps for this. It was more complicated but so much fun and high tech back then.

I had a Treo 750 and I remember connecting my ThinkPad T61p to it via bluetooth while out and about to access the internet over 3G and feeling like I was living in the future.

So T-mobile Sidekicks (known as HipTops in Australia) don't have CDs for the software?

The 128mb of RAM was quite a lot for a device like this, since the operating system, Palm OS, was very efficient in terms of memory requirements. Most apps needed a very small amount of the 60mb available. Good point about using the SD card for larger files.

I had a Treo 650 , it was great, but I think that they where not a great sales success because they lacked wifi. In order for these phones to prove their worthiness they needed internet access, otherwise they where basically just another device to place calls or sms. Unfortunately, back at that time, edge data connectivity was so expensive (at least in Latin America) and the lack of wifi on these devices prevented them for mass usage.
At the same time, Blackberry was so strong and forced carriers to offer attractive data plans, which were not available for other phones such as treos or Nokias. So, the big winner was Blackberry.
I remember that the Treo ran smoothly, there were a lot of palm apps, the sd added a lot of value to the device. However, the lack of affordable data plans prevented it from a greater success. It looked great, however it was a little bit bulky and the keyboard was not great, it was kinda fluffy.
Because without edge it was basically useless (or so expensive) for what I needed at the time (mobile email, & chat with my business peers), it switched to a Blackberry 8100 and it was a hell of a difference. The BB lacked the great software library of treos, but it did so nicely what I needed: email on the go, basic calendar, open pdf attachments and photos, and it took photos, had an excellent and affordable data plan, notifications worked like a charm, and even more : the 8100 BB Pearl was stylish (so the treo), elegant and even lighter and slimmer: the perfect companion at the time.
It is a shame that the Treo didn't had the success of other devices, it deserved a better place in the smartphones history. Thanks for the video, brings me back good memories.
    Regards from México.

It's really true--on the one hand, Palm was so far ahead of their time, but it was poor choices like that which ultimately caused them to fall behind. Perhaps if they'd been under different management things would look quite different today.

I still have my Treo 700p and I miss using it. I continued to use it all the way up to October of 2010, even though Android had a very strong hold in the smartphone market at that point.

I used a Palm as my daily driver until 2011! And even then, it wasn't until years later that I felt like Android truly replaced it for me. And of course, I still use Palms as a hobby to this day. :)

    Why question mark though?
I used to have Palm Treo 650, and I consider it the best communicator because of its fantastic keyboard. The buttons are small, but the shape allow you to type with confidence.

The title is more about the anticipated reaction, not questioning the Treo itself. Plenty of people nowadays would be too young to remember, and plenty of others didn't pay attention to the industry before the iPhone. It's always fun to watch people be mindblown at the tech they never knew existed in the early days!

@@LucasLive yeah, I sometimes feel like the next generations would see these like some Dwemer machinery, if you know what I mean.
