Carter would be a fool to leave. He has every reason to stay: - only 5x champ ever - NIL big $$$ - Low chance of making olympic team anyway behind Dake, JB, etc. - more time to develop and build hype for MMA - more attention from the coaching staff - more time to build up his name in general - still has access to MMA training with Bo Imo he's gonna stay. He is just playing hard to get for that NIL $$$ and for hype. Coaching staff has an incredible track record of keeping guys anyway.
We'll see. Carter says alot of stuff to keep us guessing, though if he really only sees it as another year in school, and he truly tries to win an olympic gold medal- even though I doubt he's even healthy enough to get far at Olympic Trials- that would take him to the last step which would be UFC. We'll see
100% agree with the OP. Aside from him hating school, I just don’t see why you don’t come back. The chance to make history should be enough. As for the OTT, I wonder how much his time scrapping with Dake in the room makes him think he’s got a shot. They surely wrestle a lot, and maybe Carter has kept it tight. 74kg is an absolute gauntlet, but Starocci has proved time and time again that he is that dude.
It sounds really cool for us but to him I doubt being a 5x champ really matters any to him. That is a lot of work and training to just bulldoze the field all season and more than that spending that much time in folk style training and going to class (which he has said he hates) would be taking away from his goals of becoming Olympic and ufc champion since his focus would need to be on folk style. Plus I think most people would have a bit of an asterisk next to it since nobody else would even have the opportunity to achieve 5x not to mention if Keegan was to beat him that would destroy his legacy
SVN will win 149. He looked improved coming off of a really good freshman season. Looked more athletic, stronger, faster. Decisive win over Parco, and he already has a win over Hensen.
If everyone is healthy by march these are my predictions (very similar to yours) 125: Luke Lilledahl 133: Ryan Crookham 141: Andrew Alirez 149: Shane Van Ness 157: Mitchell Messenbrink 165: Levi Haines 174: Keegan O’Toole 184: Parker Keckisen 197: AJ Ferrari (if he gets his shit together) HWT: Feldman if Greg Kerk doesn’t comes back. Finalist: Meyer Shapiro (157) Jesse Mendez (141) Caleb Henson (149) Michael Caliendo (165 if he doesn’t get his spot taken by Angelo Ferrari) Dean Hamiti (174)
Love these picks. I also picked Ferrari to win at 97. Call us crazy, but I think he finds his way on a lineup. I hope it’s Iowa with his brothers (sportsmanship be damned), but even if it isn’t, there’s no one at 97 I’d confidently pick over a healthy and back-to-form AJ.
@@DTS_IThat’s the word on the street. I guess the weight cut for Haines was not fun, and it’s rumored he’s going up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was all the way up at 74. And maybe we see Kasak at 49, SVN at 157, MM at 65, and Haines at 74. Prolly a hot take, but PSU is soooo deep through those weights.
Another note, I think Iowa is crazy to not red shirt Angelo. Calliendo was fantastic this season, and he didn’t transfer to not wrestle. I wonder if he can make 174 and bumps up. But that will be interesting, because apparently Nelson Brands is coming back, and likely slots in at 74, and Gabe Arnold looked small for 184. Between Brands, Kennedy, Calliendo, Arnold, and Ferrari, Iowa has a lot of shit to figure out from 165 - 184, and the only one with a red shirt available, to my knowledge, would be Ferrari.
@@rhebbhulett Yea. Iowa has a problem. I didn’t know Angelo was that big until recently. But they have 3 weight classes. I think Brands fills out 184, Gabe goes 174, and Caliendo is going to be ranked #2 at 165 since he took 4th and besides Messenbrink was the highest returning AA. Since O’Toole is bumping. Angelo redshirting would be good. Cause then Brands uses up his final year of eligibility (I think) and then we can slide him in at 184 or 174 and slide Gabe up if he gets bigger (muscle wise).
I honestly don’t dislike a single one of these picks. The situation with Penn State’s lineup through 149 and 174 is very interesting. We still have a lot to learn about what guys are going to take the mat at which weight. I also love the Luke Lilledahl pick at 125. I’m curious to see where Ben Davino ends up, whether it’s 125 or 133. And Sammy Sasso… How do you not root for that guy next year? It would be such an amazing comeback story! One final thought: as a massive Iowa Hawkeyes fan, I am very concerned about the next year. I don’t think we have any clearcut guy you can pencil in for the finals, but I really want to pick Keuter at HWT. He’s a proven talent, and will likely put on the size he needs. The football situation is going to continue to make things complicated, but I believe he has the skills to win it all, assuming Greg and Wyatt are not back.
Unless Bartlett can really work on his neutral offense, there’s no way he beats Mendez and Alirez. And O’Toole is going to 174 where Starocci most likely won’t be competing
125: Ramos over Volk 133: Crookham over Mcgonagle 141: Mendez over Bartlett 149: Van Ness over Alirez 157: Shapiro over Kasak (Haines RS) 165: Mesenbrink over Caliendo 174: O’Toole over Arnold 184: Keckeisen over Foca 197: Starocci over Cardenas 285: Hendrickson over Bastida
I could see Davis or Lilledahl red shirting. To me it makes sense to red shirt Davis so he can put on the size needed for 133 while Lilledahl slides in and tests the college waters. Nagao was a red shirt SO this season, so he may be the guy for the next 2 years at 133, assuming he continues to make the weight. Man, PSU almost has too many guys to know what to do with.

I’m hoping Nagao transfers….His skill set isn’t what it should be, and he had zero good wins this past year. Nagao got majored by Marlon Yarbrough for Christ Sakes. The scary thing for the rest of the NCAA is if Carter and Kerk return, and Penn State adds 30 points to the team race via 125 and 133. Certainly there will be a drop off at 197 in regard to points, but it won’t be more than 10 IMO. I’m predicting 7 in the finals next year with champs at 125, 141, 149, 157, 165, 184, HWT. I have Carter at 184. If Penn State has 7 champs, and team scores at around 190, how badly will Ryan whine next year.
Starocci won't bump up to 184, especially since he's cutting down to 74 kilos for the Olympic trials and Olympics. He's not gonna be gaining 10-15 pounds before the season starts just wrestle at 184.
