I think the reason that many players see the Champion as too simple or weak is the lack of active traits. Everything the Champion does is automatic whereas many other subclasses have cool traits that the player can use as they see fit. Yes, the Champion is good for a new player because the mechanics are much simpler, but a mor experienced player might be looking for more agency. One of the bonuses of the Champion (other than the things you noted) is that they're great for new players who like to role-play. They can focus on that aspect of the game and mostly let the mechanics take care of themselves.

First time I've seen one of your videos. I personally think a champion build can be great as well. I missed the point you had with the half-orc, it's a great pick for champions. In light of that, I'm changing the build I've been working on from a variant human to a half-orc.
This champion uses a spear and a shield, you can be more defensive and still deal significant damage.
    Fighting style: Dueling.
    4th level: Pole arm master.
    6th level: Piercer.
    8th level: Crusher.
10th level: Thrown weapon fighting style.
any ASI after this point is used to bump stats. Sentinel is a good option but not really needed.
Beg your artificer or DM for a returning weapon infused spear in the game.
Piercer and crusher have critical hit changes: for piercer you get to add another 1d6 to your spear, for crusher all your allies get advantage on attack rolls against the target. Crusher also creates distance between you and an enemy that is large size or smaller, that means they have to get back in range to attack and if they do, you get a reaction to attack them on their approach.
Piercer and crusher also are half feats, so you can bump your strength by 1 each feat, or bump your strength with piercer and constitution with crusher.
At 10th level when you throw your spear you can add +2 from thrown weapon fighting and +2 from dueling. If you get a returning weapon that's 5+str+1d6, a crit with your spear will be 4d6+3(5 if thrown)+str.

That is indeed a cool build!

Great weapon master allows you to attack as a bonus action even if you score a critical hit; so it's highly recommended for Champion Fighters.

I created one like that. Fun to play and he pretty much kicks butt as the tank for a bard and a wizard. 💪⚔️

Initiative is a dexterity check isn't it? there's another thing Remarkable Athlete lets you add half your proficiency to.

It is either a dexterity check or a wisdom check I'm pretty sure you can use both

Are you only doing 5e or get into other games? Would be so interested in some mongoose traveller content,

Traveller is cool! 5e atm but open to making other TTRPG vids.

@@DiceLegenz I would watch other systems. Call of Cthulhu is a great system as well and TH-cam isn't flooded with vids on it right now like some systems.

    Give them a Maul.
Still 2d6, and bludgeoning damage is less resisted. Some undead are vulnerable to Bludgeoning damage

I really like all the flavor you can add to a champion.
I just made a rat kin champion fighter with the gladiator background. Im basing him off Queek head taker
We are starting at lvl 7 so i gave him the fighting initiate feat for an extra fighting style so currently he uses two weapon fighting and blind fighting and at lvl 10 ill take tunnel fighter and the plan is to duel weild khopesh' and stand in choke points have darkness cast on top of me and shred everything in range and boosting that further with the slasher feat when i can.
So i agree the champion is very simple mechanically but its because its so simple that you can really run with your characters theme and a champion can be anyone from a elven archer to a farm boy who happens to be the best in bis village with a sword

@@DiceLegenza better route would have been having the first player trip the demon with a shove attack, knocking it prone and allowing all the attacks to be at advantage. the champion could also do a shove attack for its first attack, followed by 3 attacks at advantage
