    Ghost face getting his ass kicked to me made him a little more scary than the indestructible other slashers. It made seem like you could possibly win, but he always seem to be just a little bit more ahead. Fighting an unkillable nightmare lich, yeah you're dead. Fight a person who actually gets hurt when you punch him, you have a chance. The stakes are higher if you have a chance.

    Wow I made this horror movie template! The films you picked looked so similar to my own list when I realised that you used the one I created. I don’t wanna be that guy who makes a big deal out of nothing but man it felt really good to see you consider my template half decent and get some use out of it. It feels like I’ve somewhat contributed to the horror community which is cool. I’m the same with Alien at S Tier - I also put The Witch there and Halloween. I really really like Hellraiser so that’s A tier for me. I will have to watch The Thing again as I put it in A tier but after hearing your enthusiastic praise for it I guess it’s time for a rewatch. Fun Fact: I put Twilight Breaking Dawn in the template as a meme due to that horrifying cgi baby! More terrifying than any horror movie I’ve seen.

      My opinion: If you like Bram Stoker's Dracula for aesthetic and horror of it,it is fine. It is a beautiful movie to look at,but as a fan of the original Dracula novel I'd put it into tier F just because the movie bastardizing all the hard work Stoker put in the novel which granted him so many stink eyes from the victorian society enraged me. I almost ruptured an artery while watching it,it made me so mad. Dracula is not supposed to be a "straight historical romance" or beautiful. It is an allegory of homosexuality in Victorian Era. I know it is an adaptation but it's success among the mainstream viewers completely wrecked the image of Dracula in public mind,now everyone thinks Dracula was in love with Mina and "died for her" instead of him being in love with Jonathan and it being a hazard to the prim and proper victorian society.

      I think my only problem with that movie is them flubbing the ending (at the pool). The rest of it is great, though, and the ending is even kinda ambiguous. I love how you never know if it's a just a person walking towards the camera, or IT just calmly walking to the protagonists (apart from the scenes where it's clearly IT). Also I just about shit myself in that one scene where it stepped out of the shadows after the heroine's mom or sister opened her bedroom door. Okay, I'm being hyperbolic, but the scene I'm referring to was an actual full body shudder + recoil from the screen moment.

It's really masterful, even if there's one specific part during the climax that uses extremely common, incredibly overused stock audio that very nearly ripped me out of the moment (completely saved by Essie Davis' performance). It took a rewatch to fully understand it, but it was so worth it. The filmmakers are genius. I mean, c'mon, they flip the script on the kid so suddenly that you don't even notice that you go from absolutely hating his guts (yeah, I don't blame her, he's a fucking nightmare) to really feeling bad for him, and even for how you felt as he was obviously struggling with the fact that his only remaining parent is going insane in front of him.

      @@MrTherandomguy42 The Sixth Sense is a legit horror film. It's just so old that it's not considered scary anymore. When you think about it, you were seeing ghosts and some were mutilated as they were at the time of death. It's also a horror film in the sense that it's the POV of a child who is being told he's crazy and the only one who believes him is his therapist... who seems to be losing power in his own life, so how can he help?
      It's certainly a horror movie. It's a horror movie that they considered "safe for kids" yet there's a scene where someone explains an area is where "During the Revolutionary War, they would hang traitors here." And you immediately see a family being hung from the rafters... Not really as child friendly as we sell it.
      Honestly it's... pretty scary because it delves into the psychological aspect.
      M. Night does a lot of "softcore" horror that doesn't use jumpscares. People are expecting him to keep doing The Sixth Sense when he says he intends to make movies that are like telling a story at bedtime/around a campfire. It doesn't work for all of his movies but I find it does make for creative and uncomfortable feelings.

    Bateman from American Psycho is one of my favorite fictional killers, he has that chameleon-like, faceless quality despite being intensely memorable. Really enjoyed the book as well. The fact that it directly quotes from soulless irl advertisements from the time is perfect. The horror feels like it extends beyond the film itself, it really is more satirical as John says.
    ...Also the "unexpected moment" from Don't Breathe was... definitely something. LOL

    I really liked the Autopsy of Jane Doe. It had a lot of twists and the ending was surprising and I think compared to a lot of modern horror movies it did a lot of new things.
    It was a crime you put Nightmare on Elm Street on B-tier though, but Evil Dead on A tier is good.
    Embarrassing fact about me, none of the Final Destination movies scared me except for the one about Rollercoaster. It made me go from someone who loved amusement parks to someone who became a lot more wary and slightly scared. It’s very embarrassing.
    IT (the original) also scared me to death and also genuinely made me terrified of clown. I watched it as a young girl (same age as the kids in the movie) and it was the middle of a blizzard that left us stranded in our home for days. I had to sleep with my mom for a week to get back to normal.
    It’s insane to think how much I scarred myself as a child with watching things like Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, IT, and now anything involved with horror or the supernatural are the things I love today.
    Silence of the Lambs is one of my favorite movies, but I have to reflect on the intense transphobia in it today. While the movie does a great job at addressing sexism, it ignores the fear of the LGBTQ+ that it stirs up which might have contributed to a lot of hate and stigma that the community faced in the 90s all the way to today. There is a conversation that should be had about it that I think people avoid because of what a great and iconic movie Silence of the Lambs is.
    The Shining is again, one of my favorite movies of all time. I once heard a theory about the Shining, both the book and the movie. King and Kubrick had two different visions with the Shining (which is why King hates it so much and has endorsed other Shining adaptions) and it’s because in the book, the hotel is actually haunted, but in the movie, Jack is mentally breaking down and everything is in his head. Obviously the sequel, Doctor Sleep, shoots this whole idea down, but again you have to look at the two examples in a bubble and Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ in it’s own universe. How he treated Shelly Duval was completely disgusting though, but I’m trying to judge the art.
    Psycho was the first movie to show a flushing toilet, which almost got the movie banned in America. The reason Albert Hitchcock insisted on keeping it in the movie was because it would unnerve the audiences so much, that it would get them on edge for what would happen next in the movie and they wouldn’t know what could possibly happen next. The first time I saw Psycho I was like eight years old.
    Sorry I went on a huge rant, I literally just meant to comment on Autopsy of Jane Doe but I was writing as I was watching and I got carried away as you kept talking.

    I have to watch hereditary now, if only because Toni Colette. I feel like the one element of Halloween, at least the original, that makes it so amazing is the tense atmosphere. It's a slasher but not fully, which is the appeal. I would classify Halloween and Silence of the Lambs to be S tier, personally, but I agree with most of this list, ironically. I think it's Final Destination 2 that had the semi truck with a bunch of either tree trunks or pipes on the back that inevitably kill the person - that always stuck with me and I'm still haunted by it and can't drive behind those trucks to this day. That doesn't make it a good film but damn the impact is real.
    Does Shudder have all of these on it?
    Ps, I'm only 1 hour and 5 mins in, but haven't seen... I think it was called House of Wax, but it had a scene where someone was trapped under a sewer grate and they put their fingers between the grate to alert their friend who was with that killer above them... and the killer cut off the fingers with a set of wire cutters and that has always stuck with me to this day too.

    I agree with It Follows and The Village being underrated. The only thing I’d change is that I’d put Hills Have Eyes 1 in B tier, there’s just something about that movie I like

    • @Goldenkitten1
      @Goldenkitten1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I agree pretty much everywhere and totally agree that The Village gets waaaaay to much shit for what is a reasonably solid movie, like John said I think Lady in the Water is where he started to go down hill. The only thing I'd change is I'd put The Descent in either A or maybe even S-tier (as long as we're talking the original UK ending and not the butchering it got in the US just to make a sequel), I'd put Hush higher as well but that's probably because several of my family members are deaf so it scared the shit out of them and thus me in turn.

    Definitely recommend rewatching Hush! I was very very impressed with it. It's not an exceedingly scary movie, but the tension is killer!

    • @JohnWolfe
      @JohnWolfe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Honestly the main reason I have Conjuring in B tier is because I find exorcism films kind of exhausting. Once you get to a certain point in the movie, every single cast member is screaming every line, the possessed person is looking grosser and grosser every scene... it's numbing to me after a bit. But like I said, I really appreciate Wan's sense of drama in those films, the direction is really good

    • @SelectBard133
      @SelectBard133 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnWolfe That's understandable. I personally found The Conjuring just had a perfect buildup to payoff, and the assault on the senses that you describe as exhausting makes it feel impactful to me, sort of like how you say the film does a good job of making the stakes feel really high. The soundtrack and growing tension as a result of Wan's direction lends a great deal to the perfect amount of buildup to a huge finale.
      Loved the vid, thanks for the content! (And John Carpenter's The Thing should totally be studied as a whole course on how to do horror films)

    • @Em-fz5uh
      @Em-fz5uh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree completely ! I really liked Hush personally. In my opinion, the fact that she's deaf really added to the tension, it made her even more vulnerable. She is also one of the rare protagonist in horror movies (that I've seen) that is actually smart, very resourceful.
      I'm a fan of the work of Flanagan and Spiegel so maybe I'm biased lol. Loved their work on The Haunting of Hill House too.
      Not related at all but I wish John would have reacted to Sinister. I'd love to hear his opinion on it.

    • @ciarajones4970
      @ciarajones4970 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched Hush because everyone was raving about it. I was pretty unimpressed to be honest. I remember there was this bath scene towards the end of the movie and I couldn't stop laughing. Think it played too much on the cliche home alone in the middle of nowhere scenario.
      Also I would put the exorcism of Emily rose ahead of the conjuring, based on that girls acting alone, which made that movie so popular.

    I appreciate your comments about The Shining being 'not for everyone' even though you put it in S Tier. As a horror movie fan it's one of those movies I always feel like I *should* enjoy it, but I just don't. The long quiet stretches to build tension and the very slow buildup just make it so by the time the ending rolls around I'm already over it. I definitely understand why other people like it, but it doesn't do it for me. Your list seems really consistent and well-reasoned, thanks for sharing!

    The Village was marketed as a horror film when it really was a love story with a thrilling mystery attached. I didn't know about the twist when I first saw it, and I initially watched it with people who HATED the twist, but I loved it. I thought it was a great movie with a great twist. But I can see how people who went into it looking to see people get torn up by old timey monsters would be disappointed. I'm so happy to finally see someone who enjoyed it like I did, though. Much respect.

    Solid list, well done.
    John Carpenter’s The Thing is as close as you can get to a perfect horror movie. There are so many subtle details that just aren’t found in modern horror films.
    Besides all of the obvious components that make this a great film (atmosphere, tension, soundtrack, practical effects), the piece that really gets me is that we know NOTHING about the crew members, other than their jobs at the station (family back home, relationships, hobbies, personal beliefs). It’s part of the overarching theme that we truly don’t know who the characters are and they don’t really know each other well enough to decide who might be the imposter. It keeps everything calculated, analytical, and scientific as the crew tries to figure out who is infected and leads up to the perfectly executed blood test scene. Man, what a great movie.

    John THANK YOU for rating The Village!! i honestly adore that movie, it might not be specifically a “horror” but I genuinely think it was tastefully done, the twist was decent, the acting is great and the characters are so emotional and intense, and the SOUNDTRACK? oh my god! insanely underrated, dude! and honestly i do think the “creature” design was terrifying, and the way they portray it through the movie is pretty effective
    not saying it’s a perfect film but i find it so charming, if a little bit campy - it and Signs are two of my favourites to be honest
    Ps. Rear Window is amazing, and also, if you haven’t seen Rope by Hitchcock, but you like a film that all plays out in one place (though it’s a little like a theatre anti-murder mystery)? [chefs kiss]
