A moment of silence for that poor Norway crew who survived the battle only to get caught in the explosion of the cube. As a star trek online player I feel their pain.
Sure the Maranda has more firepower than the oberth but then again so does a p-51 mustang.
I love the fact that the Starfleet ships were able to cause the fight to drag on for so long that the Cube's power grid is actually breaking down through attrition- that it was just being hit sooo much and taking so much damage that even its power reserves are being so over-taxed that it's normally perfect defenses are breaking down and resulting in it taking damage that it would normally have just shrugged off under normal circumstances,
Wrong about the Akira-class, by the way. We all know it has over 9,000 torpedo launchers with a complement of infinity GodJesus torpedoes.
According to Star Trek Elite Force and USS Voyager and some background theories and script, the target USS Enterprise hit was the vinculum, a system vital to running the borg systems as it would coordinate the entire thought process of a cube. Without it, Borg would not be able to distribute information as well through the various nods. Also, according to 7 of 9 been always a weakness but the Borg have been able to hide it with their technology, hence the line of Data seeing no vital system. It also explained why it took the entire fleet to destroy it for they have to go through a lot of armor, but like hitting the warp core, it means an instant kill for Borg but unless you have a massive fleet, your unable to get to it.
The battle started in the typhon sector and was a running battle all the way to secotr 001. The battle lasted for several hours at high warp pursuit, which is why the enterprise was able to make it to the sol system from the galactic east of the romulan border, whilst the typhon sector is due galactic north east from sol. The reason for the cubes destruction was because Picard had heard the collective ordering drones to repairing a vulnerability in the ships power distribution systems when a shield sector suffered critical damage. Theirs no real weakspot, it was a target of opportunity.
You forgot the Millennium Falcon which also participated in the Battle of Sector 001.

The Oberth is star treks GR75. Completely irrelevant for a combat fleet, but still somehow sent to the front lines in every engagement.

I always assumed the destruction of the cube took advantage of some momentary weakness in the regeneration mechanism, hitting something that appeared useless or shut down at just the right moment to overload everything. That's why Picard was listening and waiting for the right moment when he knew all the gas lines were opened up, as it were.
The admiral's flagship that was destroyed was going to be shown and was called the Excalibur. The artwork for the film included early design studies of it.
The Borg could have easily avoided this mess altogether by doing something rather simple.... send Two Borg cubes. It is the logical answer, if one cube fails send 2. If two fail send four. We see it when they deal with Species 90210...er 8472.
the ablative armor on the defiant is special, they talk about how its been upgraded without telling starfleet in a ds9 episode where it has to fight the lakota ( excelsior class vessel) to get to earth
1) Borg ship travels back in time FIRST.
Personally I think Starfleet's original plan was flawed in the sense that they were scattering their attacks all over the cube rather than focus firing a single point like Picard instructed. The cube may be generalized in its systems, but one thing is certain, the majority of the cube's armor would be on the outer hull.
