    You know, given that Mariah was married to a music exec who claimed responsibility for her rise to fame and she described their divorce as a way of reclaiming her "freedom", that makes the undertones of her and Dice's relationship a little uncomfortable.

      Becky Hopkins Mariah married Tommy Matola because she thought he loved her. He used her vocal capabilities for his and Sony's own gain. And worked her like slave EVERYDAY during the marriage. All she did was record,tour, and promote. She even remained a virgin until the age of 28.
      This another personal reason why I hate Sony.
      Glitter was conceited and written in late '97.

      As far as I remember that episode, one of them was writing wonderful lyrics but couldn't come up with a melody, and the other was writing a great melody but couldn't come up with lyrics. When Arnold combined the lyrics and melody into a great song it was believable that two people who had a long history together could have written separate elements that came together perfectly. It wasn't as ridiculous as people actually writing the same thing.

    What really pisses me off about "Glitter" is that it's trying (and failing) to be "A Star is Born". What makes "A Star is Born" work (namely the 1954 version) is that Norman Maine (the-ugh-"Dice" character), while deeply flawed, he is ultimately very human, sympathetic, and tragic. On top of that, he was a legitimate star before he discovered his protege/love interest. Dice is just some low-rent DJ who puts most male characters in Lifetime movies to shame in terms of nasty, abusive, and just plain dick-ish behavior.
    Look, I'm no writer by a mile-long shot, but if they insisted on having the "don't take people you love for granted" moral, why not frame this story this way: Billie (who, in this iteration, is a harder, more complex character) takes Dice (who is a genuinely good person this time) for granted, be it because of her early experiences, or being corrupted/blinded/distracted by fame and fortune. Dice then tragically dies, Billie realizes too late the error of her ways, sings the sad, Oscar-bait song, the end (sorry, but I choose to excise that contrived reunion with her deadbeat mom, because it rings so hollow to me).
    Yeah, that's not a masterpiece, either, but I maintain it would have held up better than this dreck!

      Originally the movie was not supposed to be so similar to A Star Is Born, but those aspects were added in near the end to make the movie more palatable. Had the movie gone as you suggested, it would've lost even more of the original premise and concept of the movie. Either way, it would've been pretty awful.

      you know I would probably write lilian as a successful r&b star who fell from grace due to bullies father being straight up abusive and nearly killing her. Lilian sends Billie to a foster home to protect her and purposefully falls off the map to protect Billie.
      sure it's not quite oscar worthy, but it's definitely better than what we got.

    1.) Why did Timothy kill Dice? How is he going to get his 100K if Dice is dead? He was having a hard enough time doing it while he was alive--he certainly isn't going to get it now! 2.) "8 Mile" does have its problems, but at least Eminem was human enough to get pissed and frustrated at his mother fucking up and making life harder for him. Here, Billy's mother could be the Zodiac Killer, and I still think she would idolize her. There's just no range of emotion. 3.) The 3rd act break-up is probably one of the most annoying cliches out there, and yet they find a way to make it *more* painful by making them psychic! Which makes me wonder how she didn't know Dice had been killed. She can feel him writing a song but not dying? 4.) Fantastic review as always! The whole ending with the "Appreciate those you have before they're gone" especially for Dice makes me think of the bulls--- the Family Guy writers did with killing off Brian Griffin and reviving him three weeks later by saying he made the episode so "people would appreciate those around them." If only both of these things could show those messages with characters who actually had some redeeming qualities.

    At 18:19, when the movie tried to make Dice seem all sweet and heartwarming by giving Billie that note and the single rose kinda reminded me of that episode of that _Batman The Animated Series_ episode "Mad Love" when Harley Quinn got pushed out the window by The Joker and was about to call it quits with him until he sent her a rose and a note that read: "Feel better soon, J" and she called him, in her own words, an "angel.". Granted Dice isn't as evil as Joker, but it just gave me that vibe, anyone else? And if I wanted to see a musical set in the 1980's about appreciating those around you, I'd watch _Rent._

    • @janebyrne6463
      @janebyrne6463 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Mad Love" was originally a one-shot comic written by Paul Dini. The comic ended with Harley in the hospital ward at Arkham as her old mentor asks her, "How did it feel to give all of you for the Joker, only to get nothing in return?" Harley starts, "If felt..." before seeing the rose and the note from Mr. J., then she says, "It felt like a kiss." Much as I enjoyed Batman the Animated Series and, later, The New Batman Adventures, I am glad that Harley (one of my favorite anti heroines) finally break away from Mr. J. and be her own person.

    I fucking hate this trope, you put It into words perfectly. I feel like women are emotionally blackmailed into feeling like they should reciprocate their abuser's feelings. That is why I don't really like POTO for example. Many people say Christine is a bitch because she didnt stay with Erik, while she did what any sane woman would do in that position.

    • @alexmg3648

      ***** True. It's the phandom that shames Christine, not the material.

    • @luv4hutch
      @luv4hutch 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I've never fully believed either camp. I agree that Christine loves Raoul, and clearly is going to be much happier with him. But calling him the hero of the piece is a huge stretch. Phantom has no heroes or villains, just compelling and flawed characters, who we can't help but root for at all times. Also, to say that Christine has NO attraction to Erik is intellectually dishonest. Yes, she does kiss him more out of pity than anything, but she was clearly intrigued and interested, wanting to get to know him. If Christine had been in an environment where polyamory was encouraged, she would've eagerly gone for it, I guarantee you. The sayig is, after all, "there's three stories: yours, mine and the truth." But yes, the ending is so powerful, and LND, while it had intriguing ideas and really strong songs, negates that ending in a very uneasy manner that doesn't sit well.

    On the Dice being overly controlling bit, it came across as worse than you implied to me:
    Even if we're meant to be buying into the abuse-justifying 'oh, it's so romantic, he's overly-protective of her he's obviously really in love with her' bollocks that crops up way too frequently in media, he's a producer who's seems to be primarily collaborating with a single artist at this point in his career (actually based on what you showed he seemed to be acting as more of her manager than her producer, seemingly deciding what songs to take, what gigs to play, who to collaborate with, what cuts of her music videos should be used...), said artist being a rising starlet who's just been offered a coproduction with an established star.
    The movie depicts him as incompetent! I don't care how good you are, . And given how much he's working with her at this point, things that are good for her career are going to be good for his. She picks up some fans of the established checking out her latest album? THey're being exposed to a work you've done the production of; that's boosting your profile even if the established star is . Trying to ban her from working with him is bad for both of your careers in an extremely fickle industry. Most artists are lucky to get 5 years; Madonna, Kylie, Pet Shop Boys and the like are the exceptions, not the rule. The acts Todd features on One Hit Wonderland are your more typical success stories, and since a lot of them are still able to tour on the back of their brief successes, did remarkably well off of it.
    I don't care if you're jealous that someone more successful than you is working with the woman you're allegedly in love with, if we're meant to buy that you're not deliberately sabotaging her career to keep control of her which given the rest of the movie is probably not the reading we're meant to take from it, your behavior in that scene is just pure incompetence.

    • @briannab4037

    Diva, once again, magnificent! This film made my wife ANGRY (the apologizing for the feelings of an abuser). I apologize but I will plead again for a review of Velvet Goldmine -- the (1997) Todd Haynes fantasy vision of 1970s glam rock (many people have said that it is a heavily fictionalised version of Bowie's life -- Bowie did not want to license his music for use in the film). It is a beautiful film, filled with beautiful people (young Christian Bale! young JRM! young Ewan McGregor! My goddess Toni Collette!), language (Oscar Wilde quotes!), costumes, and music (except for the bad cover versions), but it definitely has its flaws, and I would love, love, love, love to hear your assessment of its hits and misses. I think it is a very provocative exploration of a "musical" film.

    Hm. If Billie and Dice _do_ have a subconscious psychic link, even if it only works on music-related stuff, that could explain why they keep getting drawn together no matter how terrible they are for each other. It's not that they feel some kind of unseen connection, or that Dice is a possessive asshole and Billie is a naive doormat (or at least, not _just_ that), but a psychic force that tells them they are connected, that they _belong_ together.
    And if that was intentional, it could be a _fascinating_ deconstruction of true love, soulmates, and similar romantic shortcuts.

    But yeah, Mariah Carey is a fantastic singer but even she can't create gold out of a turd, especially when the overall framing of Glitter is just....horrible around, Glitter earned its spot as one of the worst films of all time.

    This movie ould have worked a lot better if the characters had more dimension, Dice got his ass kicked by someone(s) for being an abusive manipulative douchebag preferable by at least one person in the industry. Before getting dumped by Billie because she finally got tired of the way he treated her and is never seen again. The Sylk thing was either dropped or was made into a good singer. And people weren't constantly singing Billie's praises all the time and she was allowed to have a few flaws. Not just terrible choices in boyfriends. Allowing Billie and her mother to stay in contact with each other, so their reunion could actually be heartwarming. Not romanticizing abuse that shit is WAY overdone. And a whole lot of other crap.
    Also did Dice walk into the scene with his shirt totally unbuttoned before bitching at Billie for "everything hanging out!". Does her dress have a slit all the up to her the side of her chest?

    The saddest part is, I was a Mariah Carey fan in the mid-90s. I loved her vocal power and range, I fell for the pure schmaltz that was "One Sweet Day", her energetic numbers like "Fantasy" and "Emotion" were two of my favorite songs as an early adolescent (and yet it still took me till I was 19 to realize I was gay, go figure)...
    ...but this movie. Yikes. I'd even be able to forgive her acting if not for the utterly trite story and deeply disturbing relationship.

He turns out to be an asshole, while the singer guy is nice and they have a budding relationship, while she has to fight to get out of some sort of deal/contract she had with Dice. That didn't happen. Apparently Dice wasn't (? I know right?) the antagonist of this movie.

    The “psychic connection” thing was done way back in Jane Eyre. Jane stared into a candle and Rochester happened to be staring at the moon, and each “mesmerized” themselves and they briefly called out to each other and could “communicate”. But this was done when “animal magnetism” was a new craze and people genuinely believed it might be a thing. This could not be an intentional nod to that scene, but rather a tattered, diluted version passed down and turned ridiculous. Just like the entire movie being a rehash turned to flavorless mush. But it did make me think of it. And I honestly don’t even like it in Jane Eyre. I can’t help but prescribe to the reading where Rochester is as possessive and controlling as Dice, and it is not a good love story. (Neither is Wuthering Heights, speaking of Brontës; Heathcliff is truly evil.)
    Very random sidetrack, I know.
