  • Join me for an epic walk around the spectacular city centre of Scotland's incredible capital: Edinburgh. On our 100th walk on this channel, we'll take in the sights of this marvellous city over the course of 80 minutes, walking from the New Town towards Edinburgh Castle, down The Royal Mile, past Greyfriars Bobby, up to St. Giles' Cathedral, and down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
    On our walk around Edinburgh, we pass a number of fascinating landmarks, including (deep breath): The Balmoral Hotel, Princes Street, Scott Monument, St. Andrew Square, George Street, Royal Scottish Academy, Princes Street Gardens, The Mound, Scottish National Gallery, The New College, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Tolbooth Kirk, Lady Stair's Close, Writers' Museum, Makars' Court, the Bank of Scotland, Victoria Street, West Bow, Grassmarket, The Wee Pub, Covenanters' Memorial, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Candlemakers' Row, Greyfriars Kirk, Greyfriars Bobby, The Elephant House, National Museum of Scotland, The Old College, Tron Kirk, St. Giles' Cathedral, The News Steps, Cockburn Street, Canongate, John Knox House, Canongate Tolbooth, Canongate Kirk, Scottish Parliament Building, Arthur's Seat and The Palace of Holyroodhouse.

I'm so looking forward to my next visit to Scotland, as my roots go allll the way back to King Malcolm Canmore and Queen/St. Margaret in fabulous-beautiful-historic Edinburgh. Does anybody else remember the Waverley Market (changed to the Princes Mall and is now called Waverley mall) in the 80's and early 90's? It was beautiful, had a big water feature and art sculptures in the center, full of lots of interesting and unique shops and bars down on the bottom level. There was even a guy playing a piano at one point if I remember right. They took the water feature out and tiled over everything in the 90's to cram in lots of fast food places and a sea of plastic chairs, all the interesting shops started to leave as high street shopping went into decline. To me it symbolizes more than any other place the decline of the shopping mall as not only a place to shop but a place to gather and socialize.

    It's been a long time since I was there - 1991. I'm glad to see Deacon Brodie's Tavern is still there. When I was there, the rugby world cup was on, and I nipped into the pub for a cold one. There were two guys sitting at the bar watching a game on TV. Being Canadian, I knew nothing about the game, but they took the time to fill me in on what was happening. I spent a couple of days there, touring the city.
    As for the Burns link, on that same trip, I was searching out some family ghosts in Dumfries, and found out that's were Burns died. He was an exciseman there. There's a pub called The Old Globe Inn where he drank. They have a chair with a bronze plaque on it saying "The Poet's Chair". I visited his final resting spot in the graveyard. It's amazing to think how much work these people put out at such an early age. Burns died at 37.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fascinating to hear all that from you! The city must have been full of life during the Rugby World Cup - and you can always find a friendly face or two to watch a match with in the pubs of Edinburgh!
      I've never been to Dumfries before - so I think that'll have to be a future walk with the fascinating history you've just told us about, that's quite the knowledge you have of Burns' later years! It is amazing as you say how much of an impact these men had in such short lives - Robert Fergusson only lived until he was 24!
      Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed this walk around Edinburgh, it's always lovely to hear your thoughts on different towns and cities around the country :)

    Beautiful city, wonderful place, oozing with history, Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard it all before. But wait. In the case of Edinburgh it's absolutely true. So much to see and do. You have to go back many times to scratch the surface of this magnificent City. I've been coming here on and off since I was 11 and I'm now 63. I come up to Scotland from Manchester about twice a year and will do so until I am no longer able.A great place with a great capital city.

    Super informative, having the text on the screen may not be for everyone but it helps me (I just pause and read) instead of missing what the guide may have said. I was actually in Edinburgh in 2017 and wish (although its not possible of course) that I had something like this video before I went, instead of just aimlessly wandering which is what we did.

      lol you obviously have never lived there. It's dirty, smelly, scruffy, nothing gets fixed, the government abuses the city locals - that's the facts, no offense, just wanted to tell the truth.
      Locals can't even get emergency ambulances, they are told to get a taxi to hospital. Yeah Edinburgh sure is beautiful.

    I remember the first time I heard bagpipes as a child, there was a local parade a few streets over. I asked my Mom, what is that? She explained and asked, do you like it? I love it, I said, and still do. The pipes are really a pan-European instrument, they’re played even in Greece, where my father is from. But my drop of Scottish blood (1/16, 1/32?, never can remember, but there is a Stewart there somewhere, not the royal one, I’m sure) still stirs whenever I hear them.

    Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this glorious epic walk ! As a child I red a lots about the tumultuous fight between Scotland and England, I've been watching so many movies and documentaries, about Grand Britain's history, but never had so many precious information. My whole life I've been fascinated about Edinburgh, and hopefully, I April, i booked a week in Scotland, and my driving will come through ! Without intending to say something wrong, I have 2 things to mention: The bagpipes was used in Tracia (Dacia) ,actually Romania, from thousands of years, and are still available, and second :I was to concentrate on my writing, and I couldn't admire the fabulous scenery. Anyway, I'll watch again ,concentrating on the beautiful video. Thanks again and congratulations 👏
