  • Update on the Hornby Colliery set 4f that was of Airfix heritage, originally it was tender drive. I was told that it would need tender pick up's to be fitted if it was to be converted to loco drive. . . . .Also some scenic additions and idea's on the layout this October.

    That's a really good rebuild of your 4F. It seems to run better than my original loco drive ones. I also have removed the traction tyres on mine and that made the them run much smoother. They can still pull a lot of wagons. Then I used Deluxe Materials' Glue 'n' glaze to add windows. I really recommend that.
    Each time I watch your layout I really admire the realistic track ballasting you've done. And all the other detailing of course :)
    I still run my trains on my living room table.... Hopefully I'll build a real layout before I get too old...
    I'm staying tuned for your next video.
    Cheers, Anders

    Y'know, I'd bought Bachmann's 4F new, thinking it'd be super. It wasn't. It wouldn't run smoothly on my FB controller, so I sent it back, buing Hornby's latest and greatest. It did the same. So strange, back too, it went. I'd bought Hornbys K1 new, and it was and is superb.
    But since I wanted the 4F, I bought an Airfix cheapie. It was thrashy, noisy, and squealed but after taking it apart, cleaning and oiling the motor, It ran well. Since its well worn, its not silent, but it runs beautifully at low speeds and will pull heavy loads.
    So I bought another newer model. Good product. Because the tender drive worked so well, I bought a Compound, R 376 I think. It's not so good but looks so brilliant I'll find a way to improve on its running.
    Must admit to loving the tender drives. Sorry, guys! :)

      @@peterrobin9872 I honestly think it’s pot luck with second hand models because of two factors , one previous wear and condition, secondly age and reliability of the thing . However given some TLC you can achieve some results results !

    “Nuts to Hornby!”- Cracking. Perseverance is everything and a good education doesn’t come cheap.Your research bears all the hallmarks of academic rigour and you won so well done.Excellent. Very instructive.Nice trees on the layout BTW. You can’t have too many and yours are spot on. Invested all of £30 in a Airfix 4F purely for cosmetic effect.Your video explains why perfectly! Well done-Keep it coming.

      ian gregory thank you Ian . Appreciate your comment. It wasn’t an easy job but then nothing is ever straight forward in the hobby , when one achieves something and it works , that’s what I enjoy the most . Subbed you .

    I have two A4's one tender driven and once loco driven, I wondered if it was possible to convert it for added realism, Thanks for showing it may be possible, and as it has mazak rot on the loco chassis it will need replacing anyway!

    An 0-6-0 is just that...add pick-ups to the rear-most tender wheels and you have then extended the contact length.

    I've been wanting to try this conversion for some time after seeing your video; but I'm assuming these chassis are no longer available? I haven't been able to locate them on Peter's Spares site.

    Well done on making this chassis get your 4F going again.
    I would like to comment on a couple of points.
    We do recommend the tender base with pickups as the loco has tyres (incorrect fact in the video as some of you will see there is a shallow grove for the tyre and the wheel isn't the same as the rest. Pickups are on the middles wheel for power to transmit from the wheel flange.)
    The loco will run without tyres but not as well and the grove could snag on paintwork and derail.
    These chassis were taken out of brand new Hornby locos and will not be for sale all the time. (Only while cost effective to break the locos).
    Thanks Peter

      Peters Spares Model Railways Ltd merry Christmas . Thanks for the feedback . I think it’s up to the individual how to navigate such issues particularly when money is tight and I had spent quite a lot on wheel sets and crank pins and what not before I forked our on the motorized complete version from your shop .
      As you and countless views have seen , it works well without any tender pick ups , if I went into the realm of ordering those I may as well bought a new 4f !
      My point was to convert the original as a project which I did .

    Hi, You could have bought a new J15. Think it's the same chassis. You put a lot of energy in this ! Good luck.

    • @Richardsrailway
      @Richardsrailway  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Filip 36 as you see it worked , and yes it did cost a fortune in wheels and spares and eventually a new 4f chassis , but it’s the personal achievement in not quitting and making something work . That’s the true reward .

    • @phil36310
      @phil36310 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you... and I'm likewise too. You've done a fine job and the reward is just fine & smoothly running. I like it ! Success & happy railroading !
