  • ‘When people are treated in hospital or another mental health facility, you are referred to as a ‘voluntary patient’ For those, such as myself, where you are ‘sectioned’you are effectively treated without your agreement.
It's a frightening time. I wanted to share my story to let those living with bipolar, in particular psychosis or mania, know that there is hope beyond being detained.
Bipolar UK has helped me, so that is why I’m appealing to you to allow them to continue their lifesaving work by donating here. www.bipolaruk.org/donate/dona... One of their generous donor's will double any contribution received between now and 31st Jan.'

I also want to say well done Luyando for speaking out so honestly on such an important aspect of the treatment of people with a mental health diagnosis. It must have been frightening to discover your liberty and freedom of choice were affected by being sectioned. I have experienced bipolar in my own family and think we still have a long way to go to break down the stigma.

Such empathy with this girl. She's brave and strong and beautiful. I am a white male, early 40s. I totally understand her story. I've lived almost my whole life hitherto not knowing I had bipolar. Always thought my depression was just something I kept returning to and only when I started to realise my "very happy" periods were probably hypomania and falling in and out of love so easily and episodes of hypersexuality did I realise I've got something more than depression and occasional alcoholism. A lightbulb went off in my head. I began researching bipolar. ... Every single thing in my life up til now showied me I had been undiagnosed & possibly since childhood- most certainly from my late teens.
Good luck to this lady and her journey. She's a star for talking so honestly about it.x

Absolutely heartbreaking. Been there, done that and got so many "T-Shirts" . When you get sectioned it's a really hard thing to comprehend, especially when you believe you have no place there. "I'm not like these people, they are crazy or ill" Is something that has gone through my mind so many times. I have been able to pretend so many times too that I'm fine and walked right out.
