I only have one question. Can the $500 padlock be opened with a 25,00 rpm carbide cut-off wheel? The tool and the wheel is available from Harbor freight for under $50. Wouldn't that be the shits id a $50 tool can defeat a $500 lock?

Nice! They are pretty good all around locks that you can pick up at the Hardware store. Lots of attack defiance in mind but in the end any lock simply buys time not 100% security. Thanks foe watching!

Lockpickinglawyer picked this 24/7 in about 10 seconds. (See his video. ) It's not hard to pick if you do that sort of thing. The 6 pins are worth about 5 seconds more than 4 pins.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Abus 37 series "Granit" insurance locks. These go for under $100 new and are almost as good as the Abloy 350/362 models. They can be picked, but only by a master with a special tool. They will either laugh at or outright break any bolt cutter known to man, and they take many minutes with an angle grinder to saw through. Pretty good for the money, especially for a high-end bike. Pair these with a Pewäg or Laclede security chain.

I am not worried abour picking but cutting the shackle because that's what thieves usually do. The hardest, the better in my opinion. I like the light Titalium Abus padlocks to be carried in my motorbike as improvised disk locks for both brakes because two are lighter than a single true disk lock but I am not sure how hard are their shackles.

Perhaps you can recommend a padlock for my semi-truck trailer used for unattended wilderness storage. People don't try to pick the lock, or drill it out, and they don't usually carry bolt cutters with them, so those corresponding specs are somewhat useless. What they use is a hammer. Several strong downward blows is all I've found it takes on top of the padlock for the shackle to come out. What padlocks can you recommend are most resistant to this type of real-world destructive assault? Has any of this type of destructive testing ever been done?
Over the years I've had to occasionally break padlocks on fences, etc. I've never drilled one out, picked a lock or used bolt cutters, I've only used a hammer and and its always worked, at least with Master padlocks, with just a few blows.

I can't really recommend a combination padlock as most of them has significant weaknesses however you could put the key to the Stanley padlock in one of those key vaults that bolts to your building and has a combination that allows you to access that similar to a realtor's key box

What are your thoughts about a combination lock? I understand they're much harder to pick but easy to bust open with a sledge hammer.
We just purchased an Abus 190CS/60 C 60mm Body Solid Steel Combination Padlock for our storage unit. (It cost around $50.) It uses a hardened steel jacket with a hardened special alloy shackle. Looks like there's not enough room for cutters, and the combination is recessed in the bottom of the lock which might help it withstand a sledgehammer...?
We have several thousand dollars worth of household goods in the locker and don't want to skimp on protection. We're allowed 2 locks so we're also using one of those round keyed locks, like the one you showed. I can't remember the manufacturer but I think it's the one sold at the storage units because 90% of all the other lockers are using this exact same lock. These are easy to pick (as you've shown) so we added the Abus.
    Thanks for the great video!

What do you think about the Multi-T-Lock E-Series locks and or Assa 2 vs Stanley in security, not price

    • @waynewinton
      @waynewinton  10 ปีที่แล้ว

Combining eletronic and mechincal access is the best way to ensure security. Mul-T-Lock has some cool products and seems to be a good high security lock but a high buy in of $7,000.00+ dollars is keeping me from using or servicing there product. I have also seen many videos of them being picked. Stanley products can be built to be almost as secure has high security for 1/4 of the price. Mul-T-Lock has one of the best high schroud pad locks. ASSA has the P600 locks but finding the high schroud ones is next to impossible.
If Money is no object here is how I would rank them:
      S&G 951 and 951C
      Alboy Protec 2
      ASSA P600
      Mul-T-Lock MT5 - #14 E series
      Medeco
      Stanley 24/7
Note look up "Watch Lock" its a lock that is monitored by GPS and when tampered with it sends a signal to your phone so it is the only interactive pad lock that alerts your when you stuff is tampered with.

Excellent video to convey some of the basic differences in physical & key security as well as an understanding relative worth.
I recently picked up the 50mm version of the Stanley (828145) because of the value it represents. A few extra starting perks over most other budget choices is the SC keyway is harder to navigate than Master's and many others and the included cylinder also uses full-size pins instead of the smaller padlock size pins and the spring tension on the core makes getting feedback from the pins a lot harder than most as you might not even know you have it picked and end up resetting. Better for durability & upgrading. You could re-key it to match you home or other SC or just upgrade it for better security with more and better security pins as well as mods like threading the core/bible is you are very careful and industrious. Beyond that though is the fact that the entire outer casing is hardened steel, and not laminated where you can easily shear rivets off of and has a shackle guard protecting a molybdenum shackle. This means that it is a superb foundation to be UPGRADED.
You can use the tailpiece with a large selection of actual high-security KiK cylinders to raise this to locks rivaling a Medeco at a much more affordable price. I am about to pick up a Scorpion (in USA is sold under Marks) CX5 KiK cylinder which has high tolerances on 6 pins (including ASSA-style security pins) as well as a 5-pin slider controlled sidebar for the equivalent of $45-50 USD to upgrade it much like you did using your ASSA Twin (which is also a great core but harder come-by and a fair bit pricier from what I've seen in general).
ABUS, American Lock, etc all have a number of models with good physical build security but this Stanley series as a foundation blows them out of the water at this price-point, and becomes gold once you do anything at all to upgrade your core. Getting a locksmith like you to cut a new key with a nasty bitting and upgrading the pins alone is a great addition. Threading it would raise it to the point it would waste a lot of time for an experienced intermediate picker. Get your hands on a used quality higher-security KiK and you can outclass many substantially more expensive locks.
All in all a great product to start and even better as you grow with it. I will be picking up the 60mm version for collection for sure.

Wayne Winton Im looking for a good solid lock to secure my motorbike at school, I was looking at this video and looked up the Stanley one, It uses hardened steal, now my school is in a big city, i watched you video on the Chain aswell, would you think the Stanley lock will be secure enough for use to lock up my motorcycle(worth about 5-6grand)?
Also what lock is the Disc one? it seems quite solid!
    Thanks in advance!!

I can't promise anything and there are no guarantees but I can say that I personally use and recommend this lock and that chain to all of my clients. I have never had a reported theft of any property when using them properly. Simply put your lock and chain just needs to be more intimidating than the one next to you. Thieves pray on the weakest and least secured item they can find. The disk lock is a master lock and I do NOT recommend it. Small key with only 4 pins make it easy to pick or drill. The shackle is also much thinner.

Do you know if an Abloy Protec2 can be put into a Squire SS65CE body? I think this closed shackle padlock config, if possible, with an Almax 19mm might be the best bike lock solution.

First, thanks for posting all the videos! I just spent an hour watching them.
I need to get 4 keyed alike padlocks for a car trailer. Can you recommend a lock for this application? I was looking at maybe the smaller Stanley 50mm and having them keyed alike? What about puck locks? Just want something decent that won't break the bank and can't be cut with bolt cutters. If they really want to get in they'll just cut the trailer bars. Thanks!

      @waynewinton  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Puck locks usually only have 4 pin cylinders. Shackle schroud locks are best way to go. Stanley, Abus or Mul-T-Lock would be best.

Wayne Winton Do you sell the Stanley 50mm lock? If yes could you shoot me a quote for 4 of them keyed the same? I'm not sure if the local locksmith would know about keeping pins as secure as you do. If you don't sell them I could have them shipped to you to be re-keyed? www.amazon.com/Stanley-Hardware-Hardened-Security-Shackle/dp/B001V5IYSS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433685854&sr=8-1&keywords=s828-145&pebp=1433685864824&perid=0QHGYEXD6D71G777XC31

They are OK. I rate them above master lock but still under the Stanley locks. I just did not have one avaible at the time of video. American Lock is also not avaible at the local Lowe's or Home Depot where most people looking for a lock would find one. They are only avaible through my private supplier.Quality dose matter and to be honest the Abus locks in Europ are one of the best. They are just not avaible here.

Never heard of it. Titanium is extremely difficult to work with so making a actual entire lock housing and cylinder with all the moving parts and tite tolerances would be insanely expensive.

Flat key locks with teeth on bolth sides are not that great. They sell common picks for them or if a key is shaved properly you can make one key open any of that style of lock. Circular locks are ok but can also be picked or drilled.
