great videos Sam. years ago when i was sailing with my dad, he found a neat invention to "calm" a boat down at anchor. we'd anchored at Catalina Island off of California and the surge rocked the boat pretty hard. so before the next time we went, he rigged up a couple of car oil catch pans with some lead weights, drilled a few holes around the sides and rigged them together with medium sized line. he tied the boom off at 90 degree angle to the mast and suspended the two rigged oil pans off the end of the boom. the drag from the oil pans acted as a brake when the swells rocked the boat. the thing smoothed out the motion of the boat and made for a really comfortable nights sleep.
Crazy how the ocean can be smooth as glass to shit conditions with wind and waves. If it were easy, we’d all be doing it. My hat’s off to you, Sam, well done!
Well done! Congratulations. If you have more boat speed, attach a bigger lure to attract bigger fish. The small fish can't reach a small lure at higher speeds, the bigger fish are not interested in small lures. Have fun!

I liked the details of your trip, such as your life inside the yacht, eating meals and preparing them, and fishing. We lived with you another special atmosphere.. My observation is that we want to install the camera on the boat and not just hold it in your hand.. I mean, photography is a little better.. Thank you

Back in my early sixties I took up sailing with the goal of sailing solo from Canada to Greece when pensioned off. I learned to sail and sailed the Great Lakes for a few years always remembering Melville's quote, that a Great Lakes sailor has nothing to be ashamed of in comparison to an ocean sailor. Unfortunately, I never realized my dream, but at least I have my memories of sunsets on Huron and a couple of tornadoes on Erie. I am in my eighties now, sold my boat a few years ago, but I still am young at heart thanks to my sailing years. It was a great pleasure "sailing" with you to Horta. May you always have the good winds and my God be with you on the waters................

Have fun!
Sam you make us smile huge every time we watch you.. Love your positivity!
Your positivity is inspirational
This was more entertaining than a 3 hour movie.
not really
I am so happy for you that you caught a fish for your birthday!! Awesome!!
Congrats, Sam. That's another huge accomplishment. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much!
Wow, sailing with dolphins is such a privilege!
I follow many channels to sail around the world, but your channel was very special and we lived with you moment by moment on board the yacht. I liked the details of your trip, such as your life inside the yacht, eating meals and preparing them, and fishing. We lived with you another special atmosphere.. My observation is that we want to install the camera on the boat and not just hold it in your hand.. I mean, photography is a little better.. Thank you
Jesus Christ the sovereign God loves you my friend 😊
Are you serious ??? Dude plays piano like a pro !!! You got new subscriber, likes and anything else on all you vids man !!! 😯
I can imagine the frustration of sailing into high pressure and zero winds and finally reaching the destination to find you have to stay afloat for a few more days due to silly red tape. What a great find this channel was.
BEST SAILING CHANNEL OF ALL TIME.
What a great video! So glad you're out there living life instead of being trapped in a cubicle like me. Good on you, man! 👍
If you don't mind me asking what held you back? age?
I ask because I'm 40yo with a bit of a bad back and worried I won't be able to do it at 50yo
Crossing the Atlantic and catch and cook, couldn’t get better
Living the life my man!! Keep enjoying it the way you are!! Happy Birthday!
It be awesome to see the Map Route from Bermuda to Horta! A picture of the GPS route! With speed and time data!
Sam - Please don't ever change. You're an inspired person and the world could use more people like you! Love watching these videos.
It’s so crazy how calm the ocean can be. It looked like a swimming pool
The golf stream some time is so calm that you can see de difference between the calmer water and the one that move , like a river through the ocean , it's like navigating in a sea of oil
One word - “Inspirational”
"A fish is basically a vegetable." Ron Swanson. Amazing trip and footage!
rubbish. name a veg that bleeds.
@@7494jon you might have missed the joke.
Happy birthday! It is amazing how you manage to always smile. Good luck to you, sailor!
Man you’re really living life the way it’s meant to be lived my friend. Simple and FREE! One day I will do the same
Always in a very good mood that helps a lot on the passage like that
Good thing you put that bigger fuel tank in!!
Godspeed buddy. You’re doing great.
Happy Birthday! One of the few true wild men of this world. Youve inspired me again to try to cast my bow lines and do this myself. Keep it up, you have people behind you.
Sam your amazing! Ive been watching you for 18 months, you got me through Covid. Nobody ever though this passage was going to be easy, but you just smile and turn your face to the wind and keep the positive attitude, we should all learn something from Sam’s can do attitude. Life is too short to pass on opportunities like this. The fish looks amazing and not a bad haircut on a moving boat! Rob
You are a legend, with all of your amazing talents. Your family must be terrified when you set out on one of these epic long journeys.
I’m literally looking at boats. I need to live my life and this reminded me of that. Thank you.
The dolphins had to really slow down to hangout with you, they where literally doing circles around you ha ha thanks for taking us along
Even when he’s frowning, he is smiling
I really enjoy the fact that your sailing videos actually show you sailing! So many of the TH-cam sailing videos show about a minute of sailing and rest of the time is spent watching them in port, working on their boat or walking around the city. Keep up the good work, please!
No matter how confident you are it's gotta be relieving to see other ships when you're alone out there.
You are my soul brother, your ingenuity rigging those fishing lines were awesome, I grew up fishing and boating just never got into sailing. This is the most unique experience you can have, back to the olden days. Love it. Glad you caught a bonita/false albacore and a mahi mahi.
You can replace the brains of the tiller pilot with pypilot and a $25 computer (raspberry pi)
It's amazing how calm the ocean gets.
The doldrums are a trip. People have disagreed with me but I think the Atlantic is the worst. It gets so windless.
It's a damn tragedy this channel doesn't have a million subscribers.
Yes, but we get the benefit of fewer ads. Soon enough we will pay the price for the channel’s success.
@@ianritchie1666 he deserves it
@@ianritchie1666 so easy to skip ads, but who cares if he has millions of subs sometimes they do less ads depends on what they chose.
Sam, you are the MAN. Solo crossing the Atlantic ain't a small achievement by any stretch of imagination. Congratulations and thank you for a beautiful videos that you make.
I really enjoyed the trip. I know very little about sailing but learned a few things on this trip. Thanks for taking us along.
You’re a legend bro.
Thanks for sharing this. I must have been a sailor in a past life because I love boating and sailing videos but I get terribly sea sick... I do however get to sail the world over with videos like this and get to experience in a small way your journey. Namaste'.
Absolutely mesmerizing shots of the becalmed ocean as it was at times difficult to discern the horizon separating sea and sky. What a majestic experience.
The dolphins too. Just you and the dolphins on an endless blue ocean. Remarkable.

Always fun to watch the Sam Holmes show sailing a too-small boat across a very big ocean. I had no idea you were such a skilled musician as well as epic adventurer. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Cheers!
I'm trying to figure out why I'm addicted to this channel. Me thinks it's because someone knows how to document with zero agenda. This cannel is pure.
This has been the best of youtube …. Best of all time. Just a fact
Hey, write your own book. You are inspiring to many of us. A book would be a fun project for you to do in this open time.
Maybe one day!
@@samholmessailing Check out free range sailing. The guy on there is a master fisherman from a sailboat with lots of tips. So good to see your new video! I really enjoy watching you and have a place not far from Oriental.
I sailed up from Cuba to Bermuda and on to the UK in 2010. One of my memories of the sail to Bermuda is the man of war’s on the surface. I assumed it was a one off because they went on for days! Brought it all back for me!
Of all the sailing channels I enjoy yours the most. I can’t figure out why….
Regardless of what anyone of us is up against or trying to do in our lives, you are a wonderful rudder of perspective. Thank you.
I am really getting hungry watching you cook up and eat the fresh fish. Enjoy.
Man, your story is so “real” thanks Sam. I know you are to shore, and safe but that just relieves the anxiety for me. Thanks, it is super nice, really appreciate it.
Talk about someone living the dream; my hats off to you Sam!!
First saw you on James' channel, then the algorithm brought your channel. Hats off to both of you.
Thank you for these videos. You bring life at sea to life for the viewers who can only wonder and wish. You are among the "awesomes" of our world. Safe travels to you always!
really really amazing, just an advice: first you boil water and only after you add pasta :-)
