I believe Rock hounding, in a nutshell, exists as a form of withdrawal that we as modern humans are experiencing on behalf of our ancestors. we've been using stone tools for thousands of years all the way up until 2 or 3 centuries ago and just shut it off due to the advent of technology...
I believe that the act/ hobby that we call rock hounding is a sympathetic nervous reaction to the involuntary forfeit of our ancient wisdom.
