My answers to quiz: 1) You COULDN'T HAVE seen him in the supermarket, he was with me..! 2) Yes, I know, I COULD'VE studied last night, but I did escape room instead. 3) I WOULD'VE been happy to have you stay, why didn't you ask? 4) You SHOULDN'T HAVE left the party so early it was really rude. 5) If you had trained more thoroughly you WOULD'VE completed the marathon. Thank you Lucy for clearing doubts 😊
I guess (could have) would also work here. In case of (should have) it means what I was supposed to do in the past. (I know I was supposed to study but I didn't). And for (could have), I know it was possible (there was an opportunity) for me to study last night but I didn't. Which is the better fit? I don't know. I need more context to decide that. If anyone thinks that without the need of more context one of them is a better fit could you please explain why? (Would have) might also kind of work. It would sound like there is an implied condition."(Had I not done an escape room) I would have studied last night". But I guess the other 2 fit better. It all depends on context(: If anything is wrong please someone correct me.
I have a feeling that the word (instead) points more towards (should have) instead of (could have). I don't know why and I don't have any grammatical base to support it. And it doesn't quite make sense. Could anyone comment on that? Sorry for the messy writing. I am thinking as I am writing(:

Make some sentences for guiding you. --- should have/ should've/ shouldn't have 1. You failed the test. You should've practiced more. (something that was a good idea but we didn't do) 2. You failed the test. You shouldn't have partied till dawn. (something that wasn't a good idea but we did) 3. I should've told you the truth, but I thought it was likely to hurt you. (something that is supposed to happen by now but it isn't) --- could have/ could've/ couldn't have 1. You could've practiced more, but you partied till dawn. (something that was "possible" to do but we didn't do) 2. I couldn't have left any earlier. ~ It was impossible for me to leave any earlier. (something that was "impossible" to do even if we wanted to do) 3. Why is Jenny so late today? Jenny could've missed the bus. (making a guess about something happened in the past) --- would have/ would've / wouldn't have 1. If you had practiced more, you would've passed the test. (positive: imagining an outcome of the situation that didn't happen) 2. If you hadn't partied last night, you wouldn't have failed the test. (negative: imagining...) 3. Jenny would've informed us her delay, but her phone was out of battery. (something that we "wanted" to do but we didn't do)
Hello, What language do you therefore speak? Indonesian ( Bahasa Indonesia ) whithout any doubt but perhaps do you speak as well another language such as Javanese, actually it is quite interesting to know (if you don't mind about)
You *couldn't have* seen him in the supermarket, he was with me. I think you would not have seen him in super market, he was with me. Because could have is possibility in the past.imaginary condition get other result
@@veereshchary1392 Actually the conversation indicates past only... When someone says, I saw him. The other person replies, No you couldn't have seen him because he was with me all the time... So no possibility of seeing him in the market... Couldn't have is the correct one..
i just clicked on the video to repass this modal verbs, but when you said that "would have", "should have" and "could have", are used for past, something in my head just did click and now i get it, finally, i came for copper and i found gold.

Make some sentences for guiding you.

1. You failed the test. You should've practiced more. (something that was a good idea but we didn't do)
2. You failed the test. You shouldn't have partied till dawn. (something that wasn't a good idea but we did)
3. I should've told you the truth, but I thought it was likely to hurt you. (expressing my regret)

5. Jenny should've arrived by now. (something that is supposed to happen by now but it isn't)
--- could have/ could've/ couldn't have
1. You could've practiced more, but you partied till dawn. (something that was "possible" to do but we didn't do)
2. I couldn't have left any earlier. ~ It was impossible for me to leave any earlier. (something that was "impossible" to do even if we wanted to do)
3. Why is Jenny so late today? Jenny could've missed the bus. (making a guess about something happened in the past)
--- would have/ would've / wouldn't have
1. If you had practiced more, you would've passed the test. (positive: imagining an outcome of the situation that didn't happen)

You *couldn't have* seen him in the supermarket, he was with me.
Yes, I know I *should have* studied last night, but I did an escape room instead. *COULD HAVE* is the 2nd option
I *would have* been happy to have you stay. Why didn't you ask?
You *shouldn't have* left the party so early! It was really rude
If you had trained more thoroughly, you *would have* completed the marathon
Same answers for me :-)
I'm not a native English speaker, so what does it mean in, sentence number 2, "I did an escape room instead"? Does it referendum to a game?
Same answers for me too.
Great english class, Lucy! Greetings from Paraguay!! 🇵🇾❤🇬🇧
I actually want to know this, Thanks ❤
me 2 ..at its time..i was thinking about it...i open my phone and i found the notification i was so happy about it
i just clicked on the video to repass this modal verbs, but when you said that "would have", "should have" and "could have", are used for past, something in my head just did click and now i get it, finally, i came for copper and i found gold.
