Actually it's just the opposite if they soak up water then they crack when they dry out because they lose the water so rapidly it causes them to fracture. Once you put them in water you can't go back. Think about it, these have been out in Eastern Washington sunlight for millions of years. With very little rain. It's better to keep them dry. Take that from a opal cutter who spends 8 hours a day cutting
Have heard that doing the same with mineral oil will clear them up and allow them to remain thay way once they are removed from the oil. Nor sure if that is true or not.
Talk about living the dream! Huge props to Jenny. Thank you for sharing with us less fortunate plebs who do not have a legendary opal deposit in our backyard. That is so freaking cool.
Great video, I just went over to her Etsy page and bought a piece, I prefer to dig my own but I figured that she was kind enough to share her treasure with all of us that’s the least I could do!
I am gobsmacked. Finding clear, stable, fire opal in one's backyard is insane. Precious fire opal too! Would be interested in seeing how Jenny's opal cuts.
That moment when the play of color flashed on the one piece….WOW! What an incredible discovery in her backyard! Thanks for taking us on the journey to see this amazing deposit!
Dug up my yard for a new water line once, I only found worms. It's good to hear that fire in your voice as you were pulling out pieces. Tumbling them was a bit of a surprise to me, but with that much material why not try. Thank you for taking us along.
Amazing, what a dream come true! How many of us would geek out over having opal in out back yard!? That's like winning the rock lottery! I have paid for opal that is precious and it did not look as good as that opal, it's stunning to say the least! I love all opal. It has so many different colors. I feel there is a bunch more in washington state. We used to live in Tacoma and I remember at 7 years old, that that Washington state was a very special place. Our back yard was the forest and its pretty great and will always have a special place in my heart. I hope Jenny has an etsy shop!!!
How insanely wonderful to have opals in your backyard. Good for Jenny and Wow! If you don't already know, different size new paint brushes are good during digging. Nice video and thanks for sharing. 👍👌
I would love to have someone near me with your kind of knowledge that would be willing to let me tag along so I could learn more about the rocks, minerals, and gems. I learn better with hands-on than through books I have a comprehension disorder so I have to learn things differently. i want to know more
Awesome video. That was very kind of her to let you dig and make a video on her property. That's like every rockhounds dream to have that on their property. All the different color variations too! Also, those are some keen observations you've made on opal like that being found. You definitely know your basalt! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video. 😁
Well... that was just super fun. Whenever I find myself in a spot where everything I was looking for is all around me, I usually get the giggles of amazement. I wasn't there and I had the giggles. Thank you for sharing the your experience. I will be having wonderful dreams tonight. Thank you very much. Be happy, safe and stay healthy. 😷⚒ te-hee
does this mineral spontaneously fracture ? it looks like the pieces have exploded underground. The freeze line is deeper than the roots will grow? Does the freeze/thaw cause the fracturing. @15:35, NICE !!! that little flash of green would have me shouting and giving my location away! Good job not showing background mountains...
Wow! That really is some exceptionally beautiful material. It was really cool that it was found in someones yard, and in such quantity and quality! And that flash in that one piece was really unexpected! Thank you for the work and bringing us the information!
Impressive material! Awesome Fire Opal! Congratulations on your discovery! Greatly resembles the fire opal found in Lake county, OR. Great color play! Precious stuff indeed!
I pulled a 110lb boulder opal from a creek in Healdsburg CA. It had a lotta host rock. But there was some white potch but also black orange pink brown yellow pink and green colors in it. I cabbed out a bunch of pieces. It has dried out with out crazing. Many more to come.
I’m so glad this video was made because I’ve done tons of the stuff in Northern California and I was hoping it was helpful. Thank you this is a great with you I hope there’s a follow up!
Loving the fire and the clarity in there - this is an awesome find! But honestly, some of those "picture" opals like the ones from 20:47 - 22:25 are the ones blowing my mind. The patterns and colors are crazy! It would be great to try to cut and polish some of that material.
Would love to hear the back story of how she found the Opals. I have 10 acres and poke and prod it all the time. Found what may be fire clay and a few marine fossils...not much. Love your Video's and agree this one is the best so far.
8:00 I wonder how well one of those steaming sprayers for cleaning your kitchen would work if you had a plug for it. Or power source. You just see it shining up washing away all the dirt around it.

I'm amazed at the red opal that you're finding. The quality of this opal appears to be excellent. There are so many ear rings and necklaces as well as bracelets jewelry that could be made to Adorn these stones. They are beautiful
@@CurrentlyRockhounding I picked up a 4" heavy duty grinder wheel from harbor freight today because I was killing myself trying to level out rocks with just the 50 grit discs, lol.
I had a hard time watching this, especially when you held up the jug with water and opal in it, honestly I got light headed 😵!..this is absolutely 💯 unbelievable 😳. Wonder what it would feel like to have opal beds in your backyard!..you looked like you were having a hard time containing yourself too!..I mean seriously?...who has this much opal?..I'm going to have to watch this again.
@@CurrentlyRockhounding Same here in New Jersey of all places. Most down southern NJ is common opal but small fragments are found occasionally. Seems most the good shit is up north.
I live on property west of Spokane and this stuff is everywhere in our fields. I pick it up every spring and by the next year new stuff will have worked it's way to the surface. I thought what I found was opal when I first seen it but, even though some of it is really transparent. I'm still not convinced it isn't carnelian.
It sounds like you're find some interesting material and I would be happy to help you with an identification on if you want to email me some photos. There are also some really simple tests you can do that will determine if what you have is opal or carnelian.

I don't think I'd leave the backyard, lol. It's amazing! 😊
water will be your best friend with this! always want to keep your opals wet so they dont fracture. a bucket of water to put your finds in.
Thats only if the opal is hydrophane or porous like ethiopian material
