    Made it here from Blacktail. I'm a consultant and know all too well the impostor syndrome of dealing with people who earn a kajillion times as much as me and make it look easy. Let me say from this work and video making: Cam was lucky to work with *you*.

    • @SawyerDesign
      @SawyerDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Thanks Raman. That’s nice of you to say. I’m just stoked to work with another craftsman!

    • @daveparker5569
      @daveparker5569 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cam seems like a stellar dude. I love his work and videos. But resin tables are resin tables. And that IS craftsmanship. But what you are found doing over here on your channel is often extremely impressive to me. I’m a graduate of James Krenov’s College of The Redwoods, and a longtime woodworker. I don’t get impressed very easily. Keep it up Brother.

    • @SawyerDesign
      @SawyerDesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Dave Parker thanks man! Really appreciate that. Definitely envious of your instruction. Did you study under Krenov or Laura?

    • @daveparker5569
      @daveparker5569 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SawyerDesign it was the year after krenov retired. He still came around occasionally. Laura was in her 2nd year and not yet on staff. So it was Michael Burns, Dave Welter, Jim Budlong, Greg Smith (f’ing genius) and Eijler Hjorth-Westh.
      It was a great experience but you are beyond anything they could teach you in a school. Honestly.

    Don't know how I tripped into watching this collab but wow on both parts of this table/wall art. Not a wood worker but enjoy watching the process. The starburst pattern reminds me of some fabric piecing I've done for quilts. I love the way it looks and believe it would make a beautiful table top. Sorry I missed out on the giveaway. Never work when hungry or tired. Congratulations on living in the grey zone. Great place to be. Best to you. Thanks for sharing.

    I watched Cam's video first, so I knew what was coming. BEAUTIFUL table base!
    You should be proud of it.
    I'm in the process of building a pedestal base for a marble table top for my mother. It's a repurposed marble porch table top that she wants to use at her new house. The base is all White Oak. Designing the base has been a challenge. No where near as fancy as your base, but it's the first table base, and is acting as a practice/prototype for a circular dining table she wants us to make using some American Chestnut wood her Father had harvested a LONG time ago, and that's been sitting in her garage for decades. We only get one shot with that wood!!

    Personally, I like both, having the radial veneer pattern on both the top and base makes for a cohesive piece, not really drawing the eyes to one specific area, but the live edge slab top combined with your table base evokes the funky, organic nature of trees, lending to the viewer’s curiosity to ingest visually the beauty of another’s interpretation of nature through an artfully created piece, great job, both of you!

    You are my hero for using a vacuum bag. Most woodworker have zero concept of how much clamping force vacuum bagging can exert and how uniform the force is. A full vacuum is -14.7 pounds per square inch (PSI), a full vacuum is impossible but depending on your vacuum pump it is possible to get close. Lets say you wanted to clamp together three 30"x 96" sheets of Baltic Birch plywood to make a workbench top and you put them in a vacuum bag to clamp them while the glue dried. Let us say you used a vacuum of -14 PSI, your work piece is 30x96= 2,880 sqft, multiply that by 14 PSI and you get a whopping clamping pressure of 40,320lbs! If you wanted to use 8"x8"x16" cinder blocks(38LBS each) to try to get the same clamping pressure it would take 1,061 blocks! And..... the stack would be 39.3 feet tall....Damn
    It is too bad the curved pieces were not 100% structural and the octagonal core was hidden up inside the top of the curved pieces with the steel pipe inside i.e. the steel pipe does not connect the base on the floor to the underside of the table base.

    Sunburst, of course. Really admire how you (both) stick to it to get it right. Table looks great and you are a creative person.

    Saw your collab with Blacktail. I love the table and am not phased at all about the concerns you both had with the end result. I know makers are really hard on themselves; I'm a part-time photographer and am super exacting about my deliverables. Still, you both create beautiful and functional art. Keep doing it!

    Dove falcons diving into wood. True art right there.

    SUNBURST
    Sawyer, you’re really outdoing yourself with series. Your video production is reaching a quality that I wouldn’t even expect from a woodworking technology business like Kreg or Rockler. Your style has always been unique, but you’re approaching a level of creativity and talent that is going to really make things happen for you. Sky’s the limit for you. I started pursuing woodwork as a hobby 3 years ago, but I knew I wanted to make it my day job after the first year. Since then, it’s been a struggle getting a solid focus. I’ve done nothing but collect tools and scraps for 2 years, outside of building my shop fixtures. I now rent 3 single car garages without electricity, and have just completed my first poured table. It’s looking real good. If I knew you’d take a look, I’d upload a video

    Both look awesome, but I think I prefer the sunburst. Nice work!
