    Unpopular opinion: I was actually glad that Mia and Sebastian ultimately broke up. They seemed to have no chemistry together, and felt that Mia was better off with her husband, who seemed to really love, support and appreciate her for herself.

      Honestly, the fastest way to get *me* to hate a character (that isn’t literally making them a Nazi, pedophile, and/or terrorist...and even then you can find nuance from that) is having the artiste who finds working at a job with consistent money to be the absolute definition of “selling out”. The other side of that coin is a “filmmaker” who just shoots whatever, claims it’s their “vision” and that they’re entitled to be praised for their ART! (which is why I can’t get through Rent without wanting to jump up and down on Mark’s windpipe with the heaviest pair of boots I own)

      I agree. The ending is unambigiously happy. Both Mia and Seb got exactly what they wanted (being a famous actor and getting their jazz bar) and the only thing they don't have is a tepid relationship with each other that they were only in for a few months anyway.

    Sebastian's views on Jazz are like a classical musician saying the only true music is Bach, Beethoven and Brahms and refuses to play any new works.

      Really. And having taken a course on the history of 19th century Gothic arts, I can safely say that the classical music scene would've gotten so unbearably dull if it just stuck with Baroque and never evolved to the likes of Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky.

      To me, it feels like the "I was Born in the Wrong Generation, I'm So Special" of movies. It's pretty obvious that the strong point of this movie is its style - It knows how to present a big fantasy dance number in the style of the classic Golden Age. But the main characters taint it with this snooty attitude that the old ways were the best and that nO oNe ApPrEcIaTeS aRt AnYmOrE. Seb is the big example of that, but I really rolled my eyes when Mia's big break, after dozens of auditions for roles beneath her talent for people who don't recognise her gift, comes in the form of a movie without a script, where the filmmakers are specifically looking for a new actress to showcase and entirely build their movie around. A movie being made in PARIS, no less!

    I understand your misgivings. From my perspective, the technically impressive eye candy and clear love of the genre was enough to overwrite that, to my mind, and I'd be lying if I said this film didn't make me tear up with nostalgia a few times. That said, I totally get why people aren't into this one, for reasons beyond being someone who just doesn't enjoy musicals. It's alright with me, though. I agree that John Legend's character is totally correct though, speaking as a jazz singer myself. One of the things we do at the clubs is what Postmodern Jukebox does: rearrange modern pop songs into more retro musucal styles that feel at home in the jazz club. No one argues that we're defacing jazz, whenever we do that, in my experience. We don't have that many Seb types, where I live.

    • @MusicalHell

      There are parts of the movie that do work--Mia's anger and despair when she's ready to give up hit hard (because been there) and "Audition" is a strong theme statement for the movie. But there's some kind of reverse synergy going on where the whole ends up less than the sum.

    • @moviemaestro800
      @moviemaestro800 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@MusicalHell I can see that. I know some people who have also "been there," and I definitely get more skeptical of Mia and Seb getting together with each rewatch. But, the good parts were enough for me to still really connect, even if it almost entirely comes down to the film's aesthetic, and the quality of the music as it was written and orchestrated. It was clear that Chazelle had a massive fondness for the 50s movie musical aesthetic, as did Justin Hurwitz for the shameless cheesiness of older film scores. Seeing it so authentically captured in a modern movie was a lot of fun in and of itself, for me, despite what I can at least agree is a rather weak character dynamic and story. I will at least wholeheartedly agree that Seb can sod off with his jazz attitude portrayed in the movie, speaking as someone who's actually a part of that community. As you said in this vid, there is so much more to jazz than the kind that makes him think jazz is "dying." It would be like people saying that rock music is dying, because there's basically no new rockabilly-type songs anymore, or that orchestral music is dying, because modern composers in that field are incorporating electronic music elements to them. Just because an older genre or subgenre of music is now niche, when it wasn't at an earlier time, doesn't mean it's dying. It just means that it has now found its core audience, and that audience is all it now needs. There are still Baroque music festivals even now which sometimes include original pieces serving as throwbacks to that era, and that style "died" over two and a half centuries ago.

Getting married in that time frame is one thing, but having a child that she presumably gave birth to? Hollywood is notoriously awful towards pregnant actresses, even A-List actresses often have to take time-off for lack of parts available to them. There is a version of this movie that could work. And I know the word is abused a lot by directors today, but this movie could have worked fantastically as a subversion of the typical musical narrative.
    Something I considered when listening to Another Day of Sun (which I do still hold is a fantastic song in its own right) and considering the subtext is that several of the main singers talk about Hollywood as it is in movies and TV, as this place where a hardworking dropout with a dream can still become a major player in the shuffle. And there was something about that blatant devotion to that ideal (plus the subtext of the black and white colorvision logo morphing into color) that made me think the movie would twist the theme.
    Maybe Mia wouldn’t become a famous actor and wouldn’t have accomplished her dream, but still finds happiness in the fact that she tried despite the naysaying of her folks at home, and maybe still finds love with someone who’s not Seb. Maybe Sebastian realized John Legend was right and that his devotion to the old ways of jazz were exactly the reason people don’t connect with it, and maybe he either drops the dream or does come around to Legends way of thinking.
    But the fact that the movie does play everything so straight is just so infuriating. It hurts even more considering the last work of the director was Whiplash, a movie that was equally subversive and had far better characters and a lot of possible nuance to how everyone was. I guess they just wanted to shoot for Oscars though...

    One quick trivia bit I was just reminded of: This film was possibly responsible for saving the historic "Angels Flight" funicular railway in L.A. A nearly identical replica of the 1901 original, which was sadly lost to development in 1969, the current version was built in 1996 using some of the original parts including both the original passenger cars. However, the ride had been shut down since an accident in 2013 and its future was in doubt. However, as it was a symbol of classic Hollywood, the ride featured prominently in one of La La Land's musical sequences, which has been credited with reminding audiences of its existence and historical prominence. Possibly as a result, the ride was restored to operation a year after the film in 2017 and today continued to transport passengers up and down Bunker Hill.

    Honestly, the only song in the Soundtrack I ACTUALLY liked was A Lovely Night. Out of Context of the movie, it sounds like two character that have great chemistry. It's perfectly written for the ranges of our two singers (seems to be the only song that did that-) and it's amazing to me that a song that's so romantic and makes me want to see two people together- IS IN A MOVIE WHERE I /DONT'/ WANT THE TWO LEADS TO GET TOGETHER. What? Did they hire great writers for that ONE SONG?!

    Watching this, something dawned on me. Sebastian as a character is a younger version of Mr. Fletcher from Whiplash. That scene in the jazz club and his whole demeanor toward jazz feels like the "there are no two words more harmful than "Good Job"" speech from Whiplash. The difference is, while Whiplash recognizes the toxicity of that character and that line of thinking (even though the film ultimately subscribes to the fact that there's some merit to it), Sebastian is played up as the hero, so his worldview is never questioned or explored in any meaningful beyond it being his dream, and I feel that's where Damien Chazelle as a writer failed Sebastian. I feel like he ascribed to this character his own passion for jazz, and while he explored the toxicity of it in Whiplash, La La Land is, by design, a more shallow movie, so it can't really explore that.
    Still and all, I think there are worst people out there than Sebastian. I feel La La Land is ultimately about that person in your life that you were never meant to spend the rest of your life with, but who was crucial to a specific part of your journey, and while you may at times wonder what life with this person would be like if you were meant to spend the rest of your life with them, in the end, what was meant to happen happened. That's how I read the ending anyway. Sebastian is constantly pushing Mia, even when she's giving up, and that was exactly what she needed at that particular point (and yes, Sebastian wasn't always the best person while doing it, but he pushed her to write her one-woman show and then picked her up to take her to the audition).
    I do agree Sebastian is flawed and I definitely think the movie would have been better if it questioned his worldview more, but I've met people who are way worst. Also, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have amazing on-screen chemistry, even I agree these two people were ultimately wrong for each other. Watch Crazy Stupid Love for another example of just how radiant their chemistry (thenagain, these are two actors who usually have great chemistry with their co-stars).
    That said, I do agree the movie is never as good as Another Day of Sun (maybe the scene in the planetarium), Ryan and Emma can't sing and yes, How Far I'll Go and Audition are both way better songs than City of Stars (or maybe it's just that City of Stars never feels like a complete song).

    I think a big flaw of the movie is the white A-list actors... for me it trully feels forced that these beautiful well known actors seem to be struggling in Hollywood. I know they are actors and that’s their jobs, but it really throws me off every time I watch it. I think there is definitely some problems with the structure of the movie, but unknown actors of color would, in my opinion, improve the movie way more, and also be more authentic for the overall message of the movie in the process. • @sirrliv
    @sirrliv 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    For all the hype this movie got on release and its Oscar nominations, I was always suspicious of it for having no clear idea of what it was all about from the trailers and reviews; everybody praised the hell out of its cinematography and acting (in broad strokes), but clammed up when it came to anything specific regarding the plot. I couldn't even tell what time period it was meant to be in or the level of reality we were dealing with; best I could guess was a Chicago-style modern reality with 40's-50's Golden Age fantasy elements. As a result, as much as I'm generally a fan of movie musicals, I just could not find any interest for this one.
    After this review, it sounds like I dodged a bullet. Setting aside the utter lack of chemistry between the two leads, the shallow moralizing about "selling out" versus "passion for your art", which is even more shallowly executed, all of which would be fatal blows to any film in their own right, there's one aspect that especially bothers me thanks to this review: The idea of the main character being "the savior of Jazz". Um, no, he's not, because jazz doesn't need saving. Jazz as a musical genre is more alive and well now than it ever has been in its past hundred years of existing as a musical genre! While it may not be at the top of pop charts now, it is still being invoked by such big names as Mehgan Trainor, Taylor Swift, even John Legend who is in this film! Go to any city in America and you will find at least one local jazz ensemble performing live every night (in areas not shut down because of the COVID Death Plague, of course). They may not always be conventional takes on the genre, but as Diva herself points out there are so many subschools of jazz as to render any claims about what is or isn't "conventional" practically moot.
    Let me put it this way; Four Words: 8. Bit. Big. Band. You have a full scale orchestra ranging in size from 25 to 65 members getting together purely to perform jazz renditions of video game music! And you're trying to tell me with a straight face that capital J "Jazz" is dying and in need of saving?! Fuck off!
    P.S. Kieth's comment about "How are you so stuck in the past? Jazz is about the future," is just as right as it is wrong. Yes, some genres of jazz do lean more toward a progressive sound, but there are other subgenres that center around preserving and progressing the styles of the past; his synthesized postmodern take is no less valid than a classic big band swing group. Particularly as a historian with a personal penchant for music, this line rubs me the wrong way. You don't have to be stuck in the past, but you also don't have to use holding onto the past as a reason someone is in the wrong. You want an example of how past and future forms of jazz can exist together at the same time? Try some Caravan Palace or Caro Emerald for examples of a little thing called "electro-swing", and then tell me how jazz is "about the future" in such absolute tones.

    • @lissaquon607
      @lissaquon607 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you - I love electro swing and big band and blues and all the other delightful little side jaunts the genre has had and so the weird plot point of "lets save and argue over Jazz" was where I started yelling at the TV. After stopped rolling my eyes at the White Savior bit.
      Also the scene where he forcibly drags her to a jazz club to explain to her that her experiences with jazz music is Wrong and she should feel Bad was awful. She clearly is talking about smooth jazz which IS more or less background noise compared to whatever the goddamn hell he's hung up on. How is this supposed to be a romantic lead? Mansplaining someones experience isn't sexy.
