@superjoebros64 I'm with you on the Orangsprint though. Fun ability that was given annoying missions (two of which involve characters laughing in your face when you don't beat them in a race)
The most annoying thing about Homing Ammo is when you're trying to pop a Banana Balloon and the homing shots are like "Nah gotta *KILL* this Zinger first!"
While I get this is for the vanilla game, I've played a Randomizer of the game many times now, and you can quickly get an understanding of how much content is locked behind certain abilities that you take for granted. It definitely gets you to appreciate many abilities in the game and see which ones aren't helpful in the slightest.
Good list, but IMO barrel blast and its associated levels are some of the most iconic DK moments, I couldn't get enough of it. The first person perspective was a perfect way to adapt this mechanic from the 2D games too.
Great Video! just loved the fact at 18:27 that u "spoiled" the last ability because of an mistake - but that's totally fine and easily overlooked! You also have a great voice man, keep it up
oooooooh. yeah 😅 I accidentally went out of order in the video clip. And re-organizing the voice over wouldn't have worked. Fixing it would have been a pain and wouldn't have been worth it. I totally forgot about this, nice catch haha. Appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed!
While a lot of these moves are pretty lackluster, the ones that really work pull a lot of weight. I personally think Rocket Barrel controls alright once you get the hang of it and figure out hovering with Z, and Pony Tail Twirl is an awesome move. Lots of duds and missed opportunities, but there are some diamonds for sure!
@superjoebros64 Makes sense. It's usable to all kongs, it's strong, and while it does require charging, you can move while charging. And it gets you rainbow coins. And very helpful for getting the crowns. The only downside is that it costs a crystal every time.... Which is not bad.
Great list! I'd just say Hunky Chunky is an easy S tier. As a kid, you just felt almighty as soon as you went that big and on unclimbable trees 💪 But it's your list so why not :-D
12:54 "Why split this up into three?" I have one reason to separate the Super Duper Simian Slam from the first two: its delayed animation for Diddy, Lanky, and Tiny. (Donkey Kong and Chunky don't really slow down.) I bring this up because in Crystal Caves, one of Lanky's Golden Banana is basically a Ground-Pound minigame with the ghost in the ice castle. Trying to beat that ghost with Super Duper Simian Slam was so difficult, that I thought I locked myself out of that Golden Banana; I swore to always get that banana before upgrading to Super Duper.
For me Tiny and Lanky were my go-to Kongs to explore. Lanky with his orangutan stand always seemed to be so much faster so i would place it on A or S. Tiny with her twirl was also invaluable.
You actually don't need the Rocketbarrel in Diddy's cabin challenge where you have to clear out the enemies for a GB. I just load up on oranges and jump on the ledges beside the corner platform in the room to get up and just use the oranges to clear out the middle platform, jump to it and take out the rest of the enemies that way so it saves the crystal coconuts.
It's weird how the kongs guns deal different damage. I mean at face value it's understandable that a peanut hits softer than a coconut but man do I love maining chunky's pineapple blaster. That thing is brutal
If you stand at the edge of an instrument pad while also touching the ground and play the instrument, it doesn’t take away one headphone but still kills all the enemies around you!
Creative, yes, but when it takes you to one of the most demanding instances of Beaver Bother in the game... Also, Squawks has to teach you the Orangstand Sprint right as you exit the barrel. Which would be fine if his talking stopped time, but unless that's a difference between emulation -- which the Let's Player I watched used -- and original hardware, the Beetle gets to keep going while you're forced to stand still, and I assume the same would be true of the Rabbit. I remember seeing a place in Fungi Forest where you needed a higher-tier switch to get inside, but once you are inside, there was a lower-tier switch. Also, I saw circumstances where the homing was actively detrimental. Like where you're trying to hit a Banana Balloon, but it homes in on a nearby enemy on the other side of the wall. (It was a Kasplat in Fungi Forest. The player just had to go around and kill the Kapslat, but still.) Even worse, another Banana Balloon is the target, but the ammo homes in on a switch. An already-pressed switch, so it doesn't even need to be pressed again. So yeah, you kind of just have to waste all your remaining homing ammo if you want that balloon. I thought it was a solution to an existing hardware limitation, but I got that from that same LPer I've been referencing, so we could be wrong. Still, the Silent Hill fog this is not.
I felt that…while watching the video. I’m sorry, I had to. 😂 You are not the only one to have that situation happen in Crystal caves with Lanky and the baboon balloon to get a measly 15 blue bananas. I’ve had that happen several times and I get so damn frustrated. I definitely know your pain. Also, I love the orangstand sprint, even if it’s kind of underwhelming. Also, I always spam the instruments because it’s so fun to destroy every enemy in the room. So damn fun to use. 😂
I wish the base orangstand was faster much like talon trot. Would really cement him as a true hidden speedster or let him walk across some walls like he does in the krool cutscene. Or maybe give the wall walking to the barrel version, idk.
Diddy Kong is the only Kong who has the ability to perform a SM64-style double jump (as in, jump twice in a row to go higher, not a midair one). I wish that got used more often, and maybe was an official Cranky-obtained ability.
Good video! Yeah, Tiny's Ponytail Twirl is such a great movement option. Easily the best ability! I feel like Rare kind of just threw a bunch of abilities at the wall to see what stuck. A lot of abilities just act as a "key" to solve a challenge and aren't really fun to use outside of a specific challenge. If the Kongs got more abilities that helped them traverse the world easier (like many of the ones in Banjo-Kazooie did), I think it would have benefitted the game more. Many of the abilities in Donkey Kong 64 just feel underwhelming (Did Donkey Kong really need a potion just to grab levers? 😅). If they wanted to add more abilities, maybe bring back a few more Animal Buddies with fun abilities instead? It just feels like they added one too many gratuitous abilities for each of the Kongs.
I totally feel this! It's tough coming up with a unique variety of abilities for 5 Kongs. And needing to do a barrel, pad, special moveset for all 5. I guess eventually you'll run out of ideas!
I wanna talk about Lanky ability’s here. Like maybe the hand stand and speed boost should be the same ability. Like hand stand and simple waking with the joy stick for hill and steep climbing. Now that and maybe pressing Left or right buttons to have him go faster. Making a barrel just for a speed boost could be replaced with a different ability. Like we go back to his stretchy side or his barrel has him become ruber like and they’re be 2 sticks/ spikes sticking out and Lanky could latch on and pull back and sling shot himself to an area on he has access or say in crystal cave world knock down a pillar to make a new path for another Kong to cross. Just something to ax out the unnecessary back tracking to fungi forest for Lanky’s last banana.
Best points in the videos: Ponytail Twirl is the lone S-tier unique Kong ability, nothing really comes close. Frantic Factory Boss is the best Key Boss, hands down. Disagreements: DK's lever pulling ability over Barrel Blast? one is a unique DK exclusive mini game, that is sometimes very challenging and includes secret collectibles if you're good enough at it. The other is a glorified button press, that yes, does get used as a puzzle, but Barrel Blast is actually a fun challenge versus pull 3 switches in the right order. Okay, that's all, great rankings, loved the video!
You make an excellent point! And I have to agree with you. I have a rough time with the barrels 😂 but I shouldn't let my own opinion get in the way of what's actually a creative ability. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and watching! 🍌🐒
I agree f tier on sniper. Also, because 2 of the few times used, are for both creepy castle beaver bothers 😅. Rocket barrel boost should be higher, and shockwave should be mentioned, and at A tier i think!
Already starting off strong kong 💪 My favorite ability in the whole game is the shockwave. It just looks so badass, and I wish it was in Smash Bros somehow
Love the video but I need to ask what happened to ramby transformation and banana fairy bomb? Sure, ramby is niche, but it's fun to just be mowing down baddies and opening a door or two. But the banana fairy bomb being an instant kill and free 5 coins on all dirt patches was a great find. Not to mention, I love hopping into worlds with it charging just to get a constant bubble effect during the zoom in transition.
@superjoebros64 for sure thanks man. What settings did you input? I'm seeing a long list of options and don't know what anything is. I mainly just want the easy Nintendo Coin like you got lol
Recent subscriber so if this has already been covered, apologies! I'd love to see what other people would do to swap out abilities (aka create a new one, per Kong), similar to the "Here's Why... Nintendo Switch" video did for what we'd like to see as improvements. Personally thinking on it, for DK I'd alter his Baboon Blast to be able to activate when not on his face tile. So it could be used in overworld combat - thinking like a beefed up version of his roll mechanic. IDK (not a pun) how to make it not OP? For Diddy, I'd just alter his Simian Spring slightly so that if a player were to use it to jump, he could attach his tail like a rope and 'climb' to an additional area. Could be used for additional exploration. For Lanky, I would only alter his Baboon Balloon to have temporary invincibility while inflating, nothing too drastic. For Tiny, I'd change her Monkeyport ability completely and call it Tiny Transformation. She would temporarily change into her 'older' self (to tie the two together) and get added benefits while doing so (I'm thinking a higher jump or potential double jump, fly further and hit harder), could drain quickly so as to not be OP. Lastly, for my man Chunky, I think I'd slightly change Gorilla Gone to include quick step action ability, to lean into his 'scaredy cat' trope. So if an enemy was coming at Chunky, players could hit the quick step to avoid but not alert them. Could be an interesting way to 'up' stealth opportunities in game!
This video is a banger! S tier content! I enjoy that it’s a 20 min video as well. Nicely done dude🍻 The worst thing about the jet pack is the annoying music the game plays when using it lol🤦♂️
Justice for OranguSprint! It’s so fun to use! I just wish it was needed more frequently. Sadly its uses are relatively late in the game and for very specific scenarios.
@ I think the Creepy Castle Maze is the worst, esp because of the sticky walls. It’s very counterintuitive to the ability. I know it’s probably there to hinder you but I would have just preferred a longer and more intricate maze to really just lean into using orangusprint to its fullest.
I'll give my most favorite ability from each kong and least favorite abilities in another comment. For now best. DK: Strong Kong. Because what's wrong with being invincible? Nothing! It's awesome! Diddy: Simian Spring. I'm a sucker for it because having Diddy go weeeeeeeee puts a smile to my face. Lankey: Orangastand. It's just fun running around with a handstand. Tiny: Mini monkey. It's pretty cool being small and exploring hard to reach areas and explore areas that others can't. Chunky: Primeape Punch. Love how strong this move is and against many foes.
As the Wii U version removed most of the lags (which ruin the game btw), I'm wondering if the mechanical fish golden banana is still available even with the Sniper Scope upgrade on Wii U. What do you think about both the Shockwave Attack and the Banana Fairy Camera ? They weren't mentioned in the video !
THE SHOCKWAVE! Oh man I always forget the shockwave. I'd say at least A tier. Incredible power, defeats even the toughest enemies right away, but can get pricey with crystal coconuts. The camera is not much of an ability 😅 so I'd say B tier maybe
I can't how much fun I had with jet pack on the open world with unlimited crystal coconuts and chuncky kong I would just run around and have just fun S tier for definitely
well....there was 1 ability you didn't list which was the shockwave move you unlock as soon as you start the Banana Fairy sidequest (can can be started as early as partway done with the 2nd level Angry Aztec or before starting level 3 or level 4 Frantic Factory or Gloomy Galleon), where you can charge up a powerful shockwave that costs 1 Crystal Coconut and insta-kill's any enemy that gets hit by it, useful for dealing with Kasplat's, Kosha's and groups of enemies edit: also i personally feel like DK kinda get's screwed with his abilities in Donkey Kong 64, the barrel blast course is perfectly in character with him, invincibility just feels weird and it used i think like 3 times in the game...and Gorilla Grab is just dumb
I can’t right now. I need some time to process your experience. You probably lied about it and have a vendetta against this beetle. That’s the only explanation.
And here's my least favorites. DK: Gorilla Grab. You can now pull switches. Thats it. Meh Diddy: Rocket Barrel boost. It hurts me to put it here since flying is cool but the controls for it haven't aged well. Lanky: Orangesprint. Sigh going fast is great but the challenges behind this are not fun at all. Tiny: Monkey Port. I mean it exists. And you can port. Eh. Chunky: Gorilla Gone. Being invisible is fun but again doesn't last long and the other chunky power ups are much better compared to this.
Gonna have to disagree with you on Strong Kong...almost every Banana in the game that supposedly "requires" it can be done without, as long as you have at least two melons' worth of HP. I can only think of two areas that hard require it, and one is solely a creation of the DK64 Randomizer and other ROM hacks...the spinning ice wall in the igloo of Crystal Caves didn't have a DK Barrel originally. Jetbarrel could've been better if they allowed you to zoom in like Banjo-Tooie would do. Monkeyport, O-Stand Sprint, and Gone could've been better if there were three more levels to use the move in or they otherwise spread the moves like they did in Banjo-Kazooie (nine levels, learned all moves in six, learned all the moves that mattered in three). You left out the Fairy Cam and Shockwave, the latter of which is an easy S-tier for me. ^^;
What does your tier list look like?! 🍌🐒
I personally dont find diddys jetpack that bad
@Nurah.S.S I'm a fan of it for sure! It took some time with the controls, but it's still great!
@superjoebros64 I'm with you on the Orangsprint though. Fun ability that was given annoying missions (two of which involve characters laughing in your face when you don't beat them in a race)
@ropecrewman36 such a fun ability and has potential! So close.
My favorite aspect of getting a new Kong ability from Cranky? Seeing what the funny "scientific name" is when the Kong drinks their potion. 😂
Truly a wonderful aspect of the game! 😂 some of the names are hilarious!
Still hard to believe this game is 25 years old now.
Where did the time go?!
I feel old AF now!
I read this and thought, "wait no, the game didn't come out on 1995" and then realized it's not 2020 anymore
The most annoying thing about Homing Ammo is when you're trying to pop a Banana Balloon and the homing shots are like "Nah gotta *KILL* this Zinger first!"
Seriously 😅 like cmon, we all know what's more important here lol
If you exit the sniper view while the fan is spinning in the fish, you can make it and still get the banana.
That's the trick I've heard too! A shame that they scope creates lag, but at least there's still a work around!
That sounds hilarious out of context 😭
As someone who maybe has 5K hours in this game and a former speedrunner of 101% back in the day not a bad list
Holy cow, much respect to ya 🫡 you probably know this game better than me!
Thanks for watching! More to come.
@ He’ll yeah
Chunky's air attack > All else.
That shit is so fucking funny.

Glad you’re dedicating a month of DK64 shtuff

amazing editing on this video - I'm replaying dk64 at the moment, so great timing

I certainly like the potion naming (what shows up at the bottom when drinking the potion)
it's so humorous and on point with Rare haha

The energy wave you get from the fairy queen.
I know! 😅 slipped my mind. Easy A tier, at least
@superjoebros64

Justice for OranguSprint! It’s so fun to use! I just wish it was needed more frequently. Sadly its uses are relatively late in the game and for very specific scenarios.
I totally feel this! It's a very fun ability to use, just not entirely for the challenges designed around it!
Love how strong this move is and against many foes.
awesome list of favorites! They all have moments to shine!
Was wondering about the shockwave!
@@cooperlauck186 how could I forget 😭
Before even watching I already knew which cranky kong upgrade would be in s tier lol
Hahaha ayyyye. Real ones know 🍌🐒
Didnt you forgot the...k dont remember the name the shockwave thing you get by holding B to oneshot the enemies and get the multicolored coins?
Yeah totally forgot about it. Def A or S tier!
I wish they would remaster this game and tweak a couple of mini games that involve beavers
It would be a dream come true!
Excellent editing ❤
Mah man! Thank you! 😁
I can't how much fun I had with jet pack on the open world with unlimited crystal coconuts and chuncky kong I would just run around and have just fun S tier for definitely
Oooooh great point!! With unlimited crystals, those are some S tier abilities
YESSS DONKEY KONG DECEMBER SO GLAD I'M EARLY
DON- DON- DON-KEY KONG! 🍌🐒
Saying the twirl and by extension mad jack is anywhere but Z tier is utter madness
Naaaaaah
well....there was 1 ability you didn't list which was the shockwave move you unlock as soon as you start the Banana Fairy sidequest (can can be started as early as partway done with the 2nd level Angry Aztec or before starting level 3 or level 4 Frantic Factory or Gloomy Galleon), where you can charge up a powerful shockwave that costs 1 Crystal Coconut and insta-kill's any enemy that gets hit by it, useful for dealing with Kasplat's, Kosha's and groups of enemies
edit: also i personally feel like DK kinda get's screwed with his abilities in Donkey Kong 64, the barrel blast course is perfectly in character with him, invincibility just feels weird and it used i think like 3 times in the game...and Gorilla Grab is just dumb
I can't believe I forgot the shockwave 😭 it's an amazing ability!
Agreed with DK. He could use a little touching up!
7:02 what?! Did you just call beetlerace rematch unfun?! How could you?! It was unironically amazing! I feel attacked…
I mean... I didn't have fun with it 😅
I can’t right now. I need some time to process your experience. You probably lied about it and have a vendetta against this beetle. That’s the only explanation.
It's the rematch with Lanky that is especially difficult for me
Zoomies Lankey should be hire
I can't seny zoomies Lanky is incredible
Is it late a night? Yes. But I can’t pass this up
Hahaha real ones know 😁
5:15 I went there with diddy kong when I played it for the first time and I didn’t know that I went there with the wrong kong lol
Rare knew how to pull a fast one 😂
@@superjoebros64 What do you mean by that?
ITS BEGINS! DKCEMBER!
MERRY KONG-MAS TO EVERYONE! 😁
And here's my least favorites.
DK: Gorilla Grab. You can now pull switches. Thats it. Meh
Diddy: Rocket Barrel boost.
I agree with this list! makes perfect sense to me
That arcade game had me rage quitting because I’m a completionist.
It's my nemesis lol. it's the one thing that keeps me up at night
@ Rareware really did a “get gud” with that one.
@@triggeredcat120 they sure did 😂
... What about the banana fairy ability?
Easily S or A tier!
On 12/12 should I release... the funny?
The funny?? 🤨
There is a way to switch I it’s the L button with in sniper mode
On original hardware?
What is wrong with me I am 40 watching this at work... I loved this game
ALSO,, i really appreciate your commentary " I felt that" I FEEL your " I felt that" :) lol
No no, work can wait! It's time for Monkey Smash 😂
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching 🍌🐒
I forgot entirely about the tiny warp and I played the game two months ago says a lot about it's pointlessness
haha yeeeaah. That's a real bummer. She has so many great abilities, and then this one miss
donkey kong yayyayaya
🍌🐒
RIP shockwave
My b
Tiny is peak
The GOAT! Rare was cooking when designing Tiny!
@ fr
He go big to BIGGEST
😂 mah man Chunky is huge
WEEE!
Gonna have to disagree with you on Strong Kong...almost every Banana in the game that supposedly "requires" it can be done without, as long as you have at least two melons' worth of HP. I can only think of two areas that hard require it, and one is solely a creation of the DK64 Randomizer and other ROM hacks...the spinning ice wall in the igloo of Crystal Caves didn't have a DK Barrel originally.
Jetbarrel could've been better if they allowed you to zoom in like Banjo-Tooie would do.
Monkeyport, O-Stand Sprint, and Gone could've been better if there were three more levels to use the move in or they otherwise spread the moves like they did in Banjo-Kazooie (nine levels, learned all moves in six, learned all the moves that mattered in three).
You left out the Fairy Cam and Shockwave, the latter of which is an easy S-tier for me. ^^;
Yeah those last 2 abilities went completely over my head. They're solid for sure!
Orangastand in B!?!?
I said what I said 😂 I can consider low A tier!
Man they need to put DK64 on the damn NSO and stop playing
For real, what are they doing? 😭
Monke
🍌🐒
lets gooo
🗣O-KAY! 🍌
I always feel bad for DK (in a comedic way) when using the Baboon Blast. He legit sounds like he's not enjoying being launched from the barrels.
hahaha he really does! Poor guy.
