  • I started a bunch of seeds this winter for all of my spring annuals ... not only did I save quite a bit of money, but I had a blast growing the seeds! So this summer, I have decided to do seed starting for the fall ... saving money by starting seeds for fall color including petunias and marigolds.

    I only buy plants that I can’t find seed for. I start all my biennial seeds the first part of June. I start collecting seeds as early as May depending on when my spring flowers have gone to seed. I’m glad to see that you’re transitioning to starting most of your plants. I find it much more sustainable. Not everyone can do this but for those of us who can it’s very rewarding. Thanks for sharing your process.

    I love watching these videos! I am also in zone 8 about 2 weeks behind you in terms of temperature, so it’s perfect that whatever you are posting in your videos I’ll start them while I watch yours!!! Thank you!!

    Lawd I just went to one of the sites your video from yesterday recommended and bought a bunch of seeds. I can’t keep up! I like to go along with you, Amanda, to compare. 😅… And of course for all the insight and info you give. Thanks!! ☺️

    You should save your marigold and petunia seed. If you plant a hybrid it won't be true to seed but it will still be beautiful and won't cost you a cent. Many years ago I planted several marigold plants that I got from a 50 cent pack of seeds. I usually get a full gallon sized Ziploc bag full of seed from each year from the descendants of these original plants. I save a small amount for myself and give the rest away. It makes my ❤ happy.

      That’s a great idea and definitely a cost saver, thanks!

    I got zero germination on my Marigolds for spring lol Those deep red petunias are gorgeous! I hope they all germinate and bloom like crazy for you :)

      Marigolds have such a low germination rate!!!

    I wish you luck on your marigolds. I'm in zone 7 and I've only had 1 bloom on my marigolds I planted from seed. Only leaves. They get as much water as my other garden plants, in full sun and nothing. Best of luck.

    Is 90 degrees too hot to start seed outside if placed in an area with a Northern aspect and seeded in protected containers such as those you are using inside? Lots of seed packets indicate the minimum temperature for germination but rarely indicate the maximum temperature. I've had more success germinating inside, but can't help wondering why, due to all those vegetable scrap seed germinating in the compost bin.

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would think it’s too hot for these two varieties.
