The Real Cause of Procrastination Explained

  • In order to overcome procrastination (or the passive putting off of important work even though you know it’s hurting your life) we need to understand why it happens. If you understand this, I promise that you’re about 90% there in terms of overcoming it. The other 10% is just a little tweaking and implementing of practical techniques.
So, here’s the first big piece of information I’m going to give you. The reason we procrastinate is because we have low self-esteem. I want you to remember this. It really is fundamentally important to keep in mind. Now, this low self-esteem is a problem because it leads to all sorts of dysfunctional behaviour, designed to further reinforce feelings of worthlessness and inferiority. And procrastination is simply one of the ways this is achieved. The real problem is that there’s so much bad advice out there in terms of what to do about the underlying low self-esteem. Very few people understand how it originates and how it is perpetuated. You may even be thinking that it’s practically impossible to fix it. I assure you it is entirely possible to fix it. When we do, the issue with procrastination becomes very easily understood and solved.

Thanks for watching. If you're short on time, skip to the 22:00 minute mark where the underlying cause is outlined. The earlier parts of the video talk about things to avoid when overcoming procrastination. If you found the video helpful, please leave a like and subscribe. Thanks, David

I cannot thank you enough for your channel. I've just signed up for your membership and can't wait to do the Procrastination course. I have been paralyzed and suffering from this beast of procrastination and experiencing the horrible feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness. A terrible spiral. And the worse it gets the more i punish myself by depriving myself of time for fun and rest. Thank you, thank you for offering this work to the world.

This video just blew my mind. I have been sitting for more than 20 minutes after watching it, as I am mentally digesting what I already knew very deep inside of me.
Other videos I have seen have been eye opening, but yours has been eye, mind and heart opening...so much that I am in awe at how peaceful I feel now by just understanding the real underlying cause.
So many things make sense about my life now. I am so glad an algorithm took me here, ironically while procrastinating, in search for a reason for my persistent procrastination.
    Thank you!!

100%. Its that little guilt voice that seems to taint it. We also stay in these things longer than we typically would when in avoidance mode. You're not alone my friend. Don't beat yourself up for this.

its amazing how after decades of using will power and hard work, this all eventually fails,.. eventually u feel hopeless and like life isnt worth living.... u feel numb and like u just want to get drunk on the couch... lol.. eventually u feel so exhausted, u cant do anything.. its amazing how ur mind can make ur body feel extremely exhausted, like ur dying...like each cell has a heavy weight on it... like each limb is so heavy....ur blood feels heavy... ur bones feel heavy.... everything is heavy... each step is a struggle ... like u have a 200 lbs on ur back

Yes, will power is typically not a sustainable long term solution I feel. Balance and compassion are very often overlooked in our conditioning. It leads to an exhaustion or psychological weariness.

I wish I came to this before. Unfortunately self-declared masters of productivity and time management are somehow more popular and famous than the professionals with degrees in the field ,who can actually help us become better individuals.
What I have learned from this video is that the underlying cause of procrastination is guilt, fear and old limiting beliefs that form themselves to due to procrastination, paradoxically.

This was really insightful and I think will help me immeasurably. Procrastination blights my life I’ve always known from past trauma that I had low self esteem but never saw the correlation between the two before. I absolutely crucify myself with guilt and berate myself for being a failure for not doing stuff I know I can do but just can’t at times. Can you do a video on techniques to overcome low self esteem and negative self talk? Anyway just wanted to say thank you, this was an excellent video.

A consequence of procrastination (guilt) is not the same as a payoff.
Guilt, which is self blame, is a desparate way of trying to motivate someone to take action.

    Hi David,
Thanks for your analysis; a lot to work on. Are your familiar with Badre`s "On Task"? Great book; but, funny thing, if you search the pdf file, you'll see that the words procrastinate/procrastination are not used once. Neurologically, the PFC (his acronym) is responsible for initiating and sustaining action. It's malfunction is the reason for self destructive behavior and though you won't find the word, procrastination. Would love to get your take on this.
