The Lynchpin Project - respect and disrespect vs. the reality

Terrence Howard offers $15000 to make a lynchpin fly with multirotor parts, Joshua Bardwell announces the project, and today Drone Mesh says that this whole affair disrespects the community. If this does not sound like a drama, then I don't know what does.
Let's talk about the part of the community that does not feel disrespected, is this worth the money ($15000 is not that much), can this be done in around 1.5 months, and what exactly has to be done.
If you decide to participate in the lynchpin, here are some practical pointers as well: standard PID, gyro, accelerometer, and a dynamic mixer.

Completely off topic: $45 in Rotor Riot store for a few 3D printed parts and sticks for the frame model is quite a lot to be honest. But it's my personal opinion.

I hate this trend to see everywhere reasons to be offended. Somebody offered a cool challenge, like on a hackaton - the more such challenges, the better. It would be pity if people would stop coming up with ideas and to proposing prizes for solving them in a fear to be called disrespectful.

The problem is not in challenges and how much money they might generate... the problem is who is initiating those challenges. Are we talking about that Terrence Howard? "Serial wife beater"? The challenge is indeed an interesting one, I'd love to see a drone that can rotate in any direction without moving and move in any direction, but the negatives outweigh the positives of the challenge. You've only got about 6 weeks to come up with working prototype of a whole new concept of drone where you end up not owning the end product? And only $15,000? Someone with patents on such a drone could make a fortune and the creator not see a penny.

Your analysis of the way the mixer must operate is one reason I find this project really fascinating. But it does help explain why maybe the $25k prize is not enough for the work involved. To say, "you just rotate the mixer based on the gravity vector" sounds simple but if the gravity vector is always affected by centrifugal force, it seems like the mixer will be really confused when the aircraft is moving and this can result in a feedback loop that makes the aircraft unstable.

    • @FPVUniversity

      1st substract taxes :)
2nd there is not that much time until the deadline
3rd there is no guarantee of winning
4th idea to rotate mixer is simple, math behind it will not be. Euler math is rather a no-go, quartenions have a better chance of succeeding
5th yes, gravity vector will shift and I mention that compensation of that will be required
6th I bet a few PhDs could be made from this easily
7th I doubt there will be an interest from investors/governments etc about this since this idea makes quite inefficient flying machine: too much dead weight and complexity
      8th it's an interesting contest I agree
9th have I mentioned very little time?
I bet someone will make it fly, but my guestimate is that will not fly great and there will be no free rotation in all directions

The people that i think would feel disrespected would be the customers of RR kwadbox, disrespected by Rotor Riot. This situation has been bugging me for 2 days straight now since I watched and re-watched Bardwell's video.
$45 for the prototype Lynchpin frame is ridiculously overpriced for the raw components: 22 carbon rods and 17 3D printed corners. Where are the STLs for us to print our own?
As for the geometric aspect of this thing, here's part of the transcript of a Lynchpin video by Terrence:
"You know I've spent most of my life searching for the perfect geometry that properly defines the nature of space and time. It's the same unseen geometry that is the cause of all of the effects that we have always observed of natural phenomenon. It's the same geometry that Davinci and Copernicus and Capron and Archimedes and Pythagoras, all these men of old and men of great fame and note, they searched also for the perfect geometry. Well the Lynchpin is that perfect geometry."
Uhh that bit about his frame being the perfect geometry? I tried recreating it in my 3D editor I use for making 3D prints with, attaching 6 pentagons together and they just can't fit like that. Either there's gaps between the pentagons or you have to modify the angles of the pentagons to make them fit into the shape of the Lynchpin.
Then there's the guy's history involving women. Not nice reading.
So when Bardwell's livestream with Terrence happens, I'll definitely try to be there, throwing questions into the chat that will be difficult to answer.

i = M * o, where i = vector of requested inputs (requested linear and angular accelerations), o = vector of thrusts of each separate motor.

The biggest problems with his design of the lynchpin is that the rotors inherently interfere with eachother and have a non-optimal angle in terms of the thrust that is generated by e.g. moving in one direction. This makes the design quite ineffecient. Even if in space, this design is actually not likely to be the optimal solution since there is never even just one single thruster/propellar that is pointed in the exact opposite direction of the moving trajectory. The structure is constantly fighting against itself and basically "collapsing" inwards which results in a notable loss of energy and an increased need of structural material to sustainably support this structure. Some of these problems could be mititgated by having thrusters/propellers on a rotatable axis as seen with other omnidirectional drones, but this just makes the design even more complex and inherently worse than the more "normal looking" omnidirectional drones on the market such as the Aerix drone. Additionally, in space, the lynchpin has to have thrusters that can thrust in two directions at each of the protruding pentagons or circles as he has also designed it as. Here on earth though, it has to have either the same configuration as in space or opt for very ineffecient propellars that are two-way compatible. Nonetheless, this design implies the use of 12 thusters/propellers compared to only 8 in e.g. the Aerix drone which can achieve the same results althrough it comes with it's own set of disadvantages. also, the "swarm" effect that terrence says the drone is also intended for is actually very inefficient as a lot of the lynchpins thrusters/propellers will become inoperable and closed of from the exterior. So if high material and energy consumption, cost, complexity, and ineffeciency is not a problem, then this design might be of good use. I will credit some inginuety as it seems to be novel and somewhat usefull in niche situations.

A cube would be a better shape, because by recessing the 6 props slightly inside the center of each outside frame square of the cube (like a tesseract upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/Schlegel_wireframe_8-cell.png ), you'd have the same landing on any side arrangement. But here's why a cube would be so much better: Standing on a corner, all six sides would be producing thrust. It gets more interesting and far more doable, when instead of one propellor per side, you put a whole 4 propellors or a quadcopter per side. Imagine a 6 sided die with every side being "4" or 4 dots and you get the picture. A standard flight controller runs each side, but the computer but each is programmed to be 90/180/270 off axis, so when you're holding it level, every single side is leveling itself offset and related to it's location on the side of the cube its on (Airmode on). When you change inputs on your stick, that goes to the flight controller int he center, the mixer if that's what you want to call it, that sends out the individual commands to each flight controller of each quad on the sides.
The downside of this arrangement is what you'd get with a lot of these type arrangements... a lot of dirty air and thrust passing through the center.
Other fun geometric 3D shapes, that are even better than a cube: www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=12+sided+dice

Hmm, I like your thoughts on the subject, the angle you took, and the way you went over it. I am thinking of a different way about the "skeleton". To me, the main issues outside of what you said are also about: how to make it modular; power it; how to link it to others, so they did not get in the way of each other; share power between connected parts, resonating issues within one unit and then many; forced loop feedback; the gyroscopic effects of all the different rotors acting upon one another in any orientation; and many others that just make my head hurt. The code needed to make sure all things "listen" to each other, start and stop properly, and do it smoothly is way beyond my level of abilities. I also do not think it will be small. First prototypes will likely be very clunky due to the power/weight ratio and the expected features. To your point, I do not think it will be quick as I do not think many of the parts are readily available.

The main issue with it is the rights grab involved - if there were no rights grab and it were simply a contest to develop software/hardware, there would be no issue. Given the rights grab, it looks like there is commercial incentive behind the contest - so $15k or $25k for a month and a half of SW/HW developer time at ~80hr/week just isn’t covered.

The mixes for 3 rotational axis would be actually stay static (without motor-tilting). The problem is the need for rotating the thrust vector relative to gravity AND user input wich would require to have 3 additional (static) mixes for the translational axis.
This should still be solvable within the given time frame by 2 smart kids (that have a basic idea about the betaflight code base) working full time.
Now someone needs to design, build and learn a 6-axis controller to fly that thing the way it is supposed to (6d) and that will not happen ;-)

Just looking at it I can see that it's plausible
I already created a mixer (fixed and dynamic in my head) and I can already see problems.
there are configurators that can support this but can't because they are severely limited (inav, betaflight, cleanflight, ardupilot) that means you need to create your own filmware and if you manage to create it now you need to make your own flight controller because premade ones are limited in I/O pins, ok but how are you going drive motor esc? With Dshot to have reversible motors, ok but motors don't behave well in low throttle conditions and only way to remedy this is to make sensored motor, ok but you can't buy sensored esc with Dshot support so you need to make your own esc and filmware for that esc, And to top it all off, you need custom trazmitter (3 control sticks).
    Let's sum this all up
    You need custom flight controller,
Custom filmware for said flight controller,
    Custom configurator for said filmware,
    Custom esc's,
    Custom filmware for said esc's,
    Custom motors,
Custom trazmitter that has 6 analog outputs.
And the winners will be people that have shit ton of cash already that have huge labs and big team's.
Also the min number of mixers whould be 6.
Good luck finding a microcontroller with enough memory and proccesing power
Edit: I figured it out using two mixers
(One for all orientations and one sweeping through the first mixer dependent on accelerometer values)
But since I love a good dumpster fire I will wait and see what turn this scam will take.

    • @FPVUniversity
      @FPVUniversity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Am, it's not that bad. BF or INAV can be used for radio input and 3 axis PID as well as drivers for all the hardware.
      - almost all ESC can work in reversible mode
      - most FC can run 6 motors
      - all RC motors fits
      - you need 3D props
      - and a clever way for another degree of freedom from the radio
You have to build the dynamic mixer though

    • @blackturbine
      @blackturbine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FPVUniversity bf and inav won't let me use custom mixer, let alone s dynamic one
Only way we could get somewhat dynamic mixer is in inav using logic tab to get it shift between different mixers.
It whould be rough but It whould fly...
Forget what I said inav won't arm because custom mixer can't be verified.
If you need help I can create mixers and help in software development but this means creating new filmware from ground up
Also for this aircraft to work all propellers must be clockwise or all counter clockwise
      No exceptions

    • @impmeister1
      @impmeister1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You dont need a custom configurator if you write the firmware. Just hardcode it into the firmware.

There is said a lot about the shape, almost like its holy, the gateway to sacret bla bla bla. Feels very annoying. But beside that I don't think this shape is that efficient. 1 prop in a bol or 3 props in a bol would make for more efficiency. This shape only works in space is my guess, sinds there is no gravity, so no waisted 'weight'. But then again, spaceships already can move to anywhere without the limit of angles (in perspective to down). I like the let's solve the problem contest... But still feel annoying by the actor talking about it like I'm watching a Cult leader.... Just my 2 cents
