You MADE MY DAY!!! You are easy and fun to listen to and learn from! I downloaded a manual, but couldn’t quite figure out the stitches. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! My daughter bought a set of converted presser feet on eBay for 37.50 for me for Christmas and after sorting them out, I am using number 17 for my embroidery foot. It worked on all 20 stitches. I was careful to test the needle touching the foot by turning the flywheel first. I am jealous of your attachments, but I am set up! We oiled every part using a TH-cam ... masinskikutak or close to that. We also checked the motor but that was ok and luckily because it didn’t match our knowledge. We checked the pulleys and belts without taking everything apart, using TH-cam videos. I get vintage supplies from Hi Fashion in Colorado. I LOVE this machine!!! I was ready to toss my BROTHER out the window! My old Viking disintegrated ( a pewter part..that is PEWTER) after 35 years.
I was so wrapped to find your TH-cam video recently while surfing the Internet. You see my dad had bought the same machine for my mum many years ago and my mum did not like the Bernina as it was too complicated for her to use. My mum just wanted a simple foot presser Singer sewing machine which were pretty old style. My mum let me use the Bernina to practice my sewing class projects on it back then. I was 16 years old and I made my youngest sister's school uniform on it. I am 60 years old now and I am still using my Bernina 830 and was so excited to listen to you speak about this very well built sewing machine in such a lovely manner......so true it is a beautiful sewing machine to use and I shall be leaving it to my daughter one day....Thank you🌱
You're welcomed Angela! I love Bernina. I'm uploading a video now about my new Bernina 217 Industrial sewing machine. It's awesome as well. Thank you for your comment and subscription.
I mean: your machine is moving the fabric to behind the machine. Mine is doing the opposite: the fabric is moving ahead! Wich botton May I press??? Help! LOL I’m totally incompetent!
Thank you so much for this 😊. Was given this machine as it had been abandoned in some club rooms, got her serviced & looked at different videos on how to use her, just loved your passion & joy in showing us what her pretty stitches can do - I sew recycle bags on vintage sewing machines - treadles/handcranks using upholstery-fabrics that was destined for land fill & really wanted to do some fancy stitches on the pockets, & this little beauty with your video has helped me immensely 😊.
I just bought a used one, serviced it, and it does sew beautiful stitches. I just need to buy more feet. Can you provide the number for the regular sewing foot? Thanks.
Any idea why mine keeps breaking needles? It's the same machine as this video. It will be sewing along and POP the needle breaks! So far last week broke all 5 in a package of needles I just bought. There are marks on the needle plate where it hits it. Is $100 a good average for service to clean and make adjustments to it ? A friend GAVE me this machine that he picked up on trash day ! Yes, it had been set out for the trash, but I'm in Florida and that's what people here do with everything....it has the red case, the little box with all the accessories and feet, and even the big plate to extend the sewing area! So to send it in for cleaning is not a problem, and it sure needs cleaning and oiling. Think how nice it will be when I get it back. I am so thankful to have it, and for finding you on youtube to show me how to use it. It's not your ordinary sewing machine, its quiet, solid as a rock. They sell for $1600 to $2500 on eBay!! Found the manual online for free. So I am ready to rock and roll with my NEW Vintage Bernina! BTW, these machines are made in Switzerland, no wonder they are so perfect.
Thank you so much for this video! I was struggling with my decorative stitches today, and you totally helped. You are right - this is an awesome machine. I love the vintage machines - true workhorses. :-)
hi great video i have my exact m0del for over 40 years! i do not have the manual land i have not touched the machine in about 20 years. i am having trouble with the embroidery stitches. when i put the width at 4 it keeps hitting the presser foot. i used the one you recommended 003 i also tried the all purpose 000. i broke two needles. what is wrong? i greased it up but something not okay with the width set up. any ideas??? thanks in advance
An online manual is available from the Bernina website here: www.bernina.com/en-CA/Support-CA/Out-of-Print-Manuals/BERNINA-manuals/BERNINA-Sewing-Systems
Do you have the manual? I would suggest that you invest in one. There should be a switch on top of the machine that shows a straight stitch and a zig-zag. You must set it for what you want. If you're new to the Bernina 830, play with it and see what it can do! The manual is a great guide for this. Good luck with your new Bernina!
You seem like a really nice lady and you have a very warm tone to your voice. It would be great if we could see you! Don't be camera shy! Here are some pointers: Try to demonstrate on a piece of fabric with less glare. (Soft blue, pale pink, pale green.) Use a thread that really contrasts, like navy, black, red, or dark green (depending on your fabric.) It will be easier to see the stitches. You might think about numbering them in ink as you do them ("this is #1, #2, etc. so that sewers who are new to decorative stitches can follow you more clearly.) The names of the stitches are in the manual and may correspond with the number that you select when you set it on the machine. Using decorative stitches is a lot of trial and error and it takes time to learn how to work with them. If using a scalloped edge to be trimmed closely with that as the finish, your stitches must be much tighter so that there is no frayed fabric peeking through the decorative stitching. (I use a tight satin stitch for this type of work.) Also, it's important to understand that these stitches are most successful on woven fabrics. The 830 does great with knits and some of the overcasting stitches work well on knits but it takes practice, the right needle, and patience. BTW...this Bernina model has a switch to allow for moderate and fast speed but I rarely needed to go with the slower speed unless I was working on something cut on the bias or extremely delicate fabrics. It IS a nice option to have if you're learning. I love my Bernina 830! I had one for years but lost it in a sad situation. I stopped sewing for a few years and when I got some extra money I knew I wanted the same machine so I bought one on ebay, like you. It was not cheap! I had to buy a separate foot peddle because the women who sold me mine wasn't a sewer and didn't know it needed one. There was no manual, only 2-3 presser feet, and a few other missing components, all of which I bought individually from other sellers. I think it cost me about $650 all in, but I couldn't be happier with it. I've never used any computerized sewing machine and I'm not really interested in getting one. The 830 does everything I need and so much more. The only thing I'm not happy with is the way it makes buttonholes. I've never seen a good buttonhole from a machine with a buttonholer built into it. The best buttonholes are made with a separate attachment that has a particular throat plate and cams that make specific sized holes, depending on what you're making. I've used these on machines that only sew straight stitches and if I need to make buttonholes I'll invest in an older straight stitch machine and one of these attachments (I think they're still made by Singer.) Thank you for taking the time to make the video and providing such a helpful tutorial. I look forward to watching more of your videos!
Thank you for your thorough explanation of the steps/settings.
You’re welcomed!
Your videos are so helpful and you’re a fun person to learn from, thanks for making these!
You’re welcome! Please subscribe to my channel if you’ve haven’t already. I will be bringing more video to come. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I wasn't sure if one of my stitches was forming correctly. But, seeing yours stitched out confirmed that my machine is okay.

Hello, recently I bought the same machine, but I have no idea how to make the embroidery stitches. I'm only doing straight stitches. Please HELP!
Do the same thing that I show you in the video to get decorative stitches. Is your machine stuck in any way?

Sad that this video is over bright so that I can't see what you are doing...
