  • There's a gradual change taking place in rural India and it's showing itself in eating habits, travel behaviour, and access to basic amenities. This change has insights for both the government and companies, Deputy Editor TCA Sharad Raghavan explains in #StandardDeviation.

Airport share of the bigger airports is falling... ppl in bigger cities are spending on better cars, and opting for travels by road, which is more economical for families with more than 4 ppl. Also since big city lives are busy, ppl see it a good way for family bonding. This also validates the road infrastructure that went through an overhaul and ppl of India are completely in awe of the countryside beauty.

I think Print is the most neutral media currently available in the mainstream. If you look at Times Now, NDTV always praising Modi and if you look at Newslaudry, Quint always bashing Modi, undermine or hide India's GDP, hide Sandeshkhali, hide Peaceful's peaceful activities like UP double murder, Bengaluru Shopkeeper beating etc. But Print try to present both sides, but it is true that sometimes they invite some radical Andh Vidrodi also.

Yes there is a marked change in the income levels of the rural folk.(its a crime to say rural poor in south India at least ). In My village today every household owns at least one two wheeler. Many own a car. The best part of the two wheeler revolution in villages is that they use it to improve their productivity in agriculture. The two wheeler enables them to reach the farm in lesser time than what they would spend on walking to work. They use the two wheeler to transport fertilizer, farm products to and fro from their farm and fields and market. 90% of them use tractors, farming equipment and back hoe loaders for agricultural purposes, reducing the dependence on farm animals. Every village in India has more than 1 JCB. Most of the villages have RO water facilities and the current trend is for families installing RO machine in their homes. 90 % of the homes are concrete buildings and other on the way to transition from thatched homes. 100 % homes own a TV set. more than 50% own refrigerator. They use the refrigerator two store milk and other farm produce. 80% of them send their children to convent schools in nearby towns. (A big failure on part of the government that it could not or does not want the transformation of education sector, which could have been the real game changer in the rural India. This can increase the farmers income 10times.). They use Autos to travel to work outside their village during their free time. The average consumption of Chicken and mutton in villages has gone up phenomenally , maybe what explains the drop in consumption of staples.
And you can see the real development of villages and the role education plays during festival times when the children come back to their native places without fails. The joy and pomp visible in their celebrations tell a lot about the rural change.
The last but not the least change in huge jump in the consumption of liquor in villages which quantifies the rise in their income levels.

If income levels of rural India increase, their expenses on essentials come, then it is a good sign. Eating packaged food, taking carbonated beverage and unwanted travel are not. its time people familiarise with what to trust, when to trust and whom to trust, why to trust, Trust, honesty and community living exists in rural india even today. Food and water security are two essentials which can stir up a revolution if mismanaged or misreported. It would be worthwhile for presenters to provide graphs or charts on a relative basis covering every ten years so that communities can understand where they are today. from 100 taps to 1000 taps does not mean much if the covered population expanded from 15000 to 20000 in the same period. producing content which makes sense easily is tough , expensive and time consuming but its worth it as it gives population a chance to focus on things that matter.

Consumption of greater quantities of packaged food and bottled beverages could be disastrous where healthcare infra is particularly poor. And rising footfall at smaller airports could simply be a result of absence of such airports up until now. Only the airlines can tell whether operations out of such airports are profitable. It's also a stretch to take rising footfall at such airports as an indicator of village folks growing a fondness of flying.

If you pause at 2:25 - the data for avg monthly expenditure has tripled from 11-12 to 22-23 (11 yrs). Comparing 04-05 to 2009-10 -it had roughly doubled in 5 years. Next, it had grown nearly 40-50% in 2 years to 2011-12 (so keeping pace). By that pace the expenditure should have gone 4 times in 11 years. So isn't it slowing down? Ofcourse for the first time the percentages of somethings will cross some made up point (like food dropping below 50%) but what kind of analysis is this? It is slowly supposed to come down anyway. You should discuss how fast is it falling.

Every house has a water connection in BBMP limits enough for 2 families of 8 members in 1200 sq. feet plot or 4 families of 16 members in 2400 sq. feet space - ideal case, but due to Developers greed , a 2400 sq. feet plot now 16 houses 64 members at least 4 times more ( some even 108 members ). Hence they depend on borewell in addition to piped water. Borewell water can supplies 70% of Apartment needs with Piped water covering the rest . This is in a small Apartment case. In Large apartments with 700 households that are entirely dependent on Borewell water and very less piped water or no piped water and they depend on tankers as they collect Maintenance amount at 5 Rs - 8 Rs. per sq.ft area of apartment..So if rains fail this is bound to happen . In addition catchment areas and storage areas have now been concretized allowing no water seepage..It is not as if Jal Jeevan mission failed , it is just that Jal Jeevan could not meet the needs of greed... Please take this input ..No offense meant

India needs to de-urbanize. Our approach to development shouldn't be urbanization. There's too many problems with current approach. Government should support work from home, make rural land more usable, focus on basic necessities (which includes internet and fast connectivity). India has a lot of land but ofcourse we can't afford to be densely populated, more and more Indians are living in shity conditions in mega cities because they have to work there. If we crack progress with de-urbanization we can become one of the most beautiful place on planet

Tribal communities in India have faced historical marginalization and lack of recognition. Factors include limited access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, leading to socio-economic disparities. Additionally, issues like displacement due to development projects and inadequate representation in decision-making processes contribute to their marginalized status.

600 Eklavya model residential schools have been opened by the Modi govt's tribal ministery, which will run like Navodaya Vidyalaya but for tribal students. And they have just recently appointed 10,000 people staff in these schools. Which were recruited via exams last year.
Something so magnificent is being done on the ground yet you refuse to see it. Blindness caused by Modi hatred.

I will suggest you to go to any village in eastern up or Bihar and see the consumptions by your own.
The mistake made by "Analysts living in cities" are almost always wrong.
Either you will see few data and paint some Rosy picture or some doomsday announcement. Neither will be correct.
Will give you one simple example -
If a family has 2 children then they are giving them Maggie, soup, momo, bread, etc.
This is not coming from some extra income or prosperity but from free grains savings, free money by state or central government, etc.
It is not an actual income and it is painting a false picture.
Also, people are consuming less Daal, meat or egg. If you check it properly, you will see that it is bcz if lack of money and it is causing malnutrition.
Maggie is cheap food to fullfill the belly.
