They are trying to “balance” the classes to make it “fair.” The Roman’s of course had no such concept, I’m not sure if they even had weight classes.
Edit: debunked by metatron, they did balance so longer match.

They're obviously all _relative._ Is an armored warrior "slow"? NFL pads are much lighter than armor, and some players are literally twice Metatron's size and strength, yet none would deny they are *slowER* in the pads than without.

Yeah. In a game, balancing is important because you want people to choose different styles while still having a roughly equal chance of winning overall. Real life doesnt work that way.

@@swissmilitischristilxxii3691 I'm not disagreeing with your point at all but pro wrestling is not exactly 'safe' either especially if you take into consideration how many lives were claimed from indirect causes (performance boosters, pain meds, underlying health conditions, etc) and the many people who have been seriously or even fatally injured due to botched moves and/or repeated blows to the head. WWE today is nowhere near not as bad as it was in the 20th century but it's still not without risk. WIth all that out of the way, the life of a gladiator was many levels of magnitude more dangerous than being a wrestler/MMA fighter in modern times, even at it's most extreme modern iteration pre-21st century it still pale in comparison to the brutality of ancient MMA/wrestling (pankration) which was still safer than being a gladiator. Hopefully that puts things into perspective for people who thinks that gladiatorial games were something akin to the type of silly performance act you'd see in a classical theater.

I have a tiny amount of experience with swords, shields and armor. I was in the Society for Creative Anacronism at least two complete style changes ago.
I have always been amused by people who have never worn armor stating that armor and shields were extremely cumbersome.
You haven't seen agility until you have seen Lysandros di Spartica chase a squirrel with his bronze shortsword in a campus coffee shop. Lysander was impressive but the squirrel was a lot faster.
He had a bronze curaiss, bronze greeves, bronze forearm guards, a bronze helmet and a red cape. ( not the squirrel)
The only time I saw full plate in use Lord Brightangel was probinly more mobile than in his street clothes. The man inside the plate was a 60 ish college professor so not very fast normally. He didn't move any slower than he usually did. His opponent couldn't get in a solid enough blow to count and he couldn't land a blow at all. By mutual agreement they called it a draw when thay got too tired.
I can verify that a helmet can make it hard to breath. I made my helmet Kabutoshi myself. By the way I didn't intend "fourth helmet" I wore the helmet of death, the wearers.
Like many of us I started with a freon can. That is a reenforced streel cylinder with round ends. Just cut off one end. Cut air holes as desired, add a chin strap and stuff padding inside. They did prevent head injuries, mostly.
Mine would tilt when hit on the top of the head making paddin added for the nose after putting it on. I explained the need for nose protection when I loaned it to a much better fighter than myself. He insisted that he followed my instructions but he got his nose broken. After strenuous arguing I got my helmet unbaned for my use only.
It is unlikely that anyone would actually suffocate unless he refused to pause and breath, which people did even in duels or battles. Thats why formations rotatedvthe front line. Nevertheless a full face helmet was harder to breath in than out of.

Infantry and other soldiers today are trained in the use of air-sealed face masks (against chemical, biological, and nuclear agents - CBN) plus helmets for combat operations. Many also wear/carry tens of kilograms of armor, full CBN protective suit, and equipment and weaponry. In non-combat environments, annual recertification requires wearing all this kit for at least 8 hours, sometimes (though rarely) while engaged in strenuous field activities. I can sympathize with the plight of the gladiator fighting for their reputation or their life while encased in various bits of armor and an enclosed bronze helmet with limited air exchange and visibility.
BTW, fully armored, mounted knights of medieval Europe could vault into the saddle from a running start.

Not exactly. Due to a phenomenon called "time dilation" you would seem to yourself faster than you are, and this effect would become more extreme the closer you approach the speed c of light with respect to a reference clock U.
For example, at c minus 2cm⁄s, you'd cover roughly a light day per second of your proper time while also jetting forward in U coordinate time by a day every proper second.

I think the biggest trouble with language here is the use of comparative words vs absolute words.
Things like the "helmet has poor vision" can be true compared to someone with no helmet but untrue compared to a different helmet.
Or "needed to be strong to wear xyz armour" might be untrue because a weak person could easily wear it, but true in that a strong person would have a big advantage after 5 minutes of strenuous fighting.
Even the way I used "absolute words" is kinda confusing because all descriptions are technically comparative, even if it's using the best possible human as a comparison.
(I did a terrible job explaining that, but for example saying 'xyz had good vision' is implying 'good vision *for a human* , because they're obviously not meaning good vision compared to an eagle or something. )

He clearly pushes that idea that gladiators were trying to kill one another. Considering that it wasn't the case, some of his observations make no sense (like stabbing through the eye holes), and I assume the weapons weren't sharp either, possibly even blunt (are there any sources on that?). Less maintenance costs and less risk to get your opponent's expensive slave (or occasional free man) killed.
As a RPG player, I can't help but find this class system they had for real (if somewhat staged) combat extremely cool.

    • @Altarahhn

I feel that it's specifically _because_ they used weapons that we automatically assume that the objective was a duel to the death. At least, when compared to modern Boxing and MMA, which is unarmed and has rules (not that Gladiatorial matches _didn't_ them, of course).
Thus, we seem to assume that Boxing or unarmed combat sports are "nonlethal," whereas adding a weapon instantly means that somebody *has* to die at the end. A logical fallacy, to be sure, but one that I feel is quite common. Because humans love making these sorts of categorical statements. You know?

I have to disagree with about the Secutor's helmet. Although different designs can alleviate the problem, atmospheric airflow may not be enough for sufficient respiration during strenuous activity. It may be enough for breathing at rest, but under stress the wearer will consume more air. Not just for oxygen-rich air to get into the helmet, but also to prevent a buildup of air that is less ideal for respiration. The buildup of moisture inside the helmet is also a concern if the wearer is prone to that sort of discomfort on top of his labored breathing.

I like to use the image of that classic golden hued bronze glinting in sunlight when describing how some early armies would have looked.
People today hear "bronze" and immediately think of that modern flat, subdued bronze and it doesn't do any justice to how good bronze armor would have looked when maintained well.

I will say, Helmet Horror is a thing, due to poor ventilation in some helms unless you breathe slow, complete breaths to purge the C02 you will build up a mild oxygen debt and become more prone to panic. The more sealed with a larger internal volume the worse it is, since complete breaths are less able to purge CO2.

I think the Provocators cardiophylax needs to be put into context of who the opponents of Rome are. One of the main rivals of Rome were the city states of Greece. Hellenic soldiers mainly utilized hoplite formations, you have a large shield (in classic hoplite fashion, not the macedonian style) to protect yourself with and a long spear to have reach advantage. The maximum reach of a spear thrust is at shoulder height as any lower than that, you get reach reduction due to angling or bending the elbow, which naturally means the maximum reach is at neck/upper thoracic region. Of course if you could afford more protection, you would also have abdominal protection, but against spear enemies doesn't it just make sense to protect the most likely areas they'll hit once the head is covered? Got to remember that Roman style fighting was sort of an anomaly in the grand scope of things, most civilizations used spears as the main battlefield weapon for infantry with swords/daggers as sidearms. There's also the argument that some historians point out that underhand gripping the spear might be way more prevalent than we usually imagine, and if that's the case the abdominal region would be a highly awkward area to stab towards. Also against projectiles, it's a no brainer that protection for the upper thoracic area is way more useful than protection at the abdominal area.
