I for the life of me can’t figure out why this channel hasn’t exploded yet. The voiceover here is top tier in my opinion and dudes a damn good woodworker as well.
Idk but I enjoy listening to him talk while I’m watching.
I hope he gains the traction that this channel deserves.

My father was a carpenter by trade, a craftsman by desire. He was fond of box making and, had he not passed many years before the internet was probably even contemplated, would have been a fan of your work. As a child, and I’m now 78, I can recall the countless hours he spent in his home shop fashioning small works of art we simply called “boxes”. Boxes his friends keenly admired in the hopes he might take pity on them and craft one for their keepsakes. Keep up the ”fine wood crafting”.

Those boxes are beautiful ❤ I work with an old jobsite tablesaw..im on limited cash, and it was free, so there's that. The free part came afterit fell off the work truck at 45mph and gave it a versatile, depending upon your point of view, bend on the aluminum top, kinked the saw thing under it that made it all "straight" and busted the power swith right off...oddly enough the stand made it with minimal damage and is one of, if not its only, best qualities. I replaced the power switch, cut the versatil bend off of the top, and prit'near the entire portion right of the blade, about 6 or so many inches. Needless to say the truck never stopped to pick up the saw..so i stopped, pulled it out from under my bumper and i never looked back, praise jesus...Now I will tell you I've worked off that saw for almost 6 years.. and just figured out how to straighten the underbelly out, so im only out of whack about 1/4" now... I know what you're thinking, I could easily be mistaken as a wood master of the universe, and rightly, you would do so. Alas, I am not. Im just a guy on a seriously strict budget and great googly moogly, have you ever just shut the camera off and lower the lights and stand in the doorway admiring your own shop? My shop is a 8x20 with 78" ceiling on the high side to 69" on the low...Ive been meaning, ok ok dreaming, about rebuilding but im still waiting for one to fall off a truck..Hey, it could happen, you gotta put it out into the Universe..you know the same one I am not a master off? ❤❤😂

Beautiful work, as usual. And the narration I find very stimulating, and at the same time comforting. Because your work turns out so nice, yet you highlight your mistakes as you proceed through. The sunburst glue bleed through, I thought looked like an extra touch of detail against the maple, as I imagined it on all of the pieces. Maybe try "screwing up" on all of them next time.😂

Very fun to watch, great content as usual.
I may have a suggestion about your veneer seams that creep open - I have had this happen to me as well in the past, especially on starburst layouts. The crux of the problem is this: the veneer absorbs moisture from the glue and swells a tiny bit before the glue sets up enough to keep it in place. Because it swells proportionately to its width, the wide end swells more so the gaps open up on the narrow pointy side. The way around this is not gluing up the seams, but using a (much) faster setting glue. Urea-formaldehide glue in a hot press is the best, it will set within about 30 seconds. Next best is fast setting PVA, which should set up in less than 5 minutes, even cold.

Great video dude! The internet doesn't provide a very accurate definition of purfling so here's some fun info. Purfling is the decorative border within the lines of the binding or (outside edging) on instruments. It adds yet another accent on the inside edge. So yours would be called binding in the luthery world.

Nice work always appreciate you showing your fixes. It is so helpful to see what can be fixed and how good it can look afterwards. Where did you get those latches got a project coming up that might be the trick. Thanks.

Stunning, beautiful, all those adjectives. I have. yet to tackle the intricacies of veneer. I'm interested to see how well the veneer holds over time. I've always heard "thou shalt use hide glue on veneer" and "that shalt use none but PVA on veneer".... etc. Seems to me like they would all work as long as. you get the coverage even. But I think PVA might work better. Thoughts?

    • @SawyerDesign
      @SawyerDesign  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah I’ve not had luck with PVA and the people I look up to recommend against it. Hammer veneering with hide glue is a pro approach that I’ve not tackled, but has been recommended. Looks messy.

@@SawyerDesign your method of building the box reminded me one of his articles in woodworking magazine but improved with real wood edges

Very nice. While you might consider yourself green at veneering I hope to oneday work up to veneering. Also, looks like we had the same idea for that Flexispot base!

At first, I thought you said " Dope Box." I went back and listened to it again, and my 10-year-old asked, "What's a dope box? " I said, "No, he said, "Hope box. " She then says, " Is he from where we used to live? I said, yes he's from Washington. He definitely, said dope box, Dad.

hahaha while I'm not opposed to a dope box, the dope box used in this video was actually a substitute for 'cool.' dope is a versatile word.

nice work. question: how are you able to plane the edges and veneer fixes without gouging into the surrounding surfaces. I have trouble with that almost every time. Thanks.

Ah damn, thought you were going to walk us through from milling scrap logs to joinery, but still a gorgeous video of gorgeous woodwork.
And I thought graphic penetration was against community standards, even if you pull out (8:27).
