- The golden age of fighting games was kickstarted by the release of Street Fighter II and coincided with the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Of course, this meant a bunch of companies were scrambling to release fight sticks for the SNES to capitalize on the hype of SFII. In this video, I take a look at 6 arcade sticks for the SNES and give my opinion on them.

@@SodaCanTabletThe Japanese version also has genuine arcade controls and a special port for a wireless adapter. Weirdly enough, the batteries go into the stick and not the wireless adapter. The American version has a blanking plate where the battery door would be.
My first SNES stick was the awful Quickshot followed by the Fighter Stick SN. Fighter Stick SN was basically a Super Advantage with the proper layout.
OHHHH holy crap that makes a lot of sense. I saw the blank plates for the battery and wireless adapters and I was wondering what they were. Thank you for letting me know about that. I've seen the Quickshot does not look good at all. I've seen the Fighter Stick SN too and I like that it at least has proper button placements.
9:54 you see where it says CPS FIGHTER SET at the bottom there? that's so you could one click set the controls to CPS Fighter style, and that same option is in all the other SNES SF2 games. Another cool feature of that stick is that you could swap the cable and use the stick in 2 button mode on NES, beats the hell out of the NES advantage. Also I thought the layout was kinda dumb at first too, but then I played through Megaman X with it and realized how easy it was to do every combination of jump/charge/dash which is kind of difficult on a normal pad.

I knew there was one for the Sega Genesis, but I didn't know there was a cable for the NES. And I can see how this sort of layout is more universally compatible with games and not just fighting games. Hope you enjoyed the video!

Sega fanboys always say their 6-button pad was better for Street Fighter. Sure, but if you took it seriously, you had the Capcom stick.
Some of the Sega options included a white version of Capcom's CPS stick specifically for MD.
Also a variant of the C&L Controls stick called the Arcadian. Pretty similar to expect except the start button was a switch rather than a button for some reason.
We had to beg mom to buy us a 2 six button controllers let alone a fight stick.
@madspunky Haha yeah I definitely prefer the stick as well, but I think it's cool to see people succeed with what they have. Players like Punk and Anakin being as successful as they are using pad is pretty inspiring.
@kabbusses Ohhh yeah I really like the color scheme of the MD version of the CFPS. Also the Arcadian looks interesting. Looks a lot smaller compared to the SNES version.

So many good memories fighting my older brother in SF2 back in the day!
We just had the standard controllers, they were aight.
I think the debate of using standard controllers vs sticks is really interesting. People who mostly played at home got used to using the D Pad and preferred that and vice versa, and today there's a lot of fighting game pros like Punk that prefer pad to sticks because they grew up with standard controllers. I also started off with standard controllers but grew more used to stick.
@@SodaCanTablet they got use to it because everything in the west was fking expensive and alot of these arcade controllers weren't mass advertised, they were rarely sold especially western shops because they don't get the good stuff (at least not at places like eg australia) i was surprised even the psx had a arcade stick, you definitely couldn't get that at a regular retail store that sells consoles/tvs etc (maybe game stores) even to this day those retail stores only sell regular controllers not arcade sticks, also the west are slow and hate adapting to technology, hk had vcd and svcd, the west didn't adapt to it and skipped from vhs to dvd

Capcom Fighter Power Stick is so underrated. Although you have to adjust the SF2 button options, I think they went with the layout so it could work well with regular titles. Also, as a bonus, it came with a NES cord option. It works well for playing the Mega Man series.
Yeah upon reflection, I actually think the layout they went with is a lot better than what I suggested haha. Because like you said, it works a lot better for regular titles like MegaMan. Since that was also made by Capcom, the layout was definitely intentional. Hope you enjoyed the video!

The one you saw is the Ticket Blitz arcade game (from around 2015 i think). That Monkey Ball stick is from the original 90's arcade game

Y B A ; L X R makes sense for most games honestly, it most accurately represents the controller IMO, and to be fair SF2:HF does have completely custom controls. Anyway, great video, and super awesome that you made your own fight stick. Yes i'd love a build vod 😍
Yeah you make a good point. Since most games didn't let you customize controls, it makes sense to make the layout work well with the majority of games and just let SFII controls be customizable. I can imagine for platformers like Mario, it'll be comfortable to be able to run with your index finger and jump with your middle finger, with the Y and B buttons on the same row. As someone who grew up with the SUPER Advantage...it was all I knew and I made it work for me. U.K. was lucky to get the much improved Score Master fight stick! Later in life, I modded my SUPER Advantage with Sanwa buttons and I microswitched the stick.
As a North American boy, ball tops are okay, but I'm bat top all the way and fortunately most of fight sticks of the era can have their tops swapped out for a bat!
Great Job on the DIY sticks you created. Many people go crazy with sticks, but I'm much more impressed when people "re-create" existing sticks from the past.

I think I was spoiled from using the HORI RAP4 as my first stick because I don't think I can get used to the Super Advantage. And that's so cool you modded your Super Advantage! Do you still have it?
I love that controllers have regional preference to them. It's really interesting. I noticed in your previous comments that you wrote some Korean too, so I wonder if that also adds to your preference for bat tops haha.

And yes as it pertains to Korean!! My fiancée is Korean so I've learned the language for her and her family! I noticed your rice cooker in a prior video too..haha!
Their sticks (levers) are fantastic! Years ago there was a "re-release" of the SNES Score Master rebranded as "Emio Edge SUPER Joystck" fir the Super NES mini (They released an NES variant too).
Modded it with sanwa buttons and a "Samducksa 309 Crown" and couldn't be happier!

I didn't think the Super Advantage had enough space in it to be modified so that's really cool. I haven't used Samducksa sticks before, but a controller I built for a friend used Sanducksa buttons and those were really nice.
I saw the Emio stick before it looks really cool! I really like that they use good parts. Kind of surreal in a way to see the retro styling and the modern buttons, but it looks good.

Long story short-ish...nothing was just plug and play and swappable.
I had to sand out the button holes to 24mm. Then after manually pinning out the main chip that handled all the button inputs, I drilled 24mm holes directly into the board. Then with my pinout, I wired all the buttons to traces that the original buttons fed through and my buttons worked!
For the stick, I strategically cut the white plastic base that the stick ridess along with a dremel. I cut spaces just enough to fit microswitches where the rubber membranes were.
The stick is stock Advantage...but now it swivels and rocks on the microswitches instead of rubber pad.
Put a bat top on it, hot glued everything and with luck...the bottom base plate closed! Success!

Interesting fact for those that didn't know: The Capcom Fighter Power Stick is the same stick that was also made for the extremely rare Capcom CPS Changer, a console that Capcom made that was similar to the Neo Geo AES that utilized the Capcom CP System arcade hardware, or CPS1. The CPS Changer used Super Nintendo controllers (included the Fighter Power Stick) and it worked more like a Supergun than a home console, and it was sold only via mail order, which why it's so rare. Only 11 games were made for it, including an extremely rare version of Street Fighter Zero/Alpha
Oh huh I didn't know the CPS Changer used SNES controllers. Interesting that it worked like a supergun. Does that mean it takes JAMMA boards? It seems like it was more like the AES like you said since if it just used JAMMA boards, it would have more than 11 games compatible with it.

One stick I really like on SNES/Genesis is the DOCS arcade stick. It uses a pretty decent Seimitsu clone lever with a square gate and it actually uses IBM Model M-esque buckling springs for the buttons, which is super unique and actually feels quite nice.

Great look at SNES sticks. Hadn't seen some of these before! The button layout with L/R in the top-right and top left, and the SNES Advantage's weird layout is explained by one thing, I've found: The peripheral makers didn't want to simply make sticks that only work for a select few fighting games, and didn't think parents would buy them for their kids if they only worked well with that select handful of titles. With the L/R spaced on either edge, you could still get away with playing games that didn't allow button rebinding and relied on the positional aspect of those- think Mario Kart and F-Zero, for instance. Fighting games all allowed the buttons to be re-bound but a large amount of the games on the system don't have these options, so it was logical from a sales standpoint to maintain this positional layout for folks that wanted to play things besides fighters with these somewhat-expensive peripherals. Cheers
derp mario kart is a bad example because both buttons jump/slide the same, but you get the idea- many games used positional left/right actions on L/R.
Yeah in retrospect, I think that was the right move since like you said, it makes the controllers compatible with a wider range of games and fighting game buttons could be remapped anyways. I think a good example is Mega Man since that was also made by Capcom, and the layout makes it easier to jump and shoot with your middle and index fingers respectively. If it was in a more fight stick focused layout, the buttons would be on top of each other rather than next to each other.

Thank you! As for the stick, the most likely thing is that it's just dirty. I'd check this video out to see how you can disassemble it and do a deep cleaning. If it's a different reason, taking it apart will still let you see what's causing the problem. Might be that the spring popped out of place or something.

I just installed a JLF stick on my 8bitdo arcade stick and it came with 2 identical plastic washers for. I’m wondering, do you prefer to keep both washers on the top side of the controller?

One of the SF2 ports had a pre-set configuration for this stick specifically, where L and R are jab and fierce respectively.
Yeah someone pointed it out in another comment I didn't notice it. If you press the button at the bottom of the screen at 9:54 that says CPS Fighter Set it automatically sets the buttons to match the Capcom Power Stick which is what the CPS stands for.
That's exactly what I plan to do. Recently, I customized my Neo Geo ASP, I swapped out the stock parts with Sanwa stick and buttons. Now I want to build a second arcade stick by using its still working stock parts and a SNES PC-controller PCB. I have all I need, so why not! 🤷♂️
Dang I love Neo Geo. One day I'd love to get an MVS or AES. And that sounds cool! Let us know how that goes. I'd really love to see how it turns out.
I did sacrifice a snes controller for a custom arcade stick, with dual output (+ a brook UFB) but the controller pcb didn't like much being along the brook pcb, played for a good time like this but then I got an brook wingman adapter which accepts many controllers, even some wireless. If you already have an arcade stick I would go for it, also you can use it on a NES too.

Ohhh that's really cool. The dual output reminds me of those third party controllers that had 2 controller plugs so you could use it with different consoles. Using an arcade stick on the NES seems great since there's a lot of arcade type games on it. And thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.

Some of these sticks look absolutely nuts. Nice job with your custom one though, looks very professional. One other SNES stick out there worth looking into is the HORI Fighting Stick HSJ-12, which I think was only released in Japan. It's got an all metal shell with a nice HORI-branded stick and buttons. Even has turbo switches. Great video!

Asciiware Fighter Stick SN has always been my go to SNES controller for SF2. Comfortable layout and appropriately responsive.
Yeah it's definitely a way better layout than the Super Advantage. It's just too bad the stick is also squishy.

I found one called the top fighter QJ and its all metal and has actual clicky arcade buttons. No idea when it came out but the thing is built like a tank

Yeah I would've if I had them. I've tried the Fighter Stick SN and I didn't think it was too interesting, but I've never heard of the PsychoPad KO and it looks super cool. I'll definitely try to get it if I make a part 2. Hope you enjoyed the video!

Haha yeah I feel like it's because this is before good quality sticks were common, but with Playstation onwards, there were easy to find sticks that are actually good so there wasn't really a point to making your own. Hope you enjoyed the video!
I own the Capcom stick but I just have trouble with joysticks generally as they move when I play and it throws me off. I have an arcade cabinet which doesn't move and only then can I play well.
Ah yeah I'm guessing the spring in the lever isn't stiff enough for your liking. I think you can replace them with stiffer ones, but honestly if you have a full arcade cabinet it's probably better to just play it on there haha. That's awesome though. I have some non fighting game arcade cabinets, but I want to get the Neo Geo fighting game ones some day. Hope you enjoyed the video!
The SN Programmable stick can rotate it's face buttons, that's why it's a raise circle.

That is why for classic Mortal Kombat on the SNES and Sega Genesis need to be made by the fans. Because MK is very different layout of buttons. The center button is to bl;ock, the bottom right of your joystick have a button that is he run button. Again very diferent from other fightig game button layouts. Also the CAPCOM arcade stick is perfect to play other games too. I know the layout is odd. Most SNES games uses the Y, B, and A buttons As the X button is usually for some sub weapon or something that you usually never use. The L and R buttons are usually rarely use. But when it does, you usually press it one or some few times. So the layout of Y, B, and A for the buttom, while the top is L, X, and R are in the top. IT works. Trust me I played a lot of games with that stick. You rearely will ever use L, X, and R buttons. By the way that Capcom layout is almost the same layout front buttons use on the Gamecube. However it's B, a and X for the botton, the top have one more button the Y button. The Left trigger and right trigger are analog, and one small Z button. Wait... where there ever any fighting sticks release on the gamecube? The N64 fightstick sucks.
I never played MK on the traditional MK stick layout but yeah fanmade is prob the best for that series in the earlier consoles. The Capcom stick layout makes more sense with that explanation. Especially for Mega Man since that was also made by Capcom. Shoot with index and jump with middle. Apparently there was a fight stick for GameCube made by HORI for Soul Calibur II. Seems pretty rare though. There was also one made by Nuby but those don't seem too good. The N64 fight stick I actually own 2 kinds. 1 is the more common Arcade Shark, but I also have the Mad Catz Dual Arcade stick which I made a video on. Don't worry, you didn't miss much with the c&l sticks. They used the Happ Ultimate lever & buttons, which were extremely stiff and uncomfortable compared to the later Happ Competition ones. Surprisingly, they had quick disconnects instead of soldered wires like the old MAS sticks had. There was a c&l genesis & snes combo stick too, but it was even worse because there was no room for your wrists at all.
But it is an easy drop in with a comp stick i got one. def not worth paying over 100 bucks for just to mod tho

I have a couple of "Top Fighter" joyticks with all metal casings. I feel like the joysticks on those are a bit awkward feeling, but there is something nice about, well, the all-metal casing.
I would like to try a Hori Fighting Stick SFC sometime.

i know you're still covering mostly 5th 4th gen gaming accs but i was wondering if down the line you could do a vid on PS1/PS2 sticks ive never heard much about what was good what wasnt and alot of people have said sticks were very gimmicky back then i think it would be great to have a resource to look upon to know and understand whats good as someone who wants to buy one for that gen of fighting games
Ohhh yeah I currently only have 1 arcade stick for the PS2 but if I get more, I will definitely consider making a similar video for the PS1/2. One stick I can recommend for PS2 is the 10th anniversary Tekken stick. It's made by HORI and I honestly didn't buy any more sticks after getting this one because I love it so much. 13:36 the Customization is an Extension of their original Purpose. These are called Fight sticks but they are Arcade Sticks & Buttons which were designed to be modular to be able to simply replace parts for commercial use.
So the benefits to customization is just the DNA of these parts. Their existence extends beyond the FGC and pre dates it, it isn't a benefit due to the FGC.

The QJ SN stick is my favorite of these purely for how gimmicky it is. I'd be down for someone to make the ultimate version of it with modern improvements.

As for a modern version, I feel like since you can program macros already, it would definitely be possible to also program combos and lever macros. And thank you! I had one that worked on both SNES and Genesis (it had swappable cords) that I never see anyone mention. I have no idea what the brand was. I just remember it was kind of purple. Six button Street Fighter style layout.
Is it the Arcade Pro by InterAct? That one has a swappable cord and half the buttons are purple.

I don't think it used microswitches or anything nice like that but the layout was perfect and it worked decently enough.

By now somebody has already explained the CPS switch in the options, so I'm gonna ask have you looked into D-Pad options for fighters? Of course Sega has their own first party solution, but I also have all 3 verions of the Capcom Soldier Pad. While most of my findings does say it's Capcom's pad even having the logo molded onto it, some packaging of the Japanese only super famicom version says it's by Asciiware. It's a lot more comfortable than it looks.
I haven't looked too much into d-pad options for fighters, but if you have suggestions on any that's interesting I'd love to hear them. I know there are interesting ones like the SEGA Saturn controller for PS2, ASCII PAD for the Dreamcast and PS1, and the HORI 2way Fighting Commander for PS1. I don't have a Capcom pad but I really want one. I like that it combines the feel of using a standard controller for your left hand since it has a d-pad with the feel of using an arcade style controller for your right hand since your fingers are laid flat on the 6 buttons. I'm guessing the AsciiWare version is either ripping the Capcom design or maybe they had a deal at one point that AsciiWare could sell the design so that Capcom wouldn't have to do the manufacturing part.
@@SodaCanTablet Well I can't recommend anything good outside if what you mentioned and I know from firsthand experience the GamePad 6 by Performance was uncomfortable even if you had a callus on your thumb. Anything on the Nintendo side of things I can't really say since I've found what I've been looking for.

The SNES outside the USA looked like the Famicom. So It's also the "SNES" design. I don't know why it was changed for the US market.
I guess they thought the US market needed something edgy so they made the console into a block. Kinda reminds me of how they make Kirby look angry in the US releases haha.
@@SodaCanTablet Yes that's definitely one of the reasons! I just remembered I THINK another reason was to reduce American kids spilling their drinks on top. They would put them on top the NES. (Was it to make it easier to balance drinks or stop them? I haven't seen a US model in real life to try). But yes they also thought the Super Famicom design looked childish compared to the US market Genesis. I still can't get used to the US design though lol

I haven't played SF6 so I'm not entirely sure, but it seems like the modern controls is pretty similar to the macros. The special macros are like the special move button and the combo macro is similar to the assisted combo feature. I hope I get to try SF6 one day to see haha. And thank you for the support! The best snes fighter controller was a fight pad by Capcom (I think?) that came out around the time of Killer Instincts release
Pistol grip under the directional pad (left hand) and flat right with 6button layout. L&r to the right of Y and B, default SF2 layout worked great, and you could keyboard tap with your right hand while pistol gripping the left

oh man that asciiware stick... and worst of all they put that layout over the SF2 arcade control panel like it was an exact match in the magazine ads! like who are they trying to fool with that stuff?! I did own the genesis version of the CPS fighter, was a pretty solid stick for playing special champion edition, that's for sure!
YEAH I remember that ad. They really thought we were that stupid HAHA. The Genesis version of the CPSF looks sick I think it looks cooler than the SNES version. One thing I think is interesting is how Genesis was associated with black coloring and SNES usually with the off white, but with this it was reversed. Hope you enjoyed the video!

For the Wii I really want to get the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom stick. I don't personally have experience with PS3 nor 360 sticks, but I know the Mad Catz sticks for them were very highly praised. They were used by a lot of pros during EVO and stuff.

Also, when you showed inside the joystick of the Capcom stick, the stick itself was a sanwa evident by the sanwa text embedded inside the joystick case thing.
fascinating! that capcom stick seems to use a similar omron switch (with the metal fingers) to what semitsu switched their levers to a few years back, when matsushita/panasonic stopped making microswitches. in my experience with a newer semitsu ls-32, switches like those require just a teeny bit more force than the ones without the metal finger as seen in the sanwa JLF. not a major difference, and absolutely not a difference that would make one "better" at any given game, it's more like the difference between normal green tea and genmaicha: the difference is there, and noticable, but relatively inconsequential and more of a subtle matter of taste - more similar than not. (i will say that the semitsu sticks are louder when you slam it against the gate, from the amount of plastics used)
i loved my ps1 padhack while i had it, it had a MUCH better input response time on computer, even with a cheap PS controller to USB converter, than the PC/PS3 board my stick came with. eventually upgraded it to a brook UFB for use on pc, switch, PS4 and 360, and then swapped the lever over to the semitsu. only other console stick i'd used before that one was the NES Advantage, the advantage (and ASCII Stick Jr.) aint the best thing ASCII made, that's for sure.
Ahhh I've only used Sanwa sticks so I didn't know Seimitsu sticks used the same switches. That's pretty cool. Maybe if I make another stick one day, I'll try it with a Seimitsu lever instead of Sanwa. And that's pretty surprising that a PS1 controller had a better response time than the OEM board loool. Do you remember what brand it was? I'm just curious because I only have experience with the HORI RAP 4 and Raspberry Pi Pico for fight sticks on PC. The ASCII Stick Jr. has such a nice design. Did it use switches or the rubber pads for the stick? I like the color scheme though. Kind of reminds me of the Namco PS1 Arcade Stick. Hope you enjoyed the video!

1: FWIW i'm pretty sure every public candy cab i've come across in the united states has been fitted out with 100% sanwa parts, and I have never been disappointed. seimitsu sticks are well designed and super overbuilt. while it may seem like they've got a bunch of them, they just have 2 body styles, and then variants of those with different springs/throw distances/shaft lengths/deadzones etc. the LS-32 and LS-40 in particular are wide and chunky over in the case, even moreso with the pcb. their sticks and buttons overall seem to feel firmer than sanwa's, but not too heavy. i've only used the new ls-32, which is still a fairly light action but feels a bit heavier than the JLF, with a shorter throw, a snappier return and smaller deadzone. as long as you get the right mounting plate your setup/build, the LS-32 is a very good all-rounder much like the JLF. their buttons are a bit firm and tactile, not heavy but unlikely to go off just resting your finger on it, more like a cherry clear than the buckling spring-heaviness of happ buttons. sanwa buttons make it less fatiguing and easy to rapid mash, and i've RARELY had one of them go off from resting.
2: it was a qanba Q1's OEM board, which was one of the least expensive sticks of its time (maybe still?? they have them on their website for 60 and in stock??). the case has held up spectacularly after having to cut away some plastic to make room for things!
3: the NES advantage/ASCII Stick Jr have the same internals with the rubber pads for everything, i remember one of the ADVANTAGES we had felt like it was starting to rip and start missing inputs a long time ago. the original ASCII Stick famicom seems to be a different beast altogether, with a nice printed metal look and arcade quality parts from seimitsu, looks just as good as the Jr.
5:20 I had a smaller SNES controller that had this programable ability.

Even just the box itself would be pricey to make. Then there's the motherboard, the buttons, stick... It's gonna be pricey.
I made a Hitbox style controller for a friend not too long ago for PC that uses USB. I used a Raspberry Pi Pico for the logic board with the GP2040 code you can find online. I prefer the Pico to the Brooke UFB mainly because Picos are only $5. If cost is the main hurdle, I'd look into the Pico board. It's definitely a big portion of the cost down if you use that instead of UFBs. And yeah the buttons and the stick are definitely the most expensive parts. Sticks being $30 and each button being $2, it can add up quickly. But since the Pi uses a standard USB cable, you can use it with your pc and any emulators. Also for the case, you can use wood like I did, or if there's a thrift store near you, I'd recommend dropping by occasionally and seeing if they have any good boxes. My local Goodwill has small wood boxes that I think were for jewelry that would make good arcade sticks. Whatever you decide to do, good luck with it I hope it turns out well. Lmk if there's some way I can help with your build too.
@@SodaCanTablet Thank you for the input. I have been wanting to put my Shop Class skills back into work for a custom fight stick. Though the work is gonna be a bit timely. I'll need to save up for the stick and buttons. I saw a good bundle for a stick and buttons on Amazon. The board though will be a separate expense.
I plan to map the buttons and set it up to be like an SNES controller. Problem is I'll need to put the L, R, ZL, and ZR buttons appropriately. It'd have to be an 8-button style stick, and in the case of emulation, I could easily map the buttons.
I just have to save up the money for the stuff on Amazon.
For the art, I'm thinking of trying to get an artist to do some stuff of my favorite anime girls as something of a pinup style.
