Even tho Jungle Japes is sort of a tutorial level, I think that it's one of my favorite levels juste cuz when you enter it you know it means that a great adventure is starting! Also, its one of the levels I played the most as a kid (cuz I sucked)

I played through this on my iphone and, despite growing up with red and blue and playing pokemon for fucking 27 years, this was actually the best pokemon game i ever played and, after my first playthrough of red, also my best pokemon experience. I never thought that i would ever truly enjoy a pokemon journey as an adult again but this made the magic happen.

Its a really solid game with some glaring weaknesses. I love it but it always makes me a bit sad how much potential was missed. Wish it was another masterpiece like Banjo Kazooie.

Great take on the worlds! I only disagree with you on Angry Aztec but that is mostly due to not liking bland yellow sandy desert aesthetic. The actual content of AA is not bad per se, but it looks garish to me and I loathe being there more than anywhere else. Gobi's Valley of BK and Shifting Sand Land of M64 are my least favorite forays of those respective games for much the same reason. AA does suffer more than most from the dreaded hallway syndrome present throughout this game. I find it hilarious Crystal Caves actually has less hallway syndrome than Angry Aztec. It is also our introduction to Scuttlebug who is either a cinch or the bane of my existence depending on the day. Diddy's jet pack and the respective Feed me/GET OUT! elements are nice touches. Candy Kong bothers me as an adult. A bit weird to have a pin up character in a "children's" game but this game has worse fouls than that. Creepy Castle is clearly the pinnacle of the game (which is a horror game mind you so this makes perfect sense) and I completely agree Frantic Factory and Fungi Forest closely trail behind in quality. They nailed Creepy Castle and similar to Banjo Kazooie with Click Clock Wood, we are given an wonderfully satisfying conclusion to the game. We are treated to the game's finest set piece in my eyes being DK's pinnacle of the SERIES cart ride with the chase by Kackle. This along with the ballroom set piece with Diddy lighting the candles for Kuh Rool's phantom party brought so much depth to the world. King Kut Out, or DK's Phantom Ganon, is an upper tier boss considering Army dillo and Dogadon are fairly lame retreads... I'd say third to the King himself and Mad Jack. The bananas trail better than anywhere else making back tracking a non-issue. If they put the care into theming the worlds as intricately as Creepy Castle throughout this title would easily be in conversation for the greatest platformer of all time. As is I don't think any game has come close to its funky feel and attitude plus the richness of expression from the characters has never been nearly expressed. This game has so much character in a landscape that needs it sorely. Love your work. Mad Jack should be number 1 🔥🔥🔥

I dislike the Factory. I'd rather swim around in Gloomy Galleon than deal with trying to climb the machine in the middle of the Factory and deal with that awful Jack in the Box boss fight.

Lankey's real boss is the beetle and the rabbit. Very sad he doesn't get a true fight that utilizes his abilities. He has so many.

Kinda funny, Creepy castle is one of my least favorite DUE to the Linear path.

I still think it's a good game and play it from time to time.

Mad Jack was the boss who would always scare 😱 😨 😳 me as a kid, lol. Even looking at him now, he still scares me but not as bad as an adult.

DK64 is simply incredible, I had fun from start to finish, playing on the console itself it offers the perfect challenges, I achieved 101% in less than 6 hours (which shows that it's not as massive as they say) but playing on the emulator the timer it becomes unregulated and the difficulty increases significantly. Anyway, I wish this game was even bigger, or there was a sequel still in 64 made by that Rare. Better than Mario 64 without a doubt and even better than Banjo, precisely because it has more characters, is more charismatic and is longer, as both games are very similar. I don't know where this crying started, at the time the game had an average of 90 points and was the game of the year for many magazines.

You hint at it a bunch of times when you say "we aren't gonna talk about that golden banana". But I'm gonna say it. All the racing challenges in DK64 are terrible.

8. Fungi forest. This one seems to have the most unecessary and arbitrary gates littered around for no reason. So many times i go to do something and i have to go back to change kong or the time of day. Frustrating. 7. Gloomy galleon. Self explanatory. 6. Kreepy Kastle. From here onwards i like all of the levels and its tough to decide. This level has TWO max level beaver bother minigames for some reason. Unacceptable. Love the boss and theme though. 5. Crystal Caves. Slightly weaker design and far weaker boss than kastle but overall much better challenges and i like to explore it. 4. Angry Aztec. Im honestly suprised by this placement but i just find it less fun than everything remaining. Great level. 3. Hideout Helm. Inflitrating the big bad lair with your fully decked out team great. Good challenges. Good reward for blueprints. This would be lower if i included the two coins here because getting them is rough. 2. JungleJapes. This level actually has the charm and fun you mentioned for forest. It feels super home-y and Rambi is sick. Great saving your first kong and is great to come back to with all 5 later. As good as first levels get. 1. Frantic Factory. Also self explanatory.

I think if they literally don't make anything color/Kong-coded (bananas, Golden Bananas, blueprints, etc) it nullifies the majority of complaints with this game. Maybe even the music pads should just be a generic music pad usable by any Kong and you just have to figure it out yourself: in essence, the game should not make you use a specific Kong unless you absolutely have to. I have my theories there's a decent chance Nintendo could be remaking this game. It's mysteriously not on the NSO service (even though Banjo is [much like Mario RPG was never added to the service cause it was being remade]) and years ago there was a credible leak the Mario Odyssey team was working on a DK game. Shortly before that were rumors of Mario RPG being remade...

Eh, I kinda wish the video was more about just what DK64 does right instead of arbitrary comparisons to Mario 64 and Banjo lol.

Something that dawned on me from this video and the comments is I wonder why this game has such a dark and gloomy vibe to it. Like you can just see by skimming through the video. Everything is dark, rainy, inside a dark building or cave, etc. I mean, shoutout to Fungi Forest's day/night system, but Angry Aztec is like the only unique level aesthetically and it's not even that great. I am a Crystal Caves enjoyer but yeah, the falling icicles and confusing layout hurt it.

I was a light-hearted kid so I dont like the scary level. But I gotta play the game again to see how I feel now. I like when the music is snazzy and not gloomy. My favorite level is the mushroom day night level. I love the garden feel

I'm with you on the decision of the top 3 boss fights. I remember having a tough time beating him at first, and I always had fun fighting against the factory boss. I'd always go for jumping on his last platform repeatedly. Like we were playing a game inside a game

Same here dude! mad jack is NOT EVEN CLOSE to the HARDEST TOUGHEST BOSS in the game! For me it's Dodagon 2 CHUNKY FOREST BOSS because you're GUARANTEED TO TAKE DAMAGE with the super FIRE WALL BLOW ATTACK if you don't know how to edgeguard with Chunky(to avoid it, simply walk down to the ledge & hang there till the fire wall blows past you)! Then the 2nd part of that fight, YOU MUST KILL THE TEETEEFLY IN TIME otherwise you'll be melted by magma!! That's about 4 rounds max! So if you can't kill him in 4 rounds, then you're dead! That's even harder than the final KO King Rool fight! So from HARDEST to EASIEST it's 1. Chunky TEETEE FLY 2--Self explanatory cuz that's INSTANT DEATH!! 2. KING ROOL(final battle) 3. Pufferfish(Galleon), I think it's hard because if you don't know how to control the galleon/boat well, then you'll get damaged mostly by the fireballs or shockwaves!! & also the DK rings get SMALLER & SMALLER after each electric current damage & the arena is DARK to see too. Plus this is a RACE AGAINST TIME just as Chunky's teetee fly battle except it's NOT INSTANT DEATH! 4. mad jack, the only trick is the ponytail twirl over & over again but not hard to damage the boss & there's no time limit to kill it unlike the teetee fly! 5. King Kut out aka(for me only) AHHHAHHH CH FEI DIAO!! His weird noises I still remember from my teenage years)))))) I even tried to imitate his voice like when he suddenly appears, he screams HUU HEHEHEH AH HER HER :) :DDDD It's funny as hell but still easy to kill! 6. Armadillo 2, still easy as fk! At 1st when I fought him, I thought, GREAT, I gotta hit him at least 6 times before he died! & possibly have at least 3 HOMING MISSILES aiming at DK during his turn to attack, but NO!!! The developer was too lazy & made him a pathetic easy piece of crap! 7. teetee fly 1 8. Armadillo 1

This is my second favorite plataformer game of N64. I don't understand why the people hate him.

For me: F-ANGRY AZTEC☹️, I hate the sandstorms constantly blowing sand in the monkeys/kongs faces(( D-Creepy Castle, Hideout Helm + that Creepy arse Frantic Factory! Always too DARK TO SEE sometimes! C-Jungle Japes+ Gloomy Galleon! Too many beavers in the 1st, Water levels for me isn’t bad! B-NONE!! A-FUIGI FOREST-LUIGI LUREST(mushroom 🍄 DAI FOREST)! Day & Night lovely!! Most 🍌 are at NIGHT NOT DAY! S-ma favourite CRYSTAL CAVES!!!! I love this place because of the lovely beautiful CRYSTALS & can always monkeyport to the top to KILL THE KOSHA to stop the stalagmites from falling!! also that 3RD MELON from candy!! That’s important!!!

Best Level Frantic Factory Worst Level Gloomy Galleon

This game is as much a masterpiece as Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. DK64 (alongside SM64, TLOZ:OOT, Star Fox 64, and GoldenEye) was in my top 5 most played N64 games. I 101 percented it many times before the internet, although with the help of the strategy guide lol. I never got the criticism that there’s too much in it. There’s 201 golden bananas in the game, but you only need 100 at the minimum to beat the game. The blueprints that give the maximum 50 minutes for the last level are not that difficult to obtain, and obtaining them contribute to 35 golden bananas. Also you don’t need all of them to beat the game, if you obtain enough to get at least 35-40 minutes worth of time, you can beat hideout helm. The one criticism that I agree with the most is that beating the original DK with one life twice and get a certain amount of points in Jetpac can be a bit much. However I will admit that I got incredibly good at those games because of DK64 lol. Each world in the game is so fun to explore and exploring them 5 times with the different kongs in different ways I always thought was one of the games strengths and not a weakness. The music for each level is incredibly immersive. Anyway I could say a lot more about why I love this game, but I’ll stop right here lol.

I will never understand why people didn’t like this game. This will forever be one of my favorites.

The only thing I wish that you gave a brief mention to the levels that had bosses like I think it's the last level you mentioned that's my favorite if I remember correctly it had a creepy boss where you have to I believe play as Lanky Kong with a cut out cardboard image of King K Rool the noicez it made and fighting that boss at night always creeped me out and I lived it. But otherwise great video.

I only like dk64 with the tag anywhere mod on emulator. Cant play it without it. I also dont understand the backtracking comparison how are they the same. Sure in banjo levels you have to find bottles to learn new moves before getting some collectables but the only two levels that require backtracking are goobys valley and freezeeasy peak every other level can be gotton 100% on first visit. Dk 64 has you backtrack to the first couple worlds and has you constantly backtracking to a tag barrel because they are color codded. Some hallways require you to go back and forth up to 4 times but in banjo if you have all the moves unlocked for the given level which are about three you can do the associated challenge once and be done they are not even in the same ballpark. Hard disagree on backtracking. Banjo only has a couple of instances of it but in dk64 it is throughout the entire game. Dont agree at all that they are on the same level. I only play it with tag anywhere as the backtracking is tedious. Thats my only major problem with the game. Dk64 goes from not very good to great with the tag anywhere on emulator. Great video though.

I'd personally move Frantic Factory up to the top tier, right alongside Creepy Castle. Dang, now I really want to replay this game.

I was down to the last yellow frog when my parents reset the whole computer. Lost everything, and this was after playing it through for the second time after a previous reset. I’ll still claim bragging rights haha.

This is my second fave N64 Game (first being Majora's Mask) but one of the few games I've come back to beat multiple times over. Just beat it today for the nostalgia since I finally bought my own copy back in March ^.^ Grew up watching my brother play this game. It came bundled with the jungle green edition N64 he got for his birthday/ Christmas back in the day so I often associate it with winter. Man does it bring me back each time T_T

I personally understand some of the complaints about DK 64, but I still view it as a masterpiece for the time period. FWIW I also love SM 64 and Banjo Kazooie, and even Banjo Tooie to be 100% honest. Never got into Zelda, but I'm a big fan of collect a thons (obviously) so I might like it if I tried it.
