  • Today I'll be showing you how to grow Mamey Sapotes from seed with updates right through to 2.5 months old. These large, unique, tropical fruits grow well in a tropical and subtropical climate. I live in a temperature climate, but I’m having a go anyway! I’ll be showing you the fresh seeds, how to plant them and what type of soil I’m using. We’ll then see how long they take to sprout and watch them grow. The seeds I have come from a cultivar called Pantin - this variety is grown a lot in South Florida. The fruits are orange with big seeds and are said to have a very unusual taste and are often compared to sweet potato, pumpkin, almond, vanilla and honey - very strange and unusual fruit! Colder temperatures are not their favourite, but they are said to survive to about -1 degrees C or 30 F.
These fruit trees are native to Cuba, Central America, southern Costa Rica, Mexico.
Mamey sapote are also known as Mamey, Mamey Colorado, zapote colorado and zapote rojo and Pouteria sapota.

I was born in Mexico and grew up in Southern Texas. My mom and my sister always spoke about a mixture of fruits that we could not buy here. When I was a teen the supermarket here started purchasing more international fruits. A few months ago the supermarket has finally acquired mamay. I remember eating it once a long time ago and to be able to finally eat them again as an adult in the U.S. is incredible. My seed actually started sprouting inside the fruit so I planted and the plant is already about 5 inches tall. Thank you for this video!!!

I’m growing my own now using your video! I used my fruit in a smoothie.
      This makes about two servings:
      1 mamey sapote
      500mL oat milk
      1 tsp vanilla extract
      2 tbsp sugar
      A few dashes of cinnamon
      About 6 ice cubes
Add ingredients to blender and blend until you get a yogurt consistency. so delicious!

milkshake or icecream are the ways to go with it, its so good. Persimmon would be the closest i think. (i just had persimmons for the first time a week ago, first thing i thought was huh, tastes kinda like mamey.) I can see pumpkin though.

Here in Puerto Rico they have a slightly different flavor but then, the seeds I have are nearly four times larger than what this gentleman here is showing. The fruit itself is about the size of my head. The flavor is like a cantelope, mango and orange all mixed together.

It's strange to hear of its taste being described as such, but it makes sense haha. It is my favorite fruit. As a kid, we used to have a large backyard with all kinds of fruits in Cuba and Mamey was unlike any other. The tree grows massive, so it will take a long time, but so definitely worth it. I hope they produce fruit for you all the way in New Zealand! Once you have the fruit, use them for a shake or visit any Cuban in Miami and ask them to make you a "batido de mamey" (Mamey shake). That way, you know if it's up your alley!

Living in Miami, Florida we enjoy mamey as a shake. We add mamey(fresh or frozen)to a blender along with ice, sugar and milk. You can experiment on quantities but its not very difficult to do. It is a delicious way to enjoy this fruit and also interestingly enough I find the shakes to be very refreshing and a way to cool down in our steamy weather and they also go very well with our fritas(cuban burgers)! Enjoy!!

  • @BBradshawProductions

I eat the smaller variety, they're the size of a lemon, but the large variety is as big a papaya.
The seed you have is one of the bigger variety. There is one variety of mamey seed that's twice as big and long as the one you used.
The tree you used is quit big. I think if you use the lemon size fruit size tree, you can grow a smaller fruit bearing mamey tree in a big pot in the yard or indoor.
    They are delicious!!!
The papaya size mamey sapote fruit sells for about $39 USD per fruit weighting in at 4 to 5 pounds in California. I prefer the small ones, which is cheaper per pound.

    1 cup mamey
    1 cup almond milk
    1/2 cup ice
    1 tbsp sugar is optional
If you can grow them and have the space, you would have a gem in your yard. They are very healthy and beneficial. I will say the fruit takes time to give but I have been given mameys the size of footballs. In short, its delicious if you haven't tried it--you are missing out.

Actually found them available here in Brooklyn NY on my grocery delivery service. I'd never heard of them. But we have EVERYTHING here in NYC and I'll bet they have been available in neighborhoods with populations of people who had eaten them in the countries from which they came. They are, I think, quite delicious. The flesh looks like papaya (the orange fleshed kind), but it has the "mouth feel" of sweet potato. It does, indeed, taste like sweet potato, but I think it has hints of papaya. Those other "notes" some people detect are subjective. As long as the flesh is soft, it will be akin to very, very sweet sweet potato.

I’m from El Salvador, unexplainable flavor, we have some that look like watermelons, I’ve only found small ones in the US, the waiting game is long but it’ll be worth it

Not just the taste, but the texture -a meaty, juicy, sweet, full bodied bite of paradise. This fruit is common in Guyana.

Just tasted my first one. It had the texture of a cooked sweet potato, was very sweet with an almost chocolate-like flavor.

I found these fruits at a Mexican supermarket here in Southern California and bought one. I think it was about $3, which is a bit expensive for what it is. Unfortunately, I cut it open before it was ripe (it was not soft enough, flesh was dry and hard like a sweet potato) but the smell was amazing--just like almond extract! I plan to attempt to grow this tree for its beauty and shade, and if we still live here in 7 years, we'll eat it, too.

They grow well in Mexico, here they are rare in South Temperate side of Aus for $20+ per kilo (that’s about $14 usd).

Hi, in Mexico and love this fruit, enjoying it everyday. Seeds are very large and yes quite often you will get two seeds in one fruit. Enjoy this delightful, healthy breakfast treat any chance you get.

Grew up with these in the Dominican Republic. It's a beloved food there. In Latin America we pronounce it maa-May. In DR it's most commonly known as zapote. We love having it as a shake. When Dominicans prepare desserts we typically replace regular milk with evaporated milk giving the shake a thicker and richer taste.

Very interesting please keep us updated with the Mamey Sapote plants, I think they taste like a very sweet, sweet potato/pumpkin more fruity less savoury with other minor complex flavours of its own with sort of crystallised sugar texture as you chomp on it. I grew one from seed it grew 1 metre in the first summer purely outdoor in ground now. It’s 3 years old now after the first winter handbrakes went on no growth since first winter in late summer almost autumn it puts on new beautiful leaves then yellows in winter sometimes drops same thing again next summer/autumn. I’m patient hoping eventually with enough summers the trunk thickens & semi-acclimatised for some growth in future as I’m an extremely patient gardener as you are too it seems I’ll give it about 10years at least to see if it’s got any chance here (Syd, Aus)

I hope you got the red variety. Deep red. Super delicious. Tastes like a combination of sweet potato and papaya. I am also growing them. I received 4 beautiful mamey fruits and loved them so much I nurtured the seeds. It took over a month because they did not have root and I kept them on wet kitchen towel until I saw a little plant beginnig to show. One fruit had 3 seeds, another one one, and two others 2. I had some flooded in a storm, and yes they don't like excess water. After a week they are beginning to come back to life. I did an experiment with a seed that broke in half. I covered it in wet kitchen paper and to my surprise a plant grew from each half. I'm enjoying them a lot. These red ones are from the Dominican Republic. Good luck with your plants.

Thanks for the comment, that’s super interesting that the half seed sprouted and made 2 plants! The variety I got is called pantin, not sure if it’s the one you’re talking about or not...

South Florida here :) a slightly different, smaller variety just grows here in parks and along the streets, the seeds are about half in size as these on the video; they are supposed to be cracked a tiny bit before planting (otherwise the shell is too hard to let the seed sprout well): I wonder were pre-cracked or this variety does not require pre-craking of the seed prior to its planting?
