Everything That Could Possibly Go Wrong During A Photoshoot

- This shoot was a true test for me. Simply put, "When a planned shoot goes wrong." I brought out the Pentax 67 as well as that good ole Hasselblad 500. The Hassi definitely got more love out of the two Medium Format cameras, but in all I enjoyed the photos. All i'll say is, as a photographer be prepared to get kicked out in Beverly Hills when you are shooting in public. lol

This isnt a "praying on your downfall" comment but more of a "thank you" comment. Seeing someone as skilled as you fail and not be satisfied with a shoot is very comforting because when I have a bad a shoot i think its the end of the world but seeing you keep going through all the bs and seeing you're not perfect is amazing. Really brings me back to the real world. Thank you Mike
Of course Curtis. Gotta be transparent with the family.
I love the energy! I love how you did not give up with those inconveniences. It is so joyful watching your videos and seeing the connection between you and models, every of them feels really personal, which I think allows you to shoot with more comfort. I really appreciate how you show us not only perfectly done projects, but also those which had some obstacles. I totally can relate as one time when I was shooting, after finishing the roll of 35mm film I was so excited to take it out, load new one and get it developed, that I forgot to roll it back to the film container, so every picture was awfully overexposed and destroyed after I opened the back of my camera :(
I recon your book will be mine late Christmast present from me for me :))
all the best, thank you
Thanks so much bro.
That was a bummer losing the 10 shots..but on the bright side..it "could" have been a paid wedding shoot, in the church, when the ring is being slipped onto the bride's finger...never to be repeated! Now that is squeaky bum on seat frightening! Once again, great video, love them all! Best wishes David in the UK.
This is what is all about! The experience and the grind! It all make for a better story at the end of the day. No excuses 💯 everyone always makes it look so perfect that this why new comers think is easy.... Love it bro keep it up!📸📸📸🎞️🎞️🎞️💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Thanks a lot bro.
Great video as always, your transparency is always appreciated, instead of just being a “teacher,” you’re learning and teaching with us
Indeed man 🙌🏾
As soon as I heard that shutter click sound at 4:32 I knew it was going to be dope. Things happen in every session as we are striving for perfection and little things happen. You have the skills and the knowledge so the sky is the limit. Great content as always.
Thanks man!
ALWAYS VIBES WATCHING MIKE GRAY! Keep it up brother.
I appreciate you man
that's what im talking about! its the passion and dedication over everything. Shout out to the model for being patient with you and keeping it real. Love every snap bro. keep em coming!!!!
Thanks a lot family!
Always makes a good watch when things don’t go to plan, brings everything down to Earth proper.
Glad you stuck with it, fella!
I appreciate it Lee
Getting past the obstacles makes the final product even more rewarding!
Admiring the Hassy every single video Mike 🤤
Thanks so much!
Take this sub! Go for the 50k ma man, you have a great chill presence, and the shots were dope. Keep going! Its inspiring :D
I appreciate you Jan
Maaan that's dope, love the over the top shot in the grass and the one with the dress in the studio. Keep it up!
Thanks bro!
You gotta stay dedicated and motivated when the obstacles come your way. I love this video shows that not every shoot goes according to plan let’s keep it going.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
~6.000 views, only ~500 likes. What's wrong with people?
I love your grandiose, glamorous approach to these videos.
Thank you. I guess people are sleep, but it’s all good lol
What’s up bro it’s good to see you still at it!! Great content, yeah things happen for sure. I remember doing a photo session on a mall roof top and the security came and shut it down. I started to get upset but I realize that at the end of the day it’s not my property and I also understood that he didn’t make the rule he is just an employee doing what he was told. As creatives we can always find a way if we persevere and push through the obstacles and that is what you did and you got some good photos bro! No need to go in on the man Mike, 😂.. keep the content coming my guy!! GOD bless!!
Naw he deserved it. Hahaha thank you brother 😂
@@MikeGrayFilm 😂😂 No doubt your welcome MG!!
Bro the studio shots are amazing, they are my favorites of today video and if I had to pick one; it's the portrait. I like natural light but you studio work is inspiring.
I appreciate it bro
That Beverly Hills driveway shot!!!!! sheeshh🙌🏾🔥
Came out cold! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Great job Mike.
Thanks Liana
A shoot like this happened about a month ago for me 🤦🏾♂️ Here's a quick story. I rented out a studio for two hours and I had two models. One model was running late and I accidentally gave the wrong address to the other one. By the time everyone is there, I still had to setup. This leaves me without about a hour. In my head time is running down and I'm already stressing. So I get a few digital portraits and I move on to my RB67. The flash wouldn't go off every shot. It went off like every 3rd shot 😂 By the end of the day, I had four rolls of film. When I got everything back I may have had 5 decent shots out of four rolls. I definitely learned from this experience lol! I admire how you kept pushing throughout the whole day! I definitely need to have the same energy you had.
I forgot to mention too... I accidentally exposed a roll of film too that day and the photography store was closed so I couldn't buy more 😅
Sometimes we just gotta take our L’s lol
You all killed it on this video. The photos are so damn good. I got the vintage Cali vibes with it all.
Thanks a lot Derek!
What a beatiful opening. Sooo cinematic. WOW!
Great Job.
Thanks so much!
Thank you too and kind regards from Brunswick/Germany.
Sorry to hear you lost your roll. I know the feeling. The locations look epic! Great video
Thanks Eddy!
Damn man. Dope video and extremely nice pictures 🙌🏼
Thanks a lot man
This has happened to me before...I can relate. I like the photos. Great job, even with all the hassle.
Thanks David
Proof that you can overcome any obstacle of you put your mind to it😭🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man. That’s facts!
Last summer I scouted a immense poppy flower field at 10 AM. Went back at 10PM with the model and everything had withered and all gone...
So you power through but damn you had quite the streak of bad luck here ! And Still, managed to get dope shots man, you're an inspiration
Hey I asked for this! Thank you! Also, I like the song in the beginning. It’s almost like a Return of the Mack jazz edition. Dig it.
Thanks a lot!
Brother Mike, you are one classy young Bro! My term: KYB = Kool Young Brother! For you I have to add: KYB = KLASSY YOUNG BRO! Keep it rolling. Congrats
I can relate I was shooting some photos with my Nikon D3 and some crazy people came by in a old junky truck thinking I was taking a photo of their truck. They were yelling and screaming why are you taking a picture of our truck. It was crazy. I was taking photos of signs of businesses. I think when people take photos with anything other than a phone, they think your shooting a movie. Lol
Keep up the great work man!!!
Thanks a lot bro! You aren’t lying haha
Stuff like this happens a lot more often than people think and it's very important to share our experiences. Keep it up man!
For sure!
11:24 DAMN SON
My dawg! 🙌🏾
Still inspiring and motivating. There’s always downfalls in photography but its next step into making us better. Shit happened to me too 😂😂 Pentax broke mid photoshoot and had to switch to digital photography. But anyways the photos still came out amazing. Great work!
I feel your pain bro. TRUST! lol
Super dope Video. Thanks for that.
Thank you.
The Firts Location it's fireeeeeeee
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
11:23 was perfect timming damn!
Cheer up Mike.
At the end of the day you still have a Hasselblad and a Pentax 67.
You still massive drip, take fire photos and you're still Mike Gray.
You get up, you try again. Even on your worst day you create your best art.
Haha you’re a real one.
the shots that didn't make it were too good for the world to see maybe haha
lmao i wish that was the case Grayson
Dude, I love your videos.
Fantastic pictures again.
If it was closer, I'd come to you as an assistant anytime. 🙂
Thank you man
PREVIOUS TO THIS VIDEO, I'VE NEVER HEARD OF YOU. I CLICKED IT BECAUSE OF THE TITLE...AND BOY IM GLAD I DID!! YOUR SHOTS ARE DOPE AS FUCK!!! VERY IMPRESSIVE WORK MAN! LOVED THE VIDEO! SUBBED!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
-THE BLACKMAN ARMED WITH A CAMERA
Hey Mike, yet another great video. Question for you - Are you using the standard 80mm lens, or do you have a portrait lens?
Thanks. Yep! I’m using the 80mm lens for the Hasselblad.
I can't share all of my bad stories on here 🤣 but glad you persevered here
Lol I dan only imagine
The cheese when you held the portra box 🤣
“This jawn hittin”
Hahahaha
The black dress shot is my absolute favourite shot.
I love the at one also
I shot at same spots a couple months ago! got kicked out once! so we walked around the corner and back and recorded while walking so it looked like we were leaving. Can't let obstacles get in the way of the vision!
That’s facts!!!
cheeks clenched when you threw the Hassy
Hahahahaha
I live just up the Canyon from the hotel. Loads and loads and loads of tourists taking pictures all day long there.
I can tell 😂
I went to photograph an event and the entire theme was in black. I easily lost 1.5 to 2 stops of available light. I switched my mind over to fight or flight syndrome and I adapted accordingly. Low shutter speed and I asked the folks to really stand still to prevent motion blur. It worked out in the end.
That’s all that matters. It worked out 🙌🏾
Would love to see your book, picture books of film photography are underrated. I have Gordon Parks his early work publication I’ll add your book to my collection.
It’s on the way. That’s an honor man 🙌🏾
SMH Cried at dedication. It’s my favorite photo. How fucking powerful was @9:10 smh. Paused it like, wow. Anyway you already know dude. Much ❤️✊respect. From the ny.
Thank you!
@@MikeGrayFilm 💯
This was definitely one of the best model you have yet to use. Sorry for the rent-a-cop.
Thanks a lot man haha
-11:35 has to be my fav🔥
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Man, they gave you so much grief you got a single grey hair up top now 🥲
Hahaha oh I pulled it out
Ur goated
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I remember when I came back from my street shoot in the old town in turkey and on the way back home dropped my glasses to my optician, came back home, drank a cup of coffee and sat down to transfer photos to my laptop without my glasses. I sent it to the pendrive , then formatted my sd card and deleted the photos on the laptop. Guess what happened next,2 clicks and gone! I forgot to remove the pendrive from the laptop.
Two minutes went by and I kept staring at the screen. I felt so stupid.
It happens to the best of us!
wonder what happened to that roll man
who knows smh :/
Please more pictures in the videos
I’ll see what I can do haha
Brooo that also happened to me once but instead of 10 photos it was 36 cuz it was 35mm. Worse thing ever
oh no
prepare for the ride lol
Please make a strobe how to video for us.
I got you!
Bad shoot days don't happen often, but when they do...sheesh
Also this video made me realize I am a sucker for MILFs and I cannot lie.
Wonder how many people caught that Easter Egg at 6:40
Not me haha
everyone freaks out about audio but internal audio sounds great
I beg to differ haha
bro I had someone call the cops on me shooting with this male model for the first and dude never worked with me ever again lol
lmao that's the worst bro. sometimes we just have to take those L's and keep our head up! haha
@@MikeGrayFilm for sure bro! Nothing stoping us
we've all been there
True
@@MikeGrayFilm its like sometimes this has to happen to us to get us back on our game and be more focused.. but you gotta fight through those moments like you did
Worst shoots? You mean all of them so far?
Currently did a shoot for a Lodge. Was supposed to be 2 half day shoots, 8-10 rooms 20 edited photos by the end for $200.
Its turned into:
*8 Rooms
*Their Entire breakfast buffet
*Their conference room
*All their amenities
*General photos of the lodge
Its taken 4 days of 12 hour shoots. 41 Hours shooting in total for 50 images. They still want to pay me $200.
A 20 hour max shoot + editing is now 66 hours+ . And I'm not done :)
Literal exploitation in South Africa.
Also did I mention this is for their website and the increased revenue will bring in 100 extra bookings a year minimum
(they charge $250 per night per room).
So they will make $25,000 extra revenue *Minimum* per year because of a $200 "investment" in my work like???
Also I didn't set the price I wanted to charge $400 but they said their budget was half.
Never did real estate before so thought "sure its only 20 photos and a day of shooting" ........
Hate when shit happens but what’s worse is that rent a cop. My god can we do anything nowadays that some corporate bullshit doesn’t have a problem with.
That’s facts
Real things happen to real people
facts!
Me: *Takes out T7i*
Security: "PUT IT AWAY YOU NEED A $300 PERMIT"
The people next to me: *Taking photos with a 108MP S21 Ultra*
People are fk ing dumb
All day man
It's sad that in this day and age people still think it's good to wear / shoot fur coats....
Lmao
How castrating is it really to shoot in the West Coast? (everyone stopping you basically wants a cut $$$)
No lie
When all else fails, Cheat.
Hahahaha
Stop complaining. At least they're not shooting at you. Carefully plan ahead and learn some guerrilla tactics, that comes very handy sometimes...
