Ever wanted to make it as a concept artist? Work in video games, or maybe books, movies, tabletop games?
In this video, I explain what is Concept Art, what is Illustration, and help you choose the right one for you. What is Concept art, how to work in videogames, what is an illustrator? Those are things that I asked myself all the time when I was a student of animation. Now I'm happy to say that I got the privilege of working on my dream job as a concept artist and illustrator for the videogame industry, so it is my pleasure to solve these doubts in your head.

Thank you so much !!!
So an illustration is basically a personal interpretation of an already portrayed idea, while concept art is the very visual creation and portrayal of that idea. So yeah, in the end it depends on what kind of artist you want to be: To interpretate or to create. In the end, both are awesome, and it would be great to get to work on both things.
That is a nice explanation Kevin. The illustration has a lot of creation in it also, lots of times you have a lot of creative freedom, it is only if you are doing it for an intellectual property that has already everything defined, then you have to arrange this predesigned elements into the illustration
@@LucasPeinador Can you do both illustrations and concept art?
A lot of illustration still has to follow the style. For example you can see the difference immediately between a MTG illustration and a Hearthstone illustration.
It depends alot on what the art/design will be used for in regards to the final production the user will interact with.
No, I don't think this is correct.
Illustrator: man, i love my life!
Concept artist: For the love of god, somebody kill me!
Hahahaha a bit like that
I still like both D: decisions are hard
Hahahaha and that is fine Pocket! A lot of artists do both :) It is nice to have variety in your work.
So being a concept art, you must have a skills to draw perspective, furniture, buildings, scenery, characters, everything? That's crazy! I think I wanna be a concept artist, guess I'll have to practice more!
I mean you need those skills to be both what separates concept art and illustration is illustration builds from ideas made by the concept artist so concept artist has to be not only good at all of that stuff and good character and setting design
I used to work in a mobile game studio and we always had both concept artists and illustrators in the team. Concept artists are those who come up with idea of the design of environment, creatures, weapon but they're not expected to create the full rendered art, they only made sketches and detailed diagram of the design almost like how buildings architect works they created the blueprint of the design, then those blueprint sent to the illustrator to be reimagined as fully rendered art that will then translated into 3d model. It is almost similar to UX and UI designer in terms of role.
I like your explanation
so I think I do love both. I love doing an idea from scratch, and sometimes I love to just redraw or restyle the image or artwork that I've seen on the web, and create it as a new version of it.
I loooove painting big impressive settings and pushing all strong emotions out in the paintings. Thanks for the video, I know now what I want to do is illustration!
Before playing this video I knew that I didn't want to be a concept artist, but you helped me become more sure of that decision. Also you shared what would be expected of an illustrator, and it sounds like a lot of fun!
Illustration is perfect for me.
great, happy to hear that 👍
I think I really want to do concept art, but would like to try illustration👍🏿. Thanks for the vid!
You are welcome Demi! Give it a try! both of them are super fun
After watching your video, I do prefer illustration. But since I'm writing a novel series with everything built from scratch, and I want to make polished illustrations for some important scenes as well as for my covers, I will need to visually concept my characters and environment beforehand.
So! Which one do you prefer? 👇👇 Tell me below!
Concept art🎨 😊
Illustration
I told myself for years that I want to be a concept artist. But this video made me realize that creating a fleshed out illustration of a scene seems more fun than redeveloping an idea for one object or character several times. Idk, maybe I'll work towards both careers 😋
That is great Alexandra, I'm happy that the video was useful for your :)
thank you for the useful video! I will need to meditate on it a bit more but things are more clear now! I am about to start a particular art academy that offers these two courses: "Enterteinement Design + Illustration" or "Concept Art + Visual Developement". Both are really appealing to me but I really don't know how to choose! it seems like the first course is the perfect fusion of illustration and creation but the other one is more specific... so difficult!
I loved this video! I'm an illustrator currently studying concept art and at first I was so confused about the differences between the two. Very clearly explained!
Lol I'm still confused 🤣🤣
@@ferget9111 it is very confusing at first 😆
I really like this kind of content, I would like to hear more about artists in the gaming industries.
Thanks so much for this video!! I'm just a beginning artist, but I constantly felt like I should be working towards the type of work illustrators do when what I really love is concept art, I just never really knew the difference!! Even though the result of both is often similar, it's nice to see that I can look more at the coming up with ideas part.
Hey Grace, it makes me really happy that the video worked for you :) I wish you aaaaaall the good luck in your journey as an artist!
Omg I never knew that info about concept art and illustration being in completely polar opposite on the timeline of a production.
I love research , so yeah , it’s concept art for me
Thank you ❤
Happy that it helped 👍 haha yeah concept art is great 👍
Of course one cannot expect to be this good (examples shown in here) from the beginning. What would really help us beginners is if you cleared out "how to get started?" ( given that you have to start small, otherwise you will definitely be overwhelmed and might stroke out in pressure.)
Concise and awesome explanation. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Concept art = creates iconic designs
Illustration = presents those designs to the public
Yes, exactly
This helped me so much! I think I’m gonna go for illustrations! Subscribed too! Thank you
Awsome, happy it helped you
I just got out of college. I feel like I missed out so much cause I didn't really develop while I was there. Now I have no portfolio, I'm lost, I can't even draw heads properly. Jobless too. I wish there's a way to get free mentorship somewhere and you pay them with your first paycheck from your first gig.
That is a great idea Leinard, you could make it happen! I'm sure a ton of people would be interested
im in year 11 and i've been trying to work out what feild I want to go into in the art world, now I know; concept art.
Hey that’s awesome 😎 I’m sure you will like it
OMG, I Discoreved that I want to doing both disciplines: concept artist and illustrator :)
haha yeah... I understand
Thank you
You're welcome
I think both would be possible but id have to improve further on rendering and the finished look, but id probably lean more towards concept art in the beginning as I tend more to help start and conceptualize an idea than the finished end product
Both are fun, but yeah, if you prefer to work on the start of a project then concept is the way to go :)
This video solve my all confusion between illustration and concept art thank 🙆🙆
Hi! This video is really useful, thank you so much! But I have a few questions and I hope you could answer it🥺:
1) How do you get into the field for concept art and illustration?
2) Do concept artists specialised in drawing a specific item? (Eg the environment) Or do concept artists have to be very well rounded and be good at drawing everything?
I hope you’ll see my comment :)))
Hey Sheryy, thanks for the questiosn. 1- You get in the industry by making a great portfolio and aplying to studios. The best website for that is Artstation. There are open positions always. 2- The bigger the studio you want to work in, the more specialized you have to be (weapons, characters, environments, props...). But if you want to work on a mid or small size studio you do everything :D
@@LucasPeinador Thank you so much for replying!! I’m currently starting to look at Universities, but I’m not sure what course/subject I should study... do you have any recommendations?
@@sherryy2134 Have you taken any course?
Thanks for the breakdown Lucas.
Next, comic/manga vs animation
Uuuu that is a cool one!
huum, i think i would love to create characters, from my own mind and from other's minds too is that what concept art is in short ? creating trough descriptions instead of creating something which already has a foundation but giving it a bit more flavour, and detail and personality ?
That does sound like Concept art to me :)
I love your intro theme . Does it have full version
haha thank you, uff it is very old
Literally got an assignment on future career and I'm stuck between choosing one of these two
Ruan Jia on your screen!!
Holly shit!! I couldn’t tell the difference between the artworks :(
Hey Andres! Ikr! They both can look exactly the same~
Thank uuuu, that was really important for me ♡♡♡
Wonderful video ! Helped me a LOT to understand the difference :)
Thanks for telling the difference between concept art and illustration.
Also, 1,000th like on this video.
That is awesome, thanks for the comment Daniel!
This didnt help me choose😭😭😭😭 AHHHHH
Hahaha I’m sorry, chose both!!
holy shit is that ruan jia's art as your desktop wallpaper? that dude is mad
i really want to be a concept artist now
That is cool
thank you by the explanations
You are welcome!
Such good explanation
I wanna do both
haha yeah, I get it.... and if you like them both.. you can... I still do both
Great video !
great video thanx ^^
Glad you liked it!
yup, still confused about which path should I follow
haha that's okey
I will prefer illustration.... And really thanks for guidance.
Thank you very much ASIHWARYA😁
so far i stil prefer concept art but i have the skills to be illustrator right now
Oh, both are really cool, I think you can't go wrong with either one. I'm inclining more to illustration lately :)
Illustration
😁
I'm here because I've been accepted into uni and I've been offered a place on both art and concept Art they said it's up to me to decide. I only applied for regular art but they recommend me concept art at the interview and then offered me a place on it as well. I'm watching this to decide what I want to do.
i think as of right now, i suit an illustration job but i have a concept artist paste, but i think i wanna do both. so right now an illustrator.
Can you be both a concept artist and an illustrator?
yes! you definitely can :D I work as both
Both?
Both. Both is good
I don't know which to choose, my art is kinda... with an 'unfinished' style. Do I have to be very very detailed? How can I do it? 😭
great Video, is there a discord or a group where there are "Mock" design briefs on something that would be typically given to an Illustrator or Concept artist for a project...to do up some mock design work as a practice to hone in on skillset?
Awesome video..... I really prefer to concept art...... Is only representing idea on big canvas with big strokes is concept art? Because most of artist don't do much detailing by zooom in in the screen. ... .... I watch wlop videos... Is it's art is concept art or illustration..?
Nice video thanks for giving basic information about both arts type😊😊☺😊😍
Glad that you found it useful :) What is standard for concept art depends a lot on the style that the client is looking for. There are some studios that prefer sketchier and more experimental concept art, one example is ArenaNet (creators of guildwars). But other ones prefer veeeery finished artwork like NaughtyDog. Wlop, seems to me, paints mostly illustrations, the purpose is to have finished paintings for her patreons.
Much love, thank you for your comment
@@LucasPeinador welcome it really helped me🤗
This is good, thank you
Can procreate give you a good foundation in learning both?
👍Concept art.
It is a great field, and the best thing is that after that you can specialize even more, become concept artist for characters, creatures, props, environments! There are a tooon of options!
@@LucasPeinador +1
0:47 😂, nice video
hahaha
Thanks for the video!! and what am i supposed to do if i wanna work in both ??? 😅🤔 what career should I study🤔
What if I choose both? :3
You can definitely, I work as both myself :)
@@LucasPeinador Nice! I will do that and hope to survive.
Gotta say, I got really confused by the thumbnail lol
do you have to go to college for these two or can you just be really good from them looking at your profolio?
Is there a way to do both? Like i know you said in the video you can but how? I would love to do both at some point yk create design and sell my work, I'd like to start off as a concept artist but i also wanna do illustration, is that possible?
yeah of course, you can do whatever you want 👍
Thank you for an interesting video. Recently I am looking for understanding deeply the difference between concept artist and illustrator. Now I can classify them. But there is one thing i have been confused about illustration that, is your sharing only apply for game, animation? Cuz when talking about some relevant field like Fine Art, Graphic Novel, Manga, etc, as I saw, the illustrator is the one working on generate idea (beginning) as well as execute it along the way (end). So the actual scope of work is depend on purpose and the specific field, right?
Great video but I’m still not sure where to go. I feel like my art skills has been left aside and I want to use it. I’m good with drawing and copying but not so good with ideas. So would concept art be a problem for me?
CONCEPT ART FOR THE WIN!
It is amazing :D
Hey Lucas! Actually, can we call someone who does both a Visual Development Artist? Illustrator + Concept Artist = Visual Development Artist?
haha I guess 😅 different studios call these different positions
I am working on a script and am looking for someone who would like to work on a long-term project, as a concept artist. This should be on a voluntary basis, but it is also about the experience if you enjoy working on that basis, then I would like to get in touch with people. This project concerns Space war, Fantasy concepts such as Aliens and strange planets and cultures, mythical concepts to the ultimate history of the Earth. This is going to be a video documentary with a story about the history of the earth before our real history has started. And all this wrapped up in a story with beautiful images. Looking for people with talent and who support the idea and want to do this out of passion. I'm talking about 2 hour video of real facts told in fictional form.
That time when warcraft concept came
Yeah 😎
is that Krenz's art?
How i do both? (Yes, I'm mentally ill)
you can do both, it just takes way more practice and skill 🔥
Oh no... They're both hot!
Haha yeah it is hard to choose 😁
I would like to thank both you for making this video and Kevin Villamizar's comment, (th-cam.com/video/3BF0ZpqT0Vk/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugzv0SSMUbrZo7CktJZ4AaABAg), for expanding my mind and helping me out of my internal struggle in finding out which one I should be aiming for! 😁😁😁 I know that I do love the ideas of both, so very much, but I've noticed that in my personal case, the positive feedback I recieve mostly comes from attention to detail and things!
Such a nice comment, thank you very much!
Is Digital Art and Concept Art the same. If so whats the difference ?
nop it is not the same, I mean it can be... art nowadays can be digital or traditional - which in one thing... and the concept art is a filed... just like illustration, animation, 3d...
@@LucasPeinadorThanks and Is there any good online Digital Art certificate course ?
wow im an expert telling the differences!
mom im so talent ;D
Más vídeos así!!!
Can you give us some advise before search for a job ( portfolio, or investigate the company... What else)?
Ps I love you
Hahahah, love you too Sebastian. Absolutely! I'm happy that you like these type of videos :)
You💗
Love you
So, the illustrator does the shields n props and the battle scene is the concept art? Or is it vice versa? 🤔
1:25 that was really considered concept art? Damn I thought concept arts where less finalized this looks like a completed illustration of a concept art
Ikr, it really depends for what industry you are working and what studio. For movies it is considered standard to provide more finished artwork. Also the style of the artist has a hand in it
yea im confused too because the concept art i learned in school were mostly thumbnails and t posed characters where the 3d modelers or whoever can easily create a model out of
Concept
Do you speak spanish?
si 👍
Ambos
Super helpful thank you. I prefer concept - i like to be the almighty God! ; )
Glad you found it helpful Anne 😊
Concept artist = front end
Illustrator = back end
Ok bye
You mixed it up. It's the other way around.
