  • So I thought it was about time I built another ship. Because ships are cool. I got this HMS Ark Royal (with HMS Eskimo) on sale at the local hobby shop.
Sure it's not the best kit... but it does the trick. It looks like Ark Royal and eskimo. Sadly I didn't count on it being so hard to see once I'd primed it...
This model did require quite a bit of filling work in order to look reasonable, so I'd probably avoid it if that's not your thing.

Tamiya supra or revel 1:1200 Gneisenau aren't far from it, anything that takes half A day to complete because it's moulded nicely is something to appreciate with these, especially that Supra, Gneisenau needed some stuff cutting off but other than that the rest went together lovely

Great video of a classic kit! What you got is standard for plastic ship kits from that era. I know cause I was a teenager back then. Actually, this was a highly sought after kit for many years. Being as it was the only kit of a British aircraft carrier and destroyer that were waterline kits. Japanese kits from Tamiya and other manufacturers weren't really available yet. This is the first time I've seen this kit actually. I've always known about it but wasn't ever interested in getting one. Tastes change and now I've got a small collection of 1/350 and 1/144 along with a quartet of 1/72 scale ships and subs.
I'd really like to see you painting this one. You've really done a great job !

I remember building this back in the 1970s. The DD was the Ashanti, though, not Eskimo. Tons of fun for a little kid!

The kit's from 1967, Revell H-483. I built the kit in 1975 when it was Revell H-312-250. Your build is the latest use of the 1967 mould, 2017 Revell 05149. A great kit if you take your time.

50 year old molds, that's crazy. Still pretty interesting, one last effort by the old molds before they're retired and forgotten by time (and then Herbert comes a stabs it...)

the tips for not trying to glue the entire length of the hull are a good idea. I am waiting for this kit to turn up so will probably keep coming back to this vid for ideas. Will try not to create "battle damage" on Eskimo though 😁

@Justin Marion revell has some good kits, but most of them are old moldings with very low quality, especialy the cheaper ones. So far I have made some decent revell modern jet fighters in 1/144... But if you want a good kit, take tamiya

Just bought this for $30 at Hobbyco, the fact that is was only $30 and all the other ship models around this scale were $50 and up, plus this video, gives a very clear indicator of the quality of the model. Still had to buy it as always wanted to do a carrier and $30 for a crap model is good enough for a trial run especially when you get two ships instead of one
5:10 Oh we have *all* been there : )

Revell had a whole series of these back in the 1970's including Prinz Eugen/Blucher, Franklin, Arizona/Pennsylvania and Alabama/Mass. Alabama was probably the best of the lot but still bad compared to the japanese 1/700 kits that came later on.

It's the same old injection molds from 1967, and the model was re-boxed and re-released in 2017. Also, it looks like it's resin, not styrene. Same old Revell 🙄. I've got one coming and will look forward to building it... 😐 Pom-pom was the nickname for the 37mm British QF 1-pounder anti-aircraft gun. It's named that because of the sound when firing: Pom, pom, pom, pom...

Unlike today, the model kits from the mid-twentieth century were produced for different age groups, or modeling experience. Including cheap kits for beginners, early teenagers. Mine you, long before snap together kits existed. Fifty years later these kits don't pass today's detail requirements for adults. They really never have.
