@@HeatherREdwards I used a flat blade (standard) screw driver to get the chunks off the plunger. They came off in chunks with a bit of effort. I didn't have to chisel and mainly pried them off.
You need to change the timer too, that's probably the cause. If the timer gets wonky, it'll sometimes stick, and if it sticks during the drain cycle, electricity continues to be supplied to the solenoid and it gets hot enough to burn the plastic.
So you changed this without pulling the dishwasher out? I need to do this service this weekend. This is very helpful. Also, where on that timer knob is the drain cycle if I want to jump to that to test the dishwasher? Is it near "Rinse Only" mark or after "Plate warmer"?
Did this service yesterday, the plunger was really stuck to the solenoid so I just used a new one; works great now. This video was very helpful and I did not have to take the dishwasher out to do this; thank you so much. I will keep an eye on it for next few months to see if this happens again and if I need a new timer. The timer seemed to be working well and did not seem to get stuck in "drain open" for a long time, so really not sure what melted the plastic in the solenoid in the first place. Thanks again.
@@leisuredrummer is there an easy way to check the timer to make sure it's operating properly or is it usually the timer, one year old dishwasher, replaced the solenoid at six months, just melted again and have to replace again, was working fine with no issues then bam, didn't work, no lead up to the problem, just filled up with water like last time
@@buckeyeg4888 I don't know a great way to check the timer unfortunately. Mine seemed like it was working fine and then would get hung up in the drain position seemingly randomly which would cause the solenoid to burn up.
Thanks. I just cleaned the burnt plastic as well. They wanted $40 for a new plunger.

@@HeatherREdwards I shaved it with an exacto knife as best I could then used 120 grit sandpaper I had laying around to make sure it was all removed

How do you get the plunger clean enough to get it out of the solenoid? Mine is stuck pretty good
might have to use a little muscle but they're hard to break, solid metal

What’s the reason the solenoid gets burnt out?
Mario Gonzalez usually it’s due to the timer going out.
That's why ours went out too, was the timer going bad.

this will be my second selenoid in one month why are they burning out does anyone know ?
