Curse-rotted greatwood, deacons of the deep, ruin sentinels, the rotten, old dragonslayer, nashandra, gwyndolin, demon firesage He put all these bosses higher than gwyn ffs
The one thing that really annoys me about the double apes is how good the first fight was. It had wild and hectic first phase. Then a revelation that he is still alive and is one of the immortals is downright creepy. And you remember how unique that fight was. Then you come across him again and at that point the ape overstays his welcome. It uses the same music that at the first fight was creepy, but now It's just annoying. And then in the second phase he calls upon the same looking ape which really kills the whole story of Guardian Ape where I thought that he outlived all of his species and remained alone tending to a flower for a bride that will never come. And also why does brown monkey have overgrown teeth and nails? I thought that overgrown teeth on Guardian Ape were representative of his immortality and how he is far past his life expectancy. And this is reason I hate it even more than just bad gameplay.
Yeah the only thing it has going for it is the initial surprise of the headless ape still being alive and it somehow being able to summon his dead mate to help him kill you, but like you said even that last part doesn't make sense because his mate clearly isn't an immortal. Going through all the gauntlets of strength including Mortal Journey really made me despise this fight.
It's not my favourite fight either but 1) it's entirely optional and 2) it's extremely easy so it really doesn't bother me, you only "need" to kill them on ng if you want the beads, afterwards you can just ignore them.
Surprised to see Capra nowhere in sight in bad and below, especially when you put it as the footage when you were talking about mediocre bosses. Every time I beat Gargoyles I dread the idea of having to go through lower burg and fight two dogs and a cow in a coffin sized arena.
Can’t you see? The first DS2 Dlc’s optional boss was a Gang Boss, the second DLC was a reskin (Smelter Demon, not Alonne) so the third DLC had - a Gang Reskin!
3 things 1. Thank you for ranking the guardian ape duo as low as you did. I like to actively pretend that fight doesn’t exist. 2. If Ludwig isn’t number 1, or at least top 5, we’re going to have some problems. 3. If I’m not mistaken, you’re doing the same thing demodcracy did several years ago with his boss ranking. I like that.
Definitely your best Video yet.. keep up the great work! Also first bloodborne boss coming up this late in the video really tells a lot about the game.
Do people really think gwyn is too hard? I thought he was designed to be easy because of being able to be parried. His fast attack works in your favour with parrying too. And to heal you just have to make sure you're far enough away
If you fail a single parry, it’s pretty much over. Imo he’s the hardest boss. He clearly doesn’t have a balanced move set. Not a single safe healing opportunity. Even artorias and manus have that
I know that Gwyn is supposed to be easy as sort of a narrative payoff to the whole "you stepping on the shoulders of dying giants" thing... But he actually made me stop playing, come back to DS1 more than a year later, quit again, and only beat him on my third return, after painfully learning how to parry. Without parrying, I'm stil pretty sure I'm unable to beat the guy. Between his auto-punish of healing, his jumps as soon as you get too far, his combos with weird timings, and the lack of windup... The guy is a pain.
Gwyn at 117 is SPICY. I don't think the fight is amazing mechanically but man, the symbolism and lore of the fight are too special to put him any lower than like the 25-30 range IMO. Soul of Cinder also retroactively made Gwyn a better boss, although SoC is far better in every aspect
So imma be honest, I’ve finished a bow run of DS3 recently and the ancient wyvern was surprisingly fun when you don’t go for the insta kill. Dodging it’s fire and steps was weirdly satisfying when you’re shooting it’s head on repeat. I highly recommend.
I shall now be a contrarian and list "positives" about Bed of Chaos' fight: 1. You can kill it in under a minute with well aimed bomb throws. 2. You can quit out and reload after hitting the glowing weak spots. 3. Bows work. 4. You can hug the wall on the left pathway and then jump over the hole instead of ever taking the inner route where you have to deal with the swipes. 5. This boss is easier to beat without taking damage than Nito. 6. ... The music's neat I guess. I dunno, I ran out of material.
Everything about gywn is amazing EXCEPT the fact that he can be parried yea I know there’s some lore reasons but for a game that hard the final boss should NOT be parry looped
@@R4Clover7 yeah, gameplay first, but he said he takes the other elements into account. It’s not just the lore, Gwyn is a story beat first and foremost. He’s supposed to be an easy, pushover boss. It’s a fantastic twist and Dark Souls would not be the same without it. Not to mention the beautifully melancholic music that fits the tone flawlessly. It leaves such a potent impression on the player and is one of the most memorable moments of the game. It all comes together to be incredibly impactful, and just because he “spams R1” doesn’t mean he’s any less of a great final boss. Gameplay is always important of course, but it’s doing the boss a massive disservice to treat it like it’s any other fight. I’m not saying he’s the greatest boss or anything, but the thematic quality of the boss alone places him AT LEAST in the top half! I also think the fight is enjoyable on its own. Parrying him is fun.
@@jakel4316 I agree to an extent. My take is simply that i prefer fast exhilarating bosses which I'm quite sure he prefers, and he said this is his opinion. Gwyn isn't exactly that, not a bad boss though, i would place him higher as well.
@@jakel4316 Thing is, the theme is very obvious... and only works IF you find the boss to actually be a pushover. He's the only boss in the whole DS trilogy that made me quit a game and stop playing it for months, having completely given up on beating it. After 2 instances of returning to the game and getting my ass handed to me after hours of getting back in the flow... I finaly gave in and learned parrying, which I never did in the whole game before (and why would I? It doesn't work on half the stuff you meet, it is hard to pull off and globally its more efficient to learn how to dodge and parry...), and then he suddenly became doable. Not easy, but doable. The reasons are accuratly portaryed in the video here : you basicaly can't heal, his combo starter is super quick... dodging the combos has a weird timing, parrying them requires more stamina than you'll ever get, and he hits like a truck... So the contradiction between the theme of him being a broken husk and the mechanics making him arguably the hardest boss in what I played Dark Souls (I didn't do most of the DLC yet, but for instance Soul of Cinder in DS3 is far more manageble... after all, his second phase is basicly gwyn... except in DS3 you are FAR nimbler) made him really frustrating. Vendrick and Gwyn should've shared their power a bit more equally, and maybe we would've gotten two decent "fallen king" bosses, rather than the pushover and the game-killer ones...

Personally one thing that makes me hate the gwyn fight is the really long and dull run to the fog gate if you die. Like, it's not even hard to dodge the black knights without getting hit. The kiln area did not have to be so big.
Although I agree these are not great bosses, I have to admit I sometimes have the most fun fighting some of these. Sometimes the silliness of something like covetous demon or the damage of Vendrick just feels… right? I am a Dark Souls 2 apologist though, admittedly. God I love bad bosses sometimes lmao
I think Music can make or break a boss personally. Storm King in the DeSR is absolutely amazing because of the heavy rain and the incredible music. The boss itself is honestly pretty bad and if it wasn't for the amazing Music and beautiful rain it would be a bottom tier boss but instead it's actually amazing.
I feel like I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, but I honestly don't think the Bed of Chaos is the worst boss in the franchise. At face value, nearly every Demons Souls boss goes on this list, most of them are the opposite of what fans of Dark Souls seem to want. That is a fast, unpredictable, unblockable, highly damaging murder machine. The truth is, as the series went on, the ideas in Demons Souls remain the most unique and the most innovative to date. More than ever in Elden Ring does every boss feel the same. Huge, insanely fast, with these long ass combos, and at this point it becomes "press dodge at the right time and attack until you win". Demons Souls is not about combat. Shocker. Its about exploration, its about rewarding the player for their strategy like a real adventurer. In this way, I would say thay legend of zelda is a more apt comparison to Demons Souls than say, DS3 or even DS. I think that when it comes to bosses, the games have gotten weaker combat wise as the game progresses.
Well I'm definitely going to enjoy these videos. Also will you be talking about the inner versions of some of the Sekiro bosses? I feel like it would make sense since some of the new attacks they gain change up the fight a bit. I'm also curious as to what you thought of the Elden Ring trailer if you've seen it yet.
I do have inner bosses included. And IF I've seen Elden Ring trailer? IF?? Of course I've seen it, I saw it the second it came out! Thought it looked great.
I don’t care that Gwynn is in the bad tier, I care that he is below Capra demon and centipede demon
