While contraversial, i think Tiny's new design gives her an identity thats markedly different than Dixie, instead of being just... Dixie 2.0. As she was in DK64, she could have very well just been Dixie, and I think her new design makes her stand out as her own character for better or worse
Honestly I think something to at least make Tiny stand out from Dixie is the fact that canonically she’s a child genius, if they played into that a bit more making her sort of a sidekick for Funky you would’ve had something interesting
2:48 wasn’t cancelled to focus on something for the Wii. Donkey Kong Racing was cancelled because Rare (who was the one working on it) got bought by Microsoft, so Rare reworked it into Saberman Stampede which also ended up getting cancelled, sadly.
The Saberman rework was also going to be incredibly different. Rather than a racing game, it was essentially going to be GTA with animals, as you would explore an open world and capture animals to use as mounts.
I don't know why it happened but it wasn't Nintendo doing it to replace banjo and it wasn't rare doing it to replace banjo. Nintendo did it for some reason that we don't understand
Personally, I feel bad for Wrinkly Kong. She was nothing but kindhearted, but she was abandoned by her husband Cranky, who she asked Dixie & Kiddy to tell to come home, & then she passed away between DKC3 & DK64, & only became playable as a GHOST in Barrel Blast. & the unlock condition? It's to have DK let her win a race. At least she got to play SM64 & hang out around the N64 with her family in her life. Still, neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!

Since Tiny was my favorite kong in DK64 I was honestly really excited when I saw Diddy Kong Racing DS announced, and to see that she had an updated design. I can definitely understand the contention due to her and Dixie replacing Banjo and Conker, but honestly I think both Diddy Kong titles stand on their own right as something really memorable.

Tiny Kong’s redesign grew on me after being a Sluggers addict admittedly. She’s not a particularly good character but some of her animations like when she gets MVP are kinda interesting? They definitely kept her as the sassy cool kong even if her newer design is more reminiscent of Candy

So I have had experience with some of these games that you mentioned funny enough. I have all three GBA versions of the DKC trilogy. I was surprised to see Tiny made a cameo in both DKC2 & DKC3. And of course Lanky & Chunky too in the Funky DKC3 minigame. I also have Mario super sluggers on my Wii U. I was so happy to see Tiny, K. Rool, Kritters, Funky, Dixie, Diddy, Baby DK AND DK. The DK universe definitely got some good representation in that game even though Lanky & Chunky were still missing. Finally Chunky’s appearance in the Mario movie really caught me off guard. I was so happy to see the big guy. Even though Tiny’s redesign is definitely controversial. It’s not the worst thing. At least she’s appeared in several games during the 2000s. I do still miss her original design though. As far as Barrel Blast & Diddy Kong Racing DS. I didn’t know those two games existed for the longest time. Also, they butchered the DK rap in Smash 4/Smash ultimate. Lanky & Chunky’s sections are GONE. Like what the hell Nintendo? Don’t ever listen to that version. It’s garbage. I'm still torn about Tiny's new design. On one hand, the revised design makes her stand out more from Dixie and less like a copy. On the other hand, it doesn't make much sense that she's suddenly so tall.
Personally, I think part of the reason Tiny received her new redesign is because, in Japan, Tiny Kong was never mentioned to be Dixie's little sister, so Nintendo of Japan likely saw it fit to redesign her to make her stand out a bit more from Dixie. (and also to fill in Banjo's slot, like you said) As an additional note, Tiny and Dixie's relationship is never mentioned again after her redesign, so them being sisters seems to have been quietly retconned.
It's probably cause i don't have Rare era nostalgia but I do prefer Tiny's newer look. Guess cause it was my first exposure to her as a kid. She's more distinct and I like the outfit style more, besides she still has the rambunctious sassy personality through it all.
Knowing now that DKR was Tiny's first appearance with her new look, they probably changed her look to more distinct from Dixie. That's my cope so I don't have to imagine why else they would do that 😅
If there’s ever a new DK game (2D or 3D), I honestly wouldn’t mind Chunky having a more passive roll akin to Big The Cat in the most recent Sonic titles. As for Lanky, I could easily see a new move-set of his be similar to Ristar or The Werehog’s platforming, stretching his arms to swing around on poles and grabbing enemies from afar.

I never read the manual or players guides for DK64, but I've heard some people say the Tiny redesign is more in line with her character. For me though, I always saw her personality as a bit more tomboyish and active. Seeing her go through puberty and get boobs kinda threw me for one 🤣

The large roster of recent Mario spinoffs feel like missed opportunities to bring back these characters. Between Pirahna Plant, Blooper, Goomba and other enemies getting the spotlight, it feels like that spot could have easily been filled by beloved DK character. I'm just sayin' that it seems to show how pushed aside DK's friends are when it took several DLC packs just for Diddy and Funky to be a part of Kart 8 Deluxe.

Knowing now that DKR was Tiny's first appearance with her new look, they probably changed her look to more distinct from Dixie. That's my cope so I don't have to imagine why else they would do that 😅

If there’s ever a new DK game (2D or 3D), I honestly wouldn’t mind Chunky having a more passive roll akin to Big The Cat in the most recent Sonic titles. As for Lanky, I could easily see a new move-set of his be similar to Ristar or The Werehog’s platforming, stretching his arms to swing around on poles and grabbing enemies from afar.

I didn’t know the change to Tiny was a design change. I honestly thought that it was just Tiny, but older, like she got a growth spurt in comparison to Dixie and Diddy still being small. I can understand why some may not like it, but I think it’s okay. If they ever remake DK 64, it would be interesting to see if the use her new design or old design. Or…..use her new design, but when she uses Mini Monkey, she becomes her old design, which would be funny.
Also Chunky is best Kong. He’s just so goofy, especially in the tag barrel, where he is waving hands like “Oh pick me!” But then when you get to him he’s like “Wait, no no no don’t pick! Uh….um *looks around* pick Tiny, yeah she’d liked to get picked.” Lol
Yeah, seems like there's a handful of different theories to Tiny's redesign. Who knows. It's just a change we weren't ready for, right?

I never read the manual or players guides for DK64, but I've heard some people say the Tiny redesign is more in line with her character.
For me though, I always saw her personality as a bit more tomboyish and active. Seeing her go through puberty and get boobs kinda threw me for one 🤣

This video is a nice contrast between this and MistareFusion's anti DK64 thesis where he complained about Dixie and Kiddy being subbed out for their siblings. I feel like Kiddy needed to be replaced by someone older and bigger to contrast him with Donkey Kong. Dixie though I see where he's coming from.

I would love to see Donkey Kong 64 to the Switch. Either as a part of the N64 games or as a full HD remake. But I guess that none of them will make an appearance because of pointless bullshit reasons. (sigh)

The large roster of recent Mario spinoffs feel like missed opportunities to bring back these characters. Between Pirahna Plant, Blooper, Goomba and other enemies getting the spotlight, it feels like that spot could have easily been filled by beloved DK character. I'm just sayin' that it seems to show how pushed aside DK's friends are when it took several DLC packs just for Diddy and Funky to be a part of Kart 8 Deluxe.
SERIOUSLY! It's mind blowing. I'm pretty annoyed by MK8's character roster. All these baby characters feel super pointless. It should not have taken this long for Diddy and Funky to arrive.
