Do you want to improve your pronunciation? I have launched my British English (Modern RP) pronunciation course! I’ll train you to read phonetic transcriptions, and produce each sound that comprises modern received pronunciation. I’ll also teach you how to implement the correct use of intonation, stress, rhythm, connected speech, and much more. We’ll compare similar sounds, and look at tricky topics like the glottal stop and the dark L. I've worked on this for YEARS and I am so happy to finally let you take the course!
I’m aware of the error - Ukraine has no article. Sorry for any offence caused - this part has been removed from the video. When I was a child I had a talking globe - you could touch it with a pen and it would say the country name. For some reason this globe used an article with Ukraine, and I learnt to say it that way. I am now fully aware that there is NO article. Lucy x

Hello lovely students! When I originally published this video in 2019, I made a mistake. I had always learnt that Ukraine included an article, like The United Kingdom. I put it in this video, and naturally, my Ukrainian students were pretty upset, so I made the video private. I have now edited out this section of the video at 21:40, but I couldn't remove the text without removing the entire list of exceptions, so here they are:
    The United Kingdom,
    The United States
    The Philippines,
    The Czech Republic
I hope that clears up any doubts!

by the way - if you are watching within 4 hours of the edit, it might not be loaded yet and you might still see the mistake! It will be gone as soon as TH-cam processes the edit

I found your lesson quite interesting and, of course, very informative for learners. Thank you for it.
One thing that you didn't explain was the usage of 'a' and 'an' preceeding words starting with 'h'. For example, 'a hospital' and 'an hotel', which depends upon the accent, or pronunciation, of the word.
Shall be thankful for a small lesson on the same. This is mainly for the people who learn English as a second or third language.
      Regards.
      I. Sengupta.

      Let me try to help:
Then is usually a comparison of time like, “I will do this then that,” than is a comparison of object, “ I would rather do this than that!”
There and their is simple. There is a point of time or place, like, “it’s over there!”
Their is the possessive of they like, “Its their ball.”

It is difficult to force a name or the grammar of the name of a country in another language when that language has a name for that country and the language is not an official language of the country. Ivory Coast tried to get the English name of the country changed to the French name with French spelling and pronunciation. (Côte d'Ivoire). You won't hear many English speakers doing that.

    Interesting lesson!
We also use 'the' when we refer to a specific group of people, such as 'the blind' or 'the deaf'.
By the way, when we talk about going to the hospital/school/university/prison/church we use 'the' if we go there for other purposes, for example, to work or for a visit. But if someone stays there, for instance - as a patient or as a student, we do not use 'the'. 😊

    Thank you for the tips!
Pronunciation I think that is fairly easy for us Greeks because we do not have "heavy" pronunciation in Greek like...for example Russians or Spanish people!
So we can easily learn the pronunciation of another language!
My teacher at the first grades of school told us "learn first the correct form(grammar) and then practise your pronunciation!"
    Big mistake!
I agree with you! If you get used to a bad pronunciation then it is much more difficult to change it!
I struggled a lot trying to talk correctly and your videos is such a great help, as I want to learn the British pronunciation and not those horrible American sounds...
    Thanks again!🙏

Hello! I'm from Ukraine and I'm an English teacher. We don't use the indefinite article "the" before the word Ukraine. The same is with Russia or Belarus. Maybe it's because Ukraine is the republic. We should use the definite article when we use such words. as "a republic, kingdom, federation". For example, the republic Belarus

"The Ukraine" is incorrect both grammatically and politically, says Oksana Kyzyma of the Embassy of Ukraine in London.
"Ukraine is both the conventional short and long name of the country," she says. "This name is stated in the Ukrainian Declaration of Independence and Constitution."
The use of the article relates to the time before independence in 1991, when Ukraine was a republic of the Soviet Union known as the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, she says. Since then, it should be merely Ukraine.

There are different versions of English in different countries (Australia, NZ, US, India and so on), so as different russan languages in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus'. For example, the name of my country in Russian Russian is Byelarussia. And nobody argue about it. You may call "Ukraine" and Englishmen can call "The Ukraine". There is no contradiction.
