I am so missing my family...my son, daughter in law and two wee grandsons. I'm stuck in New York but thank you for the ride. They're in Marchmont by the Links....I wanted to shout..."Stop! let me out...I'll walk from here!"
Amazing. If it wasn't for people like you we here in New Zealand would never be able to enjoy such places. You are one of the best video youtubers. I have watched many of your videos more than once. Remember 2011 we lost our city of Christchurch and our home from an earthquake so its nice to enjoy yours.
Would like to see Gilmerton and mordun, photos of council houses in leith small ones and bigger ones in 1960s,top story club, second floor for twelve to thirteen year olds 1960s,where they played their bands, any photos of Eric Faulkner in liberton high school late sixties,in his high school band, youth orchestra, any photos of him in Edinburgh.
Hi Steve ... I know this is one of your earlier vlogs, but I have to say I enjoy exploring with you with no music tracks. That is just my preference. Makes your videos more 'real'. There's no sound track to real life. :)
Steve thanks so much for this.. my Aunt lived in Niddrie in Edinburgh for 20 odd years until she passed a few years ago. Me and my mum, who passed away in May past loved coming over from N.Ireland to visit. This tour brought back some lovely memories. ❤
As a magical entertainer, I did most of my shows in and around Edinburgh, I never thought I would miss it. But since Covid, I have not been back for almost a year( I was there 4/5 times a week) So seeing so many of my old haunts is lovely, and dare I say a little nostalgic. Loving this thank you very much.
Wow. Just...wow. What a glorious day you enjoyed! Thank you so much for all the time and petrol you spent to make this wonderful video. I am amazed at the intersections that don't have traffic lights, but not even stop signs. Uncontrolled intersections in the U.S. would cause massive pile-ups every where, as most of our drivers feel that they always deserve the right of way and yield to nothing smaller than a train! I have gathered that wavy lines in the street are a warning that an intersection is coming up. In the U.S. that would just be a massive waste of paint! What a fabulous city is Edinburgh. Thank you so very much for the tour!
Haha I've driven quite a lot in the U.S. and I'm always terrified for the first couple of hours :D But I still love it :) Thanks for coming along on the tour!
So many potholes in the roads thought it was Manchester but it was the pleasant buildings and clean streets that gave it away. Thanks for a great video. keepsmilin.
Being confined to recliner due to cancer i love theses videos i just these videos, able to sit and watch the world go by. love Edinburgh a beautiful city.
I had to turn up my heating to sit through that! A raw, chilly day in Edinburgh. Thanks so much for that splendid tour. As a native of Glasgow, my visits to Edinburgh were not frequent enough for me to get to know it in any great detail. It's easy to travel between the two cities nowadays, but back in the 1950s it was quite a journey, and sometimes I had the excitement of doing it on the train hauled by a mighty steam engine. There has long been a rivalry between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and for some people not always a friendly one. Neil Munro, who wrote the famous Para Handy stories, also wrote about a rare old Glasgow character called "Erchie". Here is an extract in which the writer, meeting Erchie in the street, says he hasn't seen him for such a long time that he thought he was dead. "No, nor deid!" retorted Erchie. "Catch me! I'm nane o' the deein' kind! But I micht nearly as weel be deid, for I've been thae twa months in Edinburgh...There's mair o' a bustle on the road to Sichthill Cemetery ony day in the week that there is in Princes Street on a Setturday nicht. I had a bit job there for the last ten weeks, and the only pleesure I had was gaun doon noo and then to the Waverley Station to see the bonny wee trains frae Gleska.... "But it's an old saying, Erchie, that all the wise men in Glasgow come from the East - that's to say, they come from Edinburgh." "Yes, and the wiser they are the quicker they come," said Erchie.
What a wonderful message, thank you! I was born in Glasgow and now live in Edinburgh, and my parents always kept me well informed on all things from the west and never lost their accents :) thanks so much for getting in touch!
Great video: brought back so many happy mrmories, I was three years in Edinburgh in the 1960s for my University degree (LL.B) and it is amazing how little has changed since.
I came for the beautiful scenery and relaxing pace of the tour. I left feeling I might be able to drive confidently on your side of the street without destroying anything more than a few rental cars by the time I leave the city limits. Cheers from the US.
Enjoyed the trip around Edinburgh Steve. Worked there for 4 years for ‘the Widows’ found the people very friendly and a lot of fun, loved the haggis baps for breakfast!
Thank you for the drive. Missing Edinburgh. Was supposed to be there last April for 6 months but then the Hobgoblin came along. Of all the places in Europe that I have been to Edinburgh and the Highlands are the only repeat visits. Wonderful Country. I'll be back!
Thank you so much for the tour I live in the borders but due to covid we can’t travel to Edinburgh unless it’s essential , I haven’t been to Edinburgh for a year ! , I miss it so thank you for giving me an Edinburgh “fix”👍.
Thanks Steve, for a terrific tour of Edinburgh. I knew that Edinburgh was a large city, but I had no idea that it was huge. Beautiful city with a lot of history to be seen. Thanks again!
Thanks Steve for taking us along on this beautiful drive....what a treat!! I watched it in segments over 4 nights. The city is really nice...gorgeous architecture & I love the old town feel of it. I'm glad you were driving.....not used to being on the opposite side of the road & just navigating the turns & going thru intersections is SO different than what I'm used to here! Looks like they're doing quite an extension of the tram line.
Another great video. I grew up in Livingston in the 70s and trips to Edinburgh with my parents were a regular occurance. Many of the roads you showed brought back memories! Love it!
Thank you so much, this brings back some great memories. I spent a few years there as a student, lived in Newington. I loved the city atmosphere and the people and enjoyed exploring all the places from the Rebus novels.
Absolutely brilliant #SteveMarsh What memories. My sister in the early 70s. had a 'bedsit' in a big house on Newbattle Terrace and when you mentioned it, I had a tear in my eye. I used to go and stay with her, every 2nd fortnight as she was 10 years older than me. That's how I got to know and love #Edinburgh in those years. ♥♥♥
Loved that tour, my wife and I have stayed in Edinburgh 5 times now and love the city. last time was December 2018 for her birthday, had afternoon tea in Hollyrood House, walked the Royal Mile and went to the Playhouse Theatre, this video brought back great memories.
Another great video Steve each day as a 91 year old i watch your tours and it brings back so many happy memories.i was amazed to see how light the traffic was .As a resident of Edinburgh i often think we are very fortunate to live here.Thank you for a great tour of AULD REEKIE
Thank you so much for absolutely fantastic video! My first visit to Edinburgh was Jan/1957 from Vancouver,B.C. (Vancouver city was just 60 years old) our hotel was below the castle and when I opened the curtains and saw the castle all lit up I was blown away as that was first time I had seen such an old piece of history! Our introduction to Europe and very special! Barnie
Only found your channel a couple of weeks ago, I'm loving it and catching up on your older vlogs. I live in Kent and work in Central London. I love Edinburgh, stayed in Stockbridge for the Christmas market a few years ago. Also my friend was in the Royal Military Police stationed in Edinburgh castle back in the 1980s and I got to stay in the Castle for 2 or 3 days, not many civilians can say that. Best wishes Christine x
Steve ... for my mother’s 88th birthday celebration today, her children & grandchildren all gathered with her (via Zoom) to watch your video and, in addition to your comments, she provided us all with colourful stories from her early life in Edinburgh. Your video took us past Tollcross where my grandfather had a number of shops in the early 1960’s ... and we paused the video while my mother shared stories about that period of her life. Thank you!
John, Steve read my mind, what a fabulous way to celebrate your mother’s Birthday 🥳 I celebrated my 80th, 2020. we ‘golden oldies’ have many a fine story to tell, I have a wonderful videographer friend who has just finished the story of my life! It took her a year! I never realised my life had been so interesting 🤔 take care, best wishes from a ‘ Sassenach’ in Derby’s😊
I'm watching now... absolutely love Scotland especially the countryside. Since I'm new to your site I have a lot of catching up to do with your previously posted videos. Love traveling with you!
Thanks for the tour Steve, It bought back some great memories of my 2nd visit to Edinburgh. It's the first time I've not seen any Road cones or Seagulls on the heads of any Statues around the Royal Mile..😅😅 I stayed in Morningside at my friends flat, so the Bus took the same route as you did into the New Town, then on the Train to Glasgow via Falkirk..❤
Wonderful tour! Took me past the house I was born in (Stockbridge), my mother-in-law's house and my aunt, both in Comely Bank, where I used to work in George Street and a whole lot more. Loved it. Been overseas for 50 years so this was a fabulous memory tour.
Really enjoyed that Steve! I sat with my pocket street map open beside me and followed you around. Such a great city - I have missed visiting this year.
Thanks, mate, for the driving tour of Edinburgh. I have never been there, but lots of time in London. This tour reminds me of driving around the outer western suburbs of that enormous British city. --RB, Virginia, USA
Came home from work to find this wonderful video, beer in hand I sat and watched it all and was captivated by the clear day the wonderful sights and great commentary, thank you so much.
Love this, thank you for sharing! Great videos, we're working our way through all your posts. We visited in 2018, absolutely loved the city, and we were all set to come for Hogmanay in 2020....but then the pandemic came along. Hope to be back as soon as we can travel from the US. Thanks again, Steve!
Another day out without leaving home lol well done Steve, really enjoyable. O how I long to go there again, its amazing how you miss the simple things in life that we take for granted.Roll on better days where we can do all these things with pleasure. Thank you Steve.
Oh so true about missing the simple things in life that we took for granted before all this started! Amazing as well though how quickly we adapt to a new way of living, just hopefully for not too much longer!
Such a mesmerising journey through Edinburgh city. What a beautiful city, I only wished I had taken more time to explore it, rather than bypassing it. I hope to put that right in the near future. For now I have to contend with driving around Dartmoor, I did think about trying to capture my drive through my area, but I am sadly not very good with technology. Thank you for a wonderful video.
I live in Australia. I enjoy your videos especially those about Edinburgh. I’m a great fan of John Rankin and it’s great to see all the places that he refers to in his novels
That was a very enjoyable smooth ride around the wonderful architecturally beautiful City of Edinburgh, The Magnificent ‘Fettes’ College is very impressive! In a past life I have visited Edinburgh Caste, City Centre, Arthur’s Seat, Parliament Buildings, and Holyrood House and nearby Park, all fabulous places of interest, my favourite City is ‘Nottingham’ the place of my birth, with it’s connection to ‘Robin Hood’ and the famous Splendid Castle! ‘Edinburgh’ is a very close tie! thank you 🙏 Steve for this grand tour and fine commentary, good luck 🤞 with the ‘Lottery’ as Danube Street awaits! 👌🤗
Haha thank you! :) I love Nottingham too from the 2 times I've been there - once to the water sports centre many moons ago, and then more recently for the first ever 'Kilomathon', running 26km around the wonderful countryside between there and Derby. I just took my time and enjoyed all the wonderful scenery!
Wow, you did well covering 26km. Steve, I think my son entered that one, I live between Nottm. & Derby now, still beautiful countryside, but back & knees a bit dodgy, so no marathons for me, only yours, they don’t hurt a bit! take care, and thank you for taking the time to reply, Happy Easter 🐣 what’s left of it!🤗👋
Thanks for taking me along with you on this drive Steve. Appreciated your efforts immensely. One thing - Santa'd need to bring his number 1 game - all those chimney pots. Even be a sweeps nightmare!
Wow! What a fantastic video. I've not been back home for a while but I surprised myself at how many places and streets I remembered. Love your channel Steve. All the best from Melbourne. ( I need a wee trip home now)
13:43 - in November 2016, we've stayed at a small B&B at the righthand side of that street for about a week. Can't remember the name, but it was a very nice place run by an Indian family. It was the best holiday we had. We used to walk the same way from Dean Bridge you took there. Thank you for bringing back the memories, Steve. :)
Another excellent video Steve. Thanks very much. You've also brought me up to date on the new cycle lanes and tram works for when I'm back driving the buses :-)
I was born and brought up in Edinburgh, this is bringing back so many memories, although it’s a shame some of the old buildings in St Andrew’s Sq. now have a modern facade.
Really enjoyed watching this video, lived in Edinburgh all my life and even watching this video I am still learning new things and new places and routes to explore.
Another great video Steve. I was born in Edinburgh (Simpsons) but mainly brought up in Leith. Lived in Surrey now for 33 years but still have a great attachment to Auld Reekie. This was a wonderful nostalgic trip for me. 🙋♂️
Thanks for that tour Steve, but as an Edinburgh resident for nearly 80 years I must take issue with you over Greyfriars Bobby. The basic story of Greyfriars Bobby is completely true although some of the details - eg the identity of John Gray - are disputed. Bobby is mentioned in Edinburgh Corporatin records of the time and his licence was paid for by the Lord Provost. The fact that Walt Disney made a film of his story does not make it fiction.
Oh man this was a walk down memory lane!! Was at Uni in Edinburgh but moved south after I graduated. Not lived in Scotland since and that was 35 years ago, missing home more these days! This is a great video all around the toon!! Used to work as a despatch rider when I was a student so got to know all the back streets well!
Thanks for this interesting tour Steve. I am a member of the London Caledonian Society and last May I was in Edinburgh for a meeting at the New Club, Princes Street and I stayed at a hotel just off the Dalkieth Road, just past the Commonwealth Pool. This is an annual event and I will be there again next May. I love the city (I live in London) but I have difficulty walking long distances (after a bout of e-coli I have lost half of my left foot) I did manage to walk half of The Royal Mile. In Hanover Street I found a great pub for crinks and food called Milnes and I would recommend it to all visitors to Edinburgh.
@@steve-marsh Thanks I hope to do the complete mile, probably over two days this next time. Just watching your City walk (Water of Leith) so glad I came across your channel, I find it all so interesting.
Wonderful videos & commentaries, recently housebound and disabled, love Edinburgh. Find very relaxing, and let’s me visit Edinburgh, “even though housebound”, please keep up the excellent professional & friendly work. Kindest Regards Bobby
Hey, I've just found your channel and love it. Thank you. A Scotsman who enjoys his own country really much. Love it. I have to admit that I miss Scotland badly during this Lockdown. I live in Germany and as I habe friends in Scotland I come each year to visit them or come as a workaway. It's my second home. Mostly I arrive in Edinburgh or if not we mostly make it to an at least short visit on our way. Thank you for sharing. Lovely to watch your trips and hear your accent. Greetings from the west oft Germany
Welcome aboard! So glad you enjoy the videos! I'll be trying to get some more out soon but of course it's tricky just now. All the best to you in Germany - great country!
Not sure why I’m watching, I’ve done most of this run for the last 16 years lol. On a serious note , I’ve been to a few cities near and far, but Edinburgh does it for me, hence I moved here 16 years ago.
Great to see that tour round Morningside and Bruntsfield. I used to live in Morningside when o first moved to Scotland in 1995 right round the corner from the then Safeway, which is now Waitrose, changed days eh? I used to work in the SYHA hostel in Bruntsfield and would take some of the hostellers to the Golf Tavern for drinks. I also spent many an evening watching a late night movie in the Cameo and so glad to see it survived the pandemic in the end. My best memories though were during winter, seeing the reaction on the faces of some of the hostellers from warmer climes to seeing snow on the links (back in the day when there was snow in winter, lol). Ah happy days
Enjoyed this trip down memory lane, Steve. I was born and lived in Edinburgh (Morningside, Newington, Clerwood, and Craiglockhart) until 1986 and I recognised all the streets that you showed in your fascinating video. Like others who have commented, I was struck by the terrible state of the roads with their poor-quality patching. By the way, I enjoy all your videos!
What's your favourite city?
EDINBURGH
Edinburgh, Prague, and a shout out for Bristol, my home town.
Edinburgh.
Glasgow and Islamabad 🇵🇰💚🏴

I am so missing my family...my son, daughter in law and two wee grandsons. I'm stuck in New York but thank you for the ride. They're in Marchmont by the Links....I wanted to shout..."Stop! let me out...I'll walk from here!"
Haha 😆 awww I hope you can all get together again soon!
I met David Bowie walking after his Murray field serious moon light tour... Danube St. Wink wink. 17a.
@@steve-marsh Thanks Steve. They are actually with me in New York for the last 2 weeks. They're gong back on the 8th. You are very sweet.

The history and architecture 😮😮
Don't get to see anything like that in the states.
You really captured the beauty of your city.
❤
It’s truly an amazing city!!
Thanks Monica! :) It was a lovely day which certainly helps brighten up the buildings :)
I'm from Edinburgh it's full of junkies hahahaha haha
Great to get a free tour of Edinburgh without getting out of my room! 😁 Thanks!
Miss travelling around the world like it used to be

Hi Steve ... I know this is one of your earlier vlogs, but I have to say I enjoy exploring with you with no music tracks. That is just my preference. Makes your videos more 'real'. There's no sound track to real life. :)
as someone who is considering edinburgh uni this was very helpful!
Thank you! A great city to study, I'm sure you'll have a lovely time here, just don't expect the sky to always look like this :)
I prefer no music , and your voice is calming.

Thanks for the drive round Edinburgh. It brings back happy memories of living there in the eighties. Now I can’t wait to go back sometime!

correct steve, winter is the best for the the sunshine

I never seen so many parking spaces in Edinburgh
Haha so true!
Steve, your driving tour of Edinburgh, while interesting, makes it abundantly clear why you wisely chose to become a resident of Montrose. 👍
Thanks Steve. I enjoyed every minute of it. After 45 years I didn't recognize anything anymore.
Glad you enjoyed it Henk! :)
Thank you for the nice ride and not including any music and for including nice comments about the various locations.

And thanks so much for coming along for the journey :D
Thank you for the tour of this beautiful city…I hope to visit one day 🤗
The castle is so beautiful and I love exploring castles and the grounds.
Thanks for the tour Steve, It bought back some great memories of my 2nd visit to Edinburgh. It's the first time I've not seen any Road cones or Seagulls on the heads of any Statues around the Royal Mile..😅😅
I stayed in Morningside at my friends flat, so the Bus took the same route as you did into the New Town, then on the Train to Glasgow via Falkirk..❤
Thanks Steve. You drove past where my grandmother lived for many years on Bruntsfield Place (on your left at ~ 5:21 mark).
Cheers John, glad to have driven past a piece of family history :)
Amazing day in Edinburgh. Eerily quiet though . Morningside probably my favorite place l have stayed at 💙😱🏴
Wonderful tour! Took me past the house I was born in (Stockbridge), my mother-in-law's house and my aunt, both in Comely Bank, where I used to work in George Street and a whole lot more. Loved it. Been overseas for 50 years so this was a fabulous memory tour.
I'm so glad to bring you some fond family memories Angela! Thanks for getting in touch :)
Really enjoyed that Steve! I sat with my pocket street map open beside me and followed you around. Such a great city - I have missed visiting this year.
Cheers Sue, It was an odd route, but still fun!
This was such a fantastic ride around Edinburgh, Thanks so much Steve. Hopefully I'll get back someday. Cheers
Fantastic views of the city , and there actually was "sunshine on Leith " ! I need to visit the city again when we get back to normal .
Cheers Jon, I really should have burst into song on Leith :)
Thanks, mate, for the driving tour of Edinburgh. I have never been there, but lots of time in London. This tour reminds me of driving around the outer western suburbs of that enormous British city. --RB, Virginia, USA
Lovely. I have been to Edinburgh dozens of times and you showed me places I have not seen. Thank you for the memories and the new ones. Great video
Thanks so much Juanita! :)
Came home from work to find this wonderful video, beer in hand I sat and watched it all and was captivated by the clear day the wonderful sights and great commentary, thank you so much.
Cheers for coming along for the whole trip Simon! :)
Thanks so much Lori!
A delightful hour of much needed vicarious travel. THANKS!
Cheers Jerry! Thanks for coming along :)
Hehe me neither Sandra, I just hit one button and that pretty much worked for this video :)
& Derby now, still beautiful countryside, but back & knees a bit dodgy, so no marathons for me, only yours, they don’t hurt a bit! take care, and thank you for taking the time to reply, Happy Easter 🐣 what’s left of it!🤗👋
Thanks once again. Took me back when we visited home n 2011 🏴🇦🇺
Thanks for taking me along with you on this drive Steve. Appreciated your efforts immensely. One thing - Santa'd need to bring his number 1 game - all those chimney pots. Even be a sweeps nightmare!
Haha good point! 😆 cheers for coming along!
Wow! What a fantastic video. I've not been back home for a while but I surprised myself at how many places and streets I remembered. Love your channel Steve. All the best from Melbourne. ( I need a wee trip home now)
Wow snow living in the Aussie desert been many years since I saw or thrown snow 1973 Christmas I think in Castiel milk drive glasga
Why am I suddenly singing old Marillion and Fish songs in my head?
Haha love it Rob!
Wow, nice place to stay, well found! :)
Another excellent video Steve. Thanks very much. You've also brought me up to date on the new cycle lanes and tram works for when I'm back driving the buses :-)
Haha cheers Julian :)
1 min and 6 seconds, passed my flat from 25 years ago... love Edinburgh.
Haha awesome! Hey nice part of town :)
Loved this video. Spent my schooldays in Edinburgh so wonderful memories.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave and delighted to bring back some memories!
Mind the potholes. Excellent video.
Too true!
Great stuff Steve, happy memories. Thanks!
Cheers Marc!
It's so different for a Dutch guy too see you driving on the wrong way of the road....i wouldn't dare or try!
I was born and brought up in Edinburgh, this is bringing back so many memories, although it’s a shame some of the old buildings in St Andrew’s Sq. now have a modern facade.
Been in all these streets Steve can't say how much I enjoyed this car journey with you. Xx
Thanks Margaret :)
From a born & bred ex-Edinbugger, thanks for a great trip round my old haunts. :)
Really enjoyed watching this video, lived in Edinburgh all my life and even watching this video I am still learning new things and new places and routes to explore.
Thanks so much for watching! :)
Morningside and Stockbridge, my favourite charity shopping places❤️🏴❤️
Couldn't agree more :)
Love it, I planned a trip for this week, but... The virus😢
Another great video Steve. I was born in Edinburgh (Simpsons) but mainly brought up in Leith. Lived in Surrey now for 33 years but still have a great attachment to Auld Reekie. This was a wonderful nostalgic trip for me. 🙋♂️
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Glad you liked it Ruaraidh!
@@steve-marsh Enjoyed it so much, I just came back to watch it again!!
Hey great effort on the Royal Mile Colin! Aye, Milnes is an institution, many happy days and nights in there :)
Thanks so much for coming along Bobby! All the best to you, and I’ll be out there again soon!
@@steve-marsh thank you very much. All the best to you in Scotland. May traveling be possible again, soon. Take care
Very enjoyable. Another great 'day out' during lockdown, driving past streets and buildings I used to know. Thanks.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it!
Not sure why I’m watching, I’ve done most of this run for the last 16 years lol.
On a serious note , I’ve been to a few cities near and far, but Edinburgh does it for me, hence I moved here 16 years ago.
As soon as you hit Ann Street, a half dozen Audis, couple Rovers, some Mercs, nothing more than a couple years old.
For all those reasons, I love that part of town! :)
Beautiful blue sky in my favourite city. Good job.👍😊
Cheers! It was too nice a day not to turn the camera on :)
I just love your videos Steve. What a great drive round Edinburgh that was .
Thank you once again from me in Irvine 🤗🤗
Hey Grace in Irvine! I hope your weekend is going well :) Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it more than I enjoyed dodging those potholes! Seriously bad, and I don't see them getting fixed properly anytime soon!
