Aussie here, one way to tell male from female is the females make a drumming noise. Males are silent.

Another odd fact about emus is they can’t naturally walk backwards. That is why they were chosen for the Australian coat of arms (kangaroos can’t either)

Also so wrird seeing people on the US keeping them as pets. Hardly anyone here keeps them as pets. But we love seeing them in the wild.

LOVE this video. We hatched ducks when our girls were young, and we graduated to emu - two eggs from eBay in 2016. One of the two hatched, and we used a daughter’s long yoga mat for the running pad. Couldn’t keep it, and it was flown to a new owner. Fun video. By the way, excellent advice on breeders. With our success in 2016, we tried again in 2017 - again on eBay - and those two ended up providing excellent (and EXPENSIVE) four-person omelettes. THANK YOU
This is a perfect example of the entitlement of some people. Even the fact eBay sells eggs is disgusting. Emus are wild animals and I see you are passing your entitlement on to your kids.
As an Australian we love seeing emus in the wild and knowing how emus live naturally seeing how uneducated fools treat one of our national animals is annoying to say the least.
Walmart has a Rubbermaid shelf liner and you can wash it. I have it on top of my makeshift island to prevent my bowls from slipping while mixing in my bowls then I go and throw it in the wash when I’m done and then I hang dry

@@OldReddingFarmYup, they can and do! This is how they (and many other birds) get to know who parents are and when to hatch.
I used to incubate my emu eggs. Then I found out they do better their selves. And they take care them . We live in Missouri.

We use the GQF Sportsman 1502. It's a really expensive high end model but it does a great job and has a ton of room. If you're just doing one, you could probably get away with an NR360, and some people sell a lid extension kit so that it sits a little higher up.
Um weather, whats TOO cold. Im.in Alaska and just starting to.look into maybe getting a couple Emu.
-10°C is the minimum they can tolerate short term, according to a farm that raises them nearby. So you'll need a heated coop of shorts for the colder part of winter, definitely... Can be just a few degrees over freezing.
I did great just letting mine he hatched out nine of them. He took good care of them you just don't want to try to touch a baby he is very protective he will go after you with claws out. I have never heard anybody pronounce emu's like you. so we're not dumb Americans it's just it's just you.
Hi new to watching your channel, enjoyed this, but one thing I think you didn’t mention is there diet. I have heard that they can only eat rattight food. And some fruits like grapes ( green mainly)

The word probably came from the Portuguese name for the Cassowary, "ema", which means both the Aussies and Americans have it wrong (though the Aussies actually get it even more wrong by saying it as "ee-myuu" instead of "ee-mu".
That is an etymological fallacy. A word is pronounced "correctly" based on how it is currently pronounced in English.
For example, all the KN- words in English, like knife, knight, knot, come from Germanic languages where the k was actually pronounced. Does that mean we are saying the *English* word incorrectly if we don't say it like a German or Dane did centuries ago? Of course not.
The origin of a word into a language has little to say about the "correct" pronunciation once it gets there, and pronunciation within English is fluid over time and geography. Both pronunciation and definition in English are descriptive rather than prescriptive, unlike many other languages.
Got into breeders market 2pairs, in 90's (Clinton era) had some fun until market crashed with new coops never getting off ground. One breeder pair produced 40+ eggs, 97 % "fertility" 40% survival rate chicks. Other 0 fertility 30 egg layer. Received 35k offer for hen, but declined but gambled market would go up. Everthing went to slaughter. Very good lean red meat and delicacy , fat rendered for oil which very expensive and healing properties. Good luck...

@OldReddingFarm yeah, if I had property or could afford it now absolutely I would have a pair or two. You could grab a handful of soft feathers @breast are make some flies for trout. Fatten up chicks have meat processed for you, sell for $15 or $20 a pound. Find a renderer for your fat (15-20lbs.) Adult. Sell it $12-$20 Oz.

I’m glad you showed the audience how to pronounce it. I’ve noticed that most vids on here about emu weirdly are made by American’s and every time I hear them say E-moo it kinda irritates me. I’m sure the other Aussies can relate. Makes me want to start calling buffalo, B-loos lol

I know it's not meat, because y'all said you don't do that. The alpacas are for fiber, definitely not these fellas. Non-mammal, so no emu-milk lattes. I guess the mob are just pets and you guys are being pet breeders? That's cool. It just seems like keeping and breeding farm animals is generally about more than just having animals to keep and breed.
Also, odd question maybe, but do people eat the unfertilized eggs like with chickens? I know it wouldn't be year-round, but it would be something.
We keep them for part fun part hoping we'd be able to sell the eggs some day. People definitely do eat the eggs apparently one emu egg is about the same as a dozen chicken eggs

@stompy15056 raise and fatten them up like you would cattle. Keep couple for pets. Delicious red meat very lean. Take or sell fat when slaughter for oil.

I'm an American (Texan), and I've always said Eeemyoo. Eeemooo sounds weird to me. And no, I'm not a farmer or breeder of them or anything else, so it's not like it's specialist knowledge or anything.
One thing that makes me sad as an Aussie is seeing animals being farmed and kept in the USA when we can’t even have them here were they are native. But good vid.

As an Aussie I can't watch this video. First they are not called Emooo. You know the correct way to say their name but you are too arrogant to do that. Secondly, they are wild animals and should not be farmed in the US.

How about how to pronounce them? If they could speak, they would tell you that they are expat Aussies and that is not how you pronounce "emu". It is offensive to all Australians - like running fingernail down a blackboard. I stopped watching at 0.23.
