Does anyone know where the tradition of having the young drum major came from?

I think that during the era all the drummers were boys in both the French and British regiments. I recall reading who they would be the ones at the head of the French columns when advancing into the lines of British volleys and be among the first to die. I know of a former Lt Colonel in the Royal Artillery started out soldiering as a Drummer Boy and also comedian and actor, Norman Wisdom said he did as well.

@@Richard500 I'm sorry. I should have been more specific, the drums that the Border Regiment is trooping were captured from the French in Spain. For years, they would troop them regularly and the drum major would by the youngest boy in the regiment. That was what I was referring too. You are quite correct, many boys started out as drummers and many of them died young. However, at least in Wellington's Army, grown men were also drummers and, in fact, they were the men that delivered the lash when that was the punishment. There are some old Pathe films of the young drum major. Look for Bordon, the history of the Border Rgt, etc.. Best regards...

The King's Royal Border Regiment playing the french anthem ? No wonder it was retired.
