In the early days, before the hypogeum was constructed, they "enacted" sea battles by flooding the arena. You might hear some people say we don't know how they did it... Which is laughable because the Colosseum was built over a riverbed and they had issues with drainage which required some pretty creative solutions to fix.

Using the Attic standard, a single talent was 6,000 denarii or 240 Aurei. Each aureus weighed about 8 grams of gold (I'm using the 1st century BC as an example) so 240 x 8 = 1,920 grams or just over 61.73 ounces (modern troy oz). Current price of gold is 1,984 x 61.73 = 122,472.32. Now multiply that x 30 you get 3,674,169.60 for a gladiatorial bout.

    Minute 02:00:
Just one small addition that maybe not everybody knows:
Yeah, it was about enhancing YOUR status.
But in Rome you could enhance your status, by enhancing the deeds your ancestors did.
So if you wanted to improve your political power, you definitly could praise your ancestors to achieve this goal.
Because Romans put a lot of trust in "bloodlines" (which is kind of ironic, because adoption was absolutly common and not frowned about at all. So blood was way less important in this regard than for nearly every other society)
Most people believed, that if your ancestor did great things, this was a sure sign that the current offpsring of this familiy would do great things too.
(e.g. fighting in Africa "required" a general from the Scipio familiy. Because a lot of Romans thought, that only a Scipio would be able to achieve victory in Africa)
During elections, candidates often presented what their ancestors did. And often a consul was elected not because the one standing for the office was the "best" candidate, but because his ancestors entitled him to it, making him in the view of the voters the best choice because his ancestors were good consuls.

  • @jemborg

Good show Metatron, always entertaining and informative.
Could I add that the gladiator fighting was majorly concerned with the serious business of gambling? This made the performers akin to racing horses today. The thing was to put on a good show. So it was also like Rock and Roll Wrestling. The gladiators would play to the crowd, beat their chests, ham it up, get them going. And they were fat. Yes they were. Barley bellies. So they could get cut, bleed etc. I'm not saying it was fake fighting but putting on a show for the mob was an acknowledged part so allowances for it were made. It also guaranteed your survival if you lost.

Excellent video as always. @Metatron we now know, as you mentioned, that Gladiator diets were high in barley, legumes etc , but this revelation has given rise to the idea that as a result of this carb rich diet, Gladiators were almost certainly "fat" , with some saying they were ideally overweight so as to have an extra layer of protection against weapons and strikes.
I have a hard time believing this to be the reality, and an even harder time believing your average modern combat athlete surpasses the physical fitness and conditioning of the classical Gladiator.

Hi ! I love your videos and your work !
Just one thing that made me laugh. Probably because my english is not perfect. At 15'29, you say : there was a gladiatoral event that included a "whole elephant" !
Do you think other event could include only part of elephants ? ;)

Id be really interested if you made a video talking about the ethics of museums such as The British Museum.

Native American history is overlooked quite a lot and I don't know much about it either so I'd like to see something like that too please 🙂

At first I was going to say don’t you mean commodus fought in the arena ? But then I looked it up and yep , Caligula did indeed too ! Others too ! That’s why I love these videos so much , I always learn something new and I know metatron actually takes personal accountability and would admit when he’s wrong .

Metatron,if i don't remember wrong you trained Kyokushin. One thing i am interested is how unarmed martial arts flow into armed combat.
Have you ever considered talking about this?

I was under the empression that it was Commodus who fought as a gladiator, didn’t know “Little Boots” was up to it too, I thought he just upped the cruelty, not taking part.

For the modern version of Caligula fighting in the arena we will have Elon musk VS Mark Zuckerberg in mma doing the spinning kicks you wanted 10:10

You can technically count gladiatorial fights as similar to HEMA exhibitions or Martial Arts Sparring Performances! Its the closest one we have today!

The same as the Greek Olympic wrestlers, Pankration they called it, nothing changes we just have more rules and less injuries

Great video and very informative. Can you explore the history of the duel, from the early judicial duels in the early ages to the duels of judgment and into the duels of honor?

Thank you for mentioning the gladiatrixes. You should do a video on them. They are a fascinating group. Just seeing the fact that they did exist and how they went about performing is interesting. (Warrior women are great in my opinion. Just like the Amazonian Warriors.)
