    • @trianglemoebius
      @trianglemoebius ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@peopleofearth6250 This is somewhat true for the parties, yes, but not for individuals. And individuals are the things that vote, and a party is only as strong as it's support base. Even if a party is vehemently anti-democratic, they still need people to actually support them in the sense of "abiding by and carrying out their despot's orders"; it's the difference between fascism being the social order in NSDAP Germany, and Mosley's "British Union of Fascists" having to fight for table scraps of legitimacy, only ever hoping to be seen as anything more than agitators by the public at large.
      Which, in turn, brings out that "somewhat true" also means "largely untrue": Their incompetence gives the GOP an unlimited amount of evil they can ATTEMPT, but it never puts on the actual amount of evil they can actually get away with while still having any credible amount of support/power.
      And this is the threshold we're reaching - where lots of people who were formerly on board with the GOP and thus contributing to their overall effectiveness are deciding they've gone a bridge too far.

    I agree with Vaush's take. There is a lot of political science literature that suggests that American politics is largely defined by a "cultural cleavage." In essence, cultural issues mobilize voting bases in modern American politics. The data Vaush presents suggests that the GOP's go-to "woke" talking point is waning with its base. However, the GOP is good at jumping on whatever new right-wing moral outrage pops up, so this could quite easily change. Overall, each subsequent generation is more culturally progressive than the last, which spells bad news for the GOP in the long run.

    • @trianglemoebius
      @trianglemoebius ปีที่แล้ว

      This is true, but I feel like they already *have*, they've just become obsessed with shoving it under the "woke" umbrella for some reason.
      As Vaush pointed out, "woke" was originally a BLM thing. Then the trend because homophobia, so they added gays to "woke". Then trans people, etc etc. If anything, the issue is they've began making it less obvious when they're trend jumping. GOP voters historically liked it when the GOP would stay on-top of the "current issue", and now - even though they are - the fact that all of their new positions are just being made addendums to the "anti-woke agenda" makes it really hard to see such.

    • @andrewgreen5574
      @andrewgreen5574 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean the "woke" thing is so amorphous that it has very little meaning, and the trans scapegoat is such a niche talking point that it doesn't land well.
      Historically, conservatives pushed the idea of inclusion affecting personal rights, even with the bathroom talking points, but now they're attacking individual rights from a collective perspective.
      Another thing is that technology has changed a lot over the last 10-15 years, particularly the function of social media, so propaganda is being pushed constantly and changes rapidly. Where as in the past, the party would release a few talking points within msm and stick to it causing political cohesion.
      But I do think you're right not to underestimate Republicans.

    I think the difference between Trump and the later stuff is Trump was actually riding a popular trend, not trying to push it farther than his base wanted. He would dog whistle and conspiracy talk but never got specific beyond the point of leading into it (sometimes I'm not sure how much he even understands of the meaning behind some of the things he says), so it's less exhausting and committing in a way. Trump can make a show without asking for anything directly, hinting and allowing and letting fanatics do the rest, but allowing the rest of his base to pretend they weren't. Trump could be a lot of things to a lot of people.

It bears to mention for example that the term "woke" originated in the black community under a clearly positive, pro-black connotation. This might be one possible explanation for that confusion among black people, I might be completely off base tho.
