House: you're arm got cut off, so what! You're either going to persevere or fail, make a choice instead of boring me with self pity. Romano: so long we're on the subject I guess overdosing on pain meds and begging my superior to babysit me all night is out of the question- House: That's Not the point- Romano: THAT IS THE POINT! Every time you stand for something you just show how much of a hypocrite you are, not to mention how much of an ass you can be. This patient doesn't need doxycycline he needs an OR so of you have nothing else to contribute then i suggest you move out of my way, unless you want to be using a wheelchair instead of a cane.
What a poor excuse of a human being much less a doctor. We all have our foibles and skeletons but he has refined the art of attention-seeking. Even negative attention was ok with him.. No empathy/sympathic care from anyone would even touch this man's soul. He'd so much like my brother who has gone onto, it is scary.
I feel the exact same way. But, I didn't play the character of a great surgeon. I can no longer do what I want to do with my life. Several major health issues. 😢 However, I will NEVER give up!
Yea, they made it sound like he had it coming. From my view, Robert Romano was not a bad person. While he was completely insensitive, often rude, and petty, he gave his patients nothing less than the best in care.
@@ksgnejgnk The scene where the helicopter fell on him was absolutely not only the most ridiculous scene in over 300 episodes/ 15 years of that series, but one of the most ridiculous scenes in all of television. EVER.
I miss Romano. You should have included the clip where Romano signs with Reese when Benton has his back turned. It showed his human side. Otherwise a GREAT vid for a GREAT character and actor.
I think after he lost his arm the writers largely made him very two-dimensional. I think that scene with Corday at the end was great and showed a vulnerability to him. He could not connect with people and was anti-social but being a Doctor was his way of making up for his failings. He did have a softer side; we saw it with Lucy's death, with Benton's son, and Mark Greene. He masked his true feelings behind a cynical exterior. His softer side should have been explored more IMHO.
But if they showed his soft side too much it wouldn't be special when they did it. Also you don't wanna take all the bite out of the character then they become boring. Boring is bad.
Tough to make a character a prick and be somewhat sympathetic at the same time. I spent a lot of my time rolling my at eyes at Dr Romano throughout the series. I think Paul McCrane’s best role was playing astronaut Pete Conrad, the commander of the Apollo 12 mission. Trying to remember the chronology of which episodes came first, but there was a Saturn V rocket model in Dr Romano’s office on the ER set.
Probably the most complex character they had on ER. They got lazy and wrote him out in shame. His job was to save lives. Like a drill Sargent he was ugly and repulsive. But when the time came to step up to the plate and save a life, he was the guy that ended up making you fearless as a doctor.
Ironically both Laura Innes and Paul McCrane went on to each direct an episode of House, especially since Greg House has the characteristics of Weaver and Romano.
ERs main characters always shared parallels with each other. It was one of the most unique things about the show. No one character was truly unique, even if they had a few unique qualities. This is why I will never believe that Dr. Romano was truly devoid of a heart. Like Dr. Weaver, and Frank, he was socially awkward, and something devastating had to happen in his life to turn him into the personality we see on the show. Because we see that he does have a soft spot for children in his interactions with Reese Benton. We also see he has a soft spot for animals when he desperately tries to save his dog. We see that losing Mark Greene actually does hurt him when he's choking back tears during his funeral, and when he gets frustrated trying to save a girl with cancer after reading "The Letter", and "Brain Cancer" is the first type of cancer listed in his monologue. Not by accident, either. We see his passion for saving lives in his frustration everytime he loses a patient. We see that he actually does care about the hospital staff when Carter and Lucy are stabbed, and he won't accept that Lucy is dead. In many ways, I think Romano had more heart than any of the ER staff. But he had a disdain for stupid people, dumb questions, and people killing themselves due to violence, and neglecting their health. I feel like many of the remarks he made were a byproduct of possibly watching a loved one (probably his mother, judging by the way he treated certain women) die due to addiction, or something preventable, and his problems with other men were quite possibly the byproduct of an abusive father. I think he got into medicine because he didn't want to be the same person as his parents. In the end, depression, and low ratings did him in.
"Lizzie, how much would you pay for my sperm?" "I beg your pardon?" "Oh, is that sexual harassament? Oh, oh my, oh." Hehe, I love Romano. His personality is so kick ass.
Great compilation!!! For everything one could have hated about him, there was still something about him... personally I really liked Robert, and Paul McCrane gave something to the character I think no one else could have. Thank you!
Some of my favorite moments in the show are the ones where Dr. Corday calls Romano on his b.s. A lecture about his crappy behavior is quite satisfying in a British accent.
Paul McCrane was great in this role. It does take a special talent to play somebody nasty and speak as fast as he does. I'm a fan of 24 though, so he'll always be Graem Bauer to me!
I do not recall seeing him in anything since this show. Too bad, he was very good. With his shiny head it is strange to think he was in the original Fame movie, which I just looked up and is from all the way back in 1980. 9/10/22
Thanks so much for that it was brilliant. Romano's great, one of my three fav characters - Romano, Melluci (someone needs to do a vid of him) and Greene
That last clip was so sad, but it summed him up at his core. When he had it taken away, I think it internally killed him and the helicopter just was finishing off what was left.
Oh, not always. Being the smartest guy in the room is a much more difficult burden than the rest of us realize...and that's why nobody usually looks out for that guy. This is the result.
totally agree with lifef on that one!!! and it was such a sad ending there cause it was true he was great at what he did...the show went downhill when they killed romano...RIP Rocket...miss u
Loved Rocket Ramano! I'm the same, except I love animals and not most ppl. Ramano was just like Dr. Geiger from the short lived medical show Chicago Hope. Remember Paul Crane's scene from Robo Cop..."I LIKE IT!" in firing the big bang bang as Clarence called it?
It was criminal the way they let him go, death by helicopter. Wasn't it bad enough he'd already been emasculated by one the year before? He was the best. R.I.P. Dr. Romano.

yeah the death scene was stupid, and unfortunately after this ER did get poor. :-( i still love it though and the final 5 or 6 seasons were still AS good as other tv shows...just not as brilliant as the previous ones!! i was SO shocked in the first episode of series 8 though. proper shocked!!!
Romano: you are one Grade A bitch Kerry do you know that. Weaver: No I am your boss and as long as I am you are my bitch, get your ass to work. That is one of the best quotes from Kerry.
They were a bit hard on Dr. Crater. Everyone Makes mistakes. He fixed his ways, and they while being a lot more careful, should have been a bit kinder.
morris was smokin' a joint when romano saw him. he took it away from archie and dismissed him. told him to wait for him so they could talk. romano was contemplating using it when the noise of the copter made him look up .. it was just tooo sad that he had to die, especially that way. that was wrong. one copter took his arm and half his life... and now, another was coming to take him completely ...
Paul McCrane was phenomenal as Rocket Romano. He took a loathsome ass of a character and actually made us like him
I don’t think I liked him so much as I found his assholery amusing.
Has anyone else ever wondered what a conversation between Dr Romano and Dr House would be like?
😳 Imagine House with his cane and Romano with his prosthetic arm.
@@anthonymendez1997 Oh yes that's another thing they have in common
I would love to be a fly on the wall for that conversation.

Me too

I Love Paul McCrane. Great Actor!!!
Dr. Romano was my favorite doctor.
I'll buy that for a dollar.
"Sorry, did you not get the memo?"
"What memo?"
"The one that says I run the place."
Brilliant. Romano was my favorite.
David Hanton
My fav moment of Romano is where he sign language's to Reece
Romano was a great character. It's a ridiculous joke that they killed him off the way they did.
McCrane wanted to move on and I don't blame him. Besides, the guy is super talented in front of and behind the camera.
Producers respected him and basically let him choose his own way of going out. He has directed a lot of episodes from a wide variety of shows.
@@michaelmuldowney8 yeah but a helicopter exploding and falling on him is sooo stupid for a hospital drama.

I loved watching Romano with Lizzie I mean Elisabeth she was the only he was real with he totally loved her
He was a hard character to like, but I liked him. =)
Wendi K. That was the point of his character. His acerbic jibes and insults were meant to provide comedy relief.

Funny to see Glen Halverton I can’t help but see him as Dennis from Its Always Sunny.
