    Nice to see some work done on a manual mill. I'm not sure what fixtures and tools the gun shop in the video has, but the radius at the front of the optic is not a difficult operation to do on an manual mill. Provided, of course, you have a rotary table. Use a 50mm radius setup on the rotary table and you can mill the radius to locate the optic even better. They opted not to do this, which should be adequate. As for the comments regarding "send this to someone who knows what they are doing," those are almost all done with CNC machines. If a month+ turnaround and four times the price is worth it to you, then it makes sense; however, on a manual mill I could radius these cuts at the same level of precision and use locator pins in lieu of milled bosses while you wait. This job wouldn't take more than an hour from setup to finished product, and $80 would be fair. I wouldn't even bother with my CNC unless I had at least 10 of the same slides to do. You spend more time in CAM creating tool paths than you would just cutting it on a manual machine.

      i would rather pay 50 to 80 $ for this to be done in an hour. this is an easy process and if u wanted could take more time and make it as nice as you wanted. this can be done even in a more crude way that actually would work with common knowledge of machining and making sure everything is leveled and squared, although wouldnt recomend it.

I was told that they don't mill slides and they would send it out and act as the middle man. When asked about this video the young man on the call said he wasn't aware of this video.

    • @robotech

    • @beachboardfan9544
      @beachboardfan9544 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MrJohnylompoc
      @MrJohnylompoc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use an adjustable 6 inch fly cutter for the radius. It should have the radius and be semi press fit in, having the sight just snugged with screws only is not correct.

    Just wondering I was considering having this done to one of my glocks but it was my understanding that the front actually had a radius milled into the slide to match the rmr and was done to further secure the optic because then is couldn't shift left or right it could only lift straight off the slide(hope I explained that clearly) anyway is this not necessary? I'm just a lil parinoid to switch to a red dot over traditional sites and still trying to deside if I trust it enough for a carry gun.

    • @undeadzerg8758

      Not advisable. You want the optic being held by the slide to help keep zero, take some of the stress off the screws, and have a lower sight picture closer to the barrel.

    • @TropUSA
      @TropUSA  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Germ its a substitute to a back up rear sight. Think similar to XS sights. It works up close and is fast but does leave quite a bit to be desired in intermediate distances. We ultimately installed a rear sight on this pistol as a more consistent back up.

    • @janeb9355

      The length is 45mm, the depth is 3.071 mm, and the width is the width of the slide. Go slowly and use a carbide tip cutter. Id reccoment 1,000-1,200 rpm for this type of job.

      There's a publicly available RMR blueprint with a callout for a 3.00" +/- .010" radius at the front of the RMR. It would've been incredibly easy to interpolate this and could've been done in a matter of minutes, but it was skipped right over.
      That, and the fact that it was milled flat with no studs for supporting the RMR neither in the front or by the mounting screws. Again, could've been easy to interpolate to make the slide secure the RMR even further. Depending on the material of the fasteners, they're going to bust after extended use.
      There's a right and wrong way to machine a customer-supplied $300 slide, this is not the right way. I would be demanding a replacement.

    • @beachboardfan9544
