    I get the criticism of Detective Mode, especially as it began transitioning over to other games where it made less sense, but I feel it was important for making the player feel like Batman. You're supposed to be Batman in his prime, so you need a mechanic that gives you some idea how the "World's Greatest Detective" sees the world.

    • @Onlyhooper
      @Onlyhooper 5 ปีที่แล้ว +118

      Vance B True, it was essential in the batman games, and made gameplay a lot more fun too. But it was overused. Almost all predator challenges for players would’ve spent the majority of it within detective mode. I tried to not utilise it too much as the visuals were great also, and detective mode took that away. Super useful and needed, but they should have perhaps anticipated that in advance, thus why the scrambler thugs (City) and guys who detect vision mode in (Knight) were needed at times

    • @maesterdanteamadeus444

      @@Onlyhooper Wait you kept detective mode on? I only turned it on when I needed to find someone to beat, collecting riddler trophies, or story progression. Why would you keep it on?

      No, I said in my first reply that I didn't do that because I enjoyed the graphics and environmental details, whereas detective mode turned everything colourless with red and blue skeletons. But I know people that kept it on far too much. It made predator challenges very easy, and I think that's why people overused it. Devs said it was a mistake to not balance it too.

    Watching this made me realize the key fault in Spider-man's stealth in that there was no urgency in any of those segments. You could take out all foes leisurely and they would never adapt or change their behavior as you picked them off one by one.

    • @jmiles86
      @jmiles86 5 ปีที่แล้ว +111

      That, and the wall crawling is restrictive and there aren't many items that work well with stealth since many of them might get you caught (other then the Web Mine).

    • @missingaforest3639
      @missingaforest3639 5 ปีที่แล้ว +146

      Stealth in spider-man was pretty bare-bones, fingers crossed they flesh it out in the sequel

    • @mega20able
      @mega20able 5 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      Imo the stealth in Spider-Man had some pretty blatant flaws, like not being necessary for 95% of the game, failing to encourage creative use of gadgets, and the fact that perch takedowns are pretty much the safest and most reliable way to do every single one, unlike the ones in Batman where you need to asess the situation, strategize and stay on the move to not be spotted
      But they were still very satisfying to pull, so once they make the sequel I hope they expand on these segments

    • @Nassit-Gnuoy
      @Nassit-Gnuoy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Not only that, but the AI in Spider-Man during stealth situations is really stupid or just really oblivious. How do they not see or hear their comrades webbed up against the wall or hanging from a perch? How do they not hear Spidey’s webs when they spray?

    • @mega20able
      @mega20able 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@Nassit-Gnuoy That's not inherently bad, just immersion-breaking. A good AI is not meant to defeat the player but lend itsef to creating interesting gameplay scenarios. Which admitedley the game doesn't pull off either, since the AI is WAAAAAY too easy to manipulate, and then again, when the mooks turn around it's useless as long as you're on top of a perch and can execute perch takedowns, since perches more or less make you completely invisible

      I mean, no one is saying Spiderman is bad, so I dont know why you are getting so defensive about it. Also, having played most of those games and looking at footage of the rest, the combat only resembles those Spider-Man games in the most rudimentary fashion, but only in the way all platformers use jumping because it's a base requirement. Spiderman never owned combo punching goons.

    Im not much of a gamer. Never have been other than sports games. But I finally broke down and played Spider-Man because I heard so many good things and I am a huge Marvel fan.
    After I was done, I was like... "This is one of the best games I have ever played".
    So a friend of mine says... well, you might like Arkham Knight if you like Spider-Man.
    I played it for about 45 minutes and I was like... I TOTALLY see the influence on the Spider-Man game.
    Then my same friend said, well you can played the first 2 games on PS4 because they remastered them.
    I was ehhhh about it. But found a great price. Hesitated to open the packaging.
    But when I did, I could not believe I was playing a game that should have been outdated.
    I got to City and I got it... Meaning I understood.
    These games changed gaming. They were fantastic LONG after they should have had that affect on someone playing it for the first time.
    I even liked Origins. The criticism of the game is fair. It really doesn't do anything new. But sometimes it's cool just to play a greatest hits album.

    While I understand why people aren't a fan of the "detective vision" mechanic that has shown up in a lot of modern titles, I kind of need it if I'm going get through particular games. I'm legally blind, and thus I have a hard time seeing particular things in certain lighting, and fine details and textures are difficult for my eyes to register. (And a lot of modern games love them some dark, gritty visual design) So being able to highlight intractables, pick-ups, and enemies is incredibly helpful for keeping a fun gameplay flow for me. There have been so many times in games where I would be stuck for hours in an area, not because I was dumb, but because the solution was right in front of me and I just straight-up couldn't see it.

You had to do the typical run up a wall, grab a curtain, swing on a rod, climb more wall... and only grab certain spaces or fall and have to start all over... but the modern graphics were so realistic and seamless it took FOREVER to get through each room. For a game like that to 'flow' you need those handholds and paths highlighted in some way.... I never did beat that game. Got frustrated and quit after a couple of months.

      Oh, it's not just you! The environmental details in modern games are so busy now, it can often be much harder to tell what to look for or what you can interact with and whatnot. I started thinking about this again when I played the original and 2016 Doom games recently. I had a much easier time keeping focused on the combat in Classic Doom, because the simpler visuals allow for much more clarity. It could be harder to make stuff out on the new one, due to all the excessive visual "noise".

The boss fights in this game are it's one major weakness, and the main reason why I think Origins gets more crap then it deserves is because it's combat in the boss fights is so much better. The Deathstroke boss fight is the best combat combat in the entire series, just as how the Mr. Freeze boss fight is the best stealth fight.

      You know, I think that Deathstroke fight is overrated, there's not much dynamism or creativity demanded from it, your basically just countering his moves and punching him a bit until he dies, then batman beats him in a cut scene before you even finish off his health bar, fuck that.
      I way prefer the first Bane fight and the Copperhead fight in the same game, I know that they fall into the 'glorified mob fight' in a lot ways like the video mentions, but they do it way better than anywhere else in the games and lean on the stuff that makes the combat system fun and rewarding as a result, while revolving around a main enemy that's much more interesting to engage compared to, say, Bane in the first game or Solomon Grundy in City.

      @@BossKillRatio I think the regular gameplay of Knight is the best in the series. The combat, the predator segments, the traversal mechanics all were refined into perfection. And then they decided to throw a tank game once every mission and a half it. Tbf I know a lot of people really like the Batmobile, and that's fair, there's nothing wrong with that, but I just wish it was used more as a fun way to traverse the city and solve a few puzzles, rather than being central to the game. All I'm saying is, I don't like tank or racing games, so to me AK was constantly flowing from "this is the best arkham game hands down" to "I could be playing anything else right now". Speaking of copying, aside from press y/triangle to counter, in what way did Sleeping Dogs "copy" Arkham Asylum I've played it and aside from countering, the combat controls nothing alike with emphasis on preset combos and grapple moves and especially environmental kills and weapons, it's also a lot stiffer but I don't mean that in a bad way.

    TL;DR: I'd love to see a retrospective of Assassin's Creed and its influence on gaming.
    Great video! I know the video is a bit old, but I felt this needed to be said. While a lot of this is true, I felt like you undercut a lot of what Assassin's Creed did similarly. The first game came out two years before Arkham and had already done a lot of what you mentioned here. Eagle Vision is a significantly less powerful detective vision, but holds the same purpose. The stealth involved a lot of the same things: finding the high ground, learning routes, etc. Even the fear element was there, albeit less of a focus. The combat involved a lot of the same aspects including counters, timing, and overall flow. In addition, AC2 cleaned up and improved upon a lot of things that the first game did, and it was only three months after Arkham released so not much room for influence.
    PS: You have gained another new subscriber. Current count is 66.6k, spooky.

    Arkham Asylum is a rad game, and now I'm glad that I have a video to give people to back up that opinion. A nice retrospective as always, with a good amount of detail and a fair look at each aspect (like the excellent atmosphere and the underwhelming boss fights.) There was a hiccup with the portion covering combat as the background music got a bit bombastic and made it hear to hear the voiceover at one or two points, but nothing too major (and it could just be my awful hearing playing tricks again.) I especially love that you mentioned how Rocksteady went with their own angle rather than a straightforward adaptation and what a breath of fresh air that actually was for the time. That and the glitching Scarecrow-esque introduction? Sweet stuff.

    I would love to see a video essay in this style for Arkham City and how it changed the formula from Arkham Asylum with its open world and the bigger scope of the game. With how it benefited from those changes and the disadvantages of moving away from the linear Metroid-vania gameplay of Asylum. I personally prefer Arkham City because of its tone being more akin to the animated series and how it felt more like a comic book world as opposed to Asylum. Also the simplicity of Asylum’s combat and stealth mechanics are kind of difficult to go back to after experiencing what the other games in the series brought to the table in those fields. But I have to say, this video made me realize and newfound respect for Asylum and what it meant for the series and games in general. I never comment on videos but I thought I should tell you how great of a job you did with this, keep up the great work 👍

    Good stuff man. I actually never realized Arkham Asylum wasn't the first game Rocksteady made. I already wanted to go back and replay this, but now that I know it's the 10-year anniversary in 2019 I think I'm going to make a point to revisit it.
    Only negative comment would be to note the original Assassin's Creed released in 2007 and was pretty heavily reliant on the counter-attack feature. I recall more than a few interviews comparing it to Assassin's Creed combat, but an improvement since you had to use buttons other than counter for many of the fights. That said, after playing Assassin's Creed 3 and quitting, I think you're right that the series took influence from Batman and tried to (poorly) imitate its success themselves.
    Can't really say beyond that myself, as after giving up on AC3 I abandoned the series.
    I appreciate that you don't call Spider-Man a complete imitation, though. While its narrative structure, implementation of villains, and stealth segments are all effectively imitating or blatantly inspired by Arkham, I felt like the combat of Spider-Man was more along the lines of a super simplification of the DMC/Bayonetta style combat with an element of Arkham's execution. As you say, Arkham is a rhythm game, and that's not really the sort of game Spider-Man was trying to be.

    If anything, AA stole the system from Assassin’s Creed.

    I think the key here was...tension.
    You can have aspects like stealth...combat...gadgets. But the core facet that ties it all together is the need to succeed.
    The objective is not enough for a player. Tension for a player is created through obstacles and forcing them to adapt to the situation.
    In short...you have to make the player feel as if they are at a disadvantage. Not all the time, the Arkham games had bouts where you could freely enjoy your power and vent frustration on the poor schmucks working for the big bad. But what makes it good is this lets you explore the power and PROGRESSING, merely the act of MOVING STORY FORWARD, tells the game 'time to put you to the test'.
    I feel like nothing really embodies this concept of tension more than the absolute mindf*ck of the Scarecrow Jumpscare. If you've seen it you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. It's something you do not expect. It throws you out of your comfort zone not as a character, but as a PLAYER. And it likely makes you unsettled for the rest of your play session if not wary for the remainder of the game.
    Admittedly the Detective mode doesn't really help the game much. The tension aspect is what drives things forward. And Detective mode is an extremely safe element, something you use when and because you won't be interrupted (mostly). I for one found it kind of nice to have, but perhaps Detective mode should have taken a more passive route and forced the player to directly solve problems...actually challenge your intelligence so that when you succeeded you felt smarter, like you knew the enemy now and could pick them apart.
    Kind of like being Batman.
    Honestly the combat itself is fairly powerful, but what makes it exceptional is how it ties into your ability to deal with a situation. Boss fights were kind of canned and I think more than a bit scripted in how you played them which I think contributed to how unfun they might have felt.
    But those moments where you find a dark...quiet space. Where you have the time to watch everyone...plan your attack...wait for opportunity...and then strike without warning and tear your foes apart...being rewarded by seeing hordes of enemies crumble before you like so many Jenga blocks...those are truly special.

    Arkam asylum: best atmosphere
    Arkham city: best story
    Arkham origin: best boss fight
    Arkham Knight: best graphics, and ending (in my humble opinion.)

    Free flow is only simple until:
    1) You play it above normal (no counter flash)
    2) You want to get 100% completion
    3) Your want to look _good_

    What's odd is that Arkham Asylum - playstyle-wise - really wasn't that far removed form the previous Batman game: 'Batman Begins'.
    Really it just added the sandbox element to the Batman Begins formula, and BOOM! Suddenly every superhero game was an Arkham clone.

      Playing the Batman Begins game, there isnt a lot of similarities aside from the fear mechanic and some of the stealth, which itself was rather rudimentary comparatively.
      I could see Rocksteady making taking notes from Batman Begins, but personally I cant see it being that much of an inspiration as opposed to any other piece of media.

    I love this! But your gripe with the free flow combat made me a bit confused and a little angry. Playing on hard difficulty made it so there wasn't any of the counter attack symbols. You just had to do it using visual cues. Making you feel more like Batman. Also, you said something along the lines that it's hard to predict where your next attack might hit or if your close enough. But the higher your combo multiplyer is the further Batman is able to attack. That's it for my complaints though. I love your content and thank you for making this video!
