  • This is a video I started in 2019 and never finished, so I have resuscitated it into completion! Here, I reassemble a loco from the parts supplied, including a replacement motor and bearings. I seem to remember that it had been worked on before I got it! Obviously, someone had given up on it! Fortunately, this is the type of restoration I enjoy taking on.
I hope you like the video, I have found about 3 other half completed restorations which I hope to complete throughout the year.
    Take care, keep safe.

Thank you, Jim. Always enjoy your videos :). I have a few N Gauge Locos on my workbench that I endeavour to repair. Very much self-taught and trial and error. Yes, those wheel pickups can take some time to seat properly, and I finally worked out better to replace the brushes whilst you have the loco apart. Question if that’s OK? Never sure how crucial the capacitor is as can often be a bugger to solder back on or like yours not enough room. Is it more for consistent power to motor or something else please? Keep up your great work. Cheers James

Hi James, thanks for looking in and your kind comments. I often I use 'trial and error', but hopefully it comes across as looking as if I've got a clue! The capacitor is an RF suppressor, design to prevent interference on radio equipment. With today's digital equipment, it might not be as obvious and so, in many occasions, the capacitor can be left out. But, if you find crackling on your radio, or 'dot patterns' on your TV, when you run your trains, it might be time to refit! The capacitor, as far as I'm aware, is not related to performance! Hope that helps. Take care, cheers. Jim L

Nice wee loco and it's running well Jim. Is that a green class 40, lurking in the background?

Thanks. Yes, it is a Class 40 'Peak' (I forget its name). But, unfortunately, it has had its motor and pickups removed so it's only a static. Maybe someday I'll try and restore it to working order. It's a lovely looking loco!

Hi Jim, great to see you finished the little 060 I have the OO Grafar version of the same loco in mint condition brought when prices were more realistic from ebay. Regards Wayne.

Thanks Wayne. So we've got a Little and Large pair! I, too, feel some Ebay prices are going through the roof! Trouble is, if you don't go with it you can lose out on important items, for instance, if I need spares, often I need to buy a non runner!
Anyway, take care. Cheers, Jim L
