      The solos differ every show, and there are versions of Comfortably Numb from that tour that have fantastic solos on TH-cam, but likely not the version from Earl's Court that moyesboy1 is referring to. The one most fans go to as the ultimate version of the Comfortably Numb solo is this one: th-cam.com/video/vi7cuAjArRs/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=idin

Not much vocals but it’s the raw feeling and completeness that I love. I think Comfortably Numb is, Gilmour’s best performance as far as emotion right up there Marooned.

  • @tdb2012
    @tdb2012 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Loved this reaction! Roger Waters wrote the lyrics and said that the song is about two things. First, it's about how he felt as a child when he was sick with a high fever. It happened to him again after he'd become an adult where he went into a state of delirium and felt detached from reality. The lyrics "When I was a child I had a fever/My hands felt just like two balloons" describe exactly what he felt as a child. he says "I remember having the flu or something, an infection with a temperature of 105 and being delirious. It wasn't like the hands looked like balloons, but they looked way too big, frightening." Later in an interview at an LA radio station Waters' said a part of the song also refers to the time he had bad stomach cramps that he thought would keep him from going on. The doctor backstage gave him a shot of something he was sure could've killed an elephant and he did the show barely able to lift his hands above his knees.

    It’s a song about medication but not street drugs. Roger Waters did have a fever when he was a kid and was given a drug. Later he was doing a gig and he was in pain. A doctor gave him a shot to help him. He got so spaced out he just about managed to do the next set but was so far gone he couldn’t do an encore.

  • @bostonvair
    @bostonvair 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This song is da bomb. Loved your reaction! The story behind this song was that bassist and one of the singers Roger waters was in a lot of pain due to an ulcer or some such and was medicated so he could perform live. He's the guy singing during the verses. The singer during the choruses ("There is no pain, you are receding, etc..." is David Gilmour, who also plays both of the awesome guitar solos in this song). Gilmour's guitar sound is truly singular.

  • @WookieWarriorz
    @WookieWarriorz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    the song isnt really about drugs tbh, the line 'when i was a child, i caught a fleeting glimpse out of the corner of my eye, i turned to look but it was gone, i cannot put my finger on it now the child has grown the dream is gone, i have become comfortably numb' summarizes the meaning of the song, its about how as we get older we forget our dreams and the things that made us feel such strong emotions as a child are just a fleeting glimpse now and we all can so easily become comfortably numb.

    • @stanleymyrick4068
      @stanleymyrick4068 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It is. There is a lot more to it than drugs, but it is definitely about drugs too. He even said he was sick, and a doctor gave him some drug that let him help him do a show. But since he doesn't specify that in the song (of course), it goes to any drug that makes you comfortably numb, specifically needle type. And a person can take what they want from it.

    I've always thought of this song as more being about depression. It's a song my brother related to a lot when he was depressed. The idea of "the child is grown, the dream is gone". I always saw the parts that sound like drugs as being about your brain's self defence mechanisms blocking you off and building a wall around you.
    In the album both interpretations are pretty valid imo.

    I like your little story about when you were ten and didn't originally like that song! LOL.
    That's kind of like how I originally didn't like 'Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back', especially during the Dagobah scenes and I thought that part was so boring- I WAS SEVEN / EIGHT. LOL.

    Bless you! (for the sneeze) Pink Floyd is and has been my lifelong favorite group, I'll be turning 66 later this month. A lot of their lyrics are also excellent and deep. It's sometimes good to read the lyrics along with a song after you have heard it the first time so you don't miss the meaning, which is an individual thing.

    There is a cord going from (the lead guitarist) David Gilmour's heart to his guitar.
    Makes that guitar literally sing.

    i was lucky enough to see the Pulse tour in Vancouver BC with 80,000 other folk. 80.000 like minded souls dancing together and sharing a magical moment in time together. It was a beautiful feeling.
    Just one dumb, drunk mofo that got his ass stomped, the other 79,999 people were all in love with each other. Magical

    You made some good guesses from the info you had, BUT, that is a doctor asking the questions. This is part of a soundtrack for the Pink Floyd movie "The Wall" and in the movie "Pink" has lost his sh%^*, lost his mind, smashed up his hotel room, and overdosed on drugs.
    The manager and the doctor bust in, the doctor gives "Pink" a shot... "that will keep you going for the show..." and they head out to the concert but "Pink" is still not in touch with reality... called "disassociation".
    Anyway, yea, your drug interpretation does fit...
    And one day you should sit down and watch the movie. But Do Not Do Acid. No no.. they will scrape you up in a rubber basket if you do that.
    --
    You can research the meaning behind the movie but in short one of the band ended up having severe mental health issues and had to leave. The Wall is kind of a tribute/address of mental illness.

    For me this song is about the first time my Boy gave me Triple Widow pane and asked me all kinds of questions before we dropped Acid to make sure I could handle it! (The Greatest experience of my life) Even though some would consider me Highly successful now I would trade it all for that feeling of bliss!!!

    Bj got it right, This song is about the dealer man bringing round the baggy of N as they say here in Detroit Heroin. Just a little pin prick takes away the sick 🤢🤮.
    Still Love the song, don't get me wrong. Grew up on this 🎵🎶.

  • @ElusvOptmst1

    This is about drugs, but not in the context of what you think. One of the band members wrote about experience of being sick and the doctor relieved his pain with drugs. Your interpretation is a bit off. Many have taken substances with Pink Floyd music to enhance their experience and others just chill with it naturally. Also please watch the live Pulse concert. You will not regret it. This groups is genius. Another great live performance by PF is Pompeii I and II unbelievable, in their younger days. Great stuff.

    Roger Waters said the idea for the song is based on his experience before a concert . He had abdominal pains and was given a shot to help him get on stage. His arms went numb for the whole concert. In the movie the character 'pink' does have drugs issues , confusing the meaning of the lyrics. Hate when I see ' it's about heroin' in the comments. As far as I know Pink Floyd members obviously dabbled in drugs like LSD and weed , but none were ever heroin addicts.
    Cool reaction

    ....to know part of the storyline for this song....you'd see that the show promoters have injected the "buzzed out" lead singer (Bob Geldof in movie) with a morphine type drug to get him "awake" . I'll say this: half like the movie; half don't. But it sheds light on the song's story.
    The Wall ~ The movie.
