      Thank you both. I had a few friends willing to store some things so I didn't lose everything. And I had my dog. In my city a lot of people don't use shelters because they don't let you bring dogs. I was the same, I would never, ever abandon him the way I was abandoned. I kept working and eventually crawled out of it. I had to lie about my "current address" of course. People don't realize how hard it is to participate in society when you have no address.

It's just best to take precaution with who you choose on there. I would say background check the person if you can, but it usually cost money to do that. Also if you find out the person is homeless, it's probably best to cut contact. Nothing against homeless people. Treat them with compassion and kindness. But dating one is probably not a good idea.

I like the way you can present cases that are so gruesome, that we really want to know about, but you do it in such a fashion that it brings dignity to these precious victims, without railing on and accentuating the horrible details. Having been married 30+ years and never using these apps my only advice as a grandmother is to check their name online. Are there places on the app where persons can leave their impression of that person after seeing them? I know it hard for anybody to meet someone, so take your time, don’t be alone with them for at least three months or fifteen dates. Don’t ignore little red flags, there are almost alway bigger ones coming. Nana just wants you to stay safe because we can’t live without you. We love to much!

      Yes there is on some apps a feedback section but it’s usually from women that have only chatted to the guy. Not met up or anything. They usually use words like ‘charming’ etc. these guys can take months to reveal their true nature and it’s usually long after you have moved off the app into the real world and have in all probability already let them in your home, they know your schedule etc. they are good at appearing kind gentle normal guys but hide frightening traits. RIP to this lovely lady and mother 😟

    On the note of "dangers when meeting people online", naturally I agree and grasp that there are certain dangers to it, and any actions taken that can reduce the risk should absolutely be encouraged. But I also feel that, placing the focus on "strangers are dangerous when you meet them online" takes away from the dangers that any stranger can realistically pose, no matter where you met them. Whether you meet them at a bar, as a classmate, through mutual friends and so on, that doesn't necessarily mean the person is "safe". One should always be prudent and careful around new people, especially if over-time red flags develop. And even then, you may have known someone for years and they can still turn on you at some point. Meanwhile many people you meet online are just other, innocent, safe people who can genuinely make for good friends or partners, so simply dismissing a friendship/relationship because you "did not meet them in real life" can have its negatives all the same.

      I totally agree with this, the most dangerous man I ever dated was someone who I met through friends and knew for 7 years, trusted from the jump, and he turned out to be a sociopathic rapist. My now partner is someone I met through an app, and he's a wonderful person who I have grown to trust. Like you said, I now know who what signs to look for, how to work out if I can trust someone and use caution, and now I never lower my guard just because I met someone in real life. We should be teaching what to look for and how to build trust, not just 'online is bad'.

    I think it's kind of wild that dating apps *don't* require more verification for their users. It's one thing to go on a regular social media and talk with people on a strictly online basis, but dating sites are there with the specific aim of people establishing relationships that ostensibly will have a real-world element. They need to have better safeguards for their users.

Thank you Adrian for covering this

    It's so upsetting to see women (men too) who allow strangers into their home and lives so quickly. Yes, many people meet and within a month even, they get married. Their marriage turns out "a success" but that's like playing Russian roulette. Especially nowadays. Be careful, even of the charming men because remember, plenty of serial killers were described as "charming".

    This is so sad! It hits home with me bc I fell for a man in 2019 who made up a fictional life on a dating app. Turned out he couch surfed, was a major drug addict and alcoholic, and multiple DUI’s. He broke into my house and made my life miserable for several months. I wish I was smarter about his lies and love bombing at the beginning- it just felt good and I fell for it. I won’t even try a dating app now.

    Poor Ingrid was too naive to see his red flags, but then again, he also had a side piece who was almost as oblivious. Must've been a real charmer

    • @georgiascarlett9679
      @georgiascarlett9679 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Oblivious maybe but I wouldn't say she was naive. She was responsible enough to keep him separate from the children showing she had set boundaries that any person should. She didn't completely trust him and it was a casual relationship. Naturally, you stop thinking that your casual fling might murder you when you've met alone a few times.
      It's a sad case but if you think that everyone you know has the potential to murder you even after you get to know them, you will live a very lonely and reclusive life.

    She never should have dated him to begin with. Her intuition told her his profile was sketchy, but because he was attractive she overlooked that fact. She learns he’s homeless and has nothing going on, and still kept seeing him. She was ashamed of him, and didn’t want her kids or family to meet him. How many alarms need to sound before a woman does the right thing? Not saying she’s responsible for her death, but seriously, she did nothing to prevent it. She shouldn’t have stopped seeing him because he was homeless, she should have stopped seeing him because everything she knew of him was a bunch of lies.

    The judge read 2 dozen impact letters to the guy. Good on her. I bet those hit hard, just a steady couple hrs of being told how great the person he killed was and all the pain he caused them.
    I would imagine that should cause some genuine remorse within anyone who isn't a complete psychopath.
